Mosquitoes are significant vectors, responsible for transmitting serious infectious diseases, including the recent epidemics of global significance caused by, for example, Zika, Dengue and Chikungunya viruses. The chemical insecticides in use for mosquito control are toxic and ineffective due to the development of resistance to them. The new approach to reduce mosquito population by releasing genetically modified males to cause female infertility is still under environmental safety evaluation.

J Cell Physiol

October 2018

Endocrinology and Metabolism Laboratory, Department of Zoology (Centre for Advanced Studies), School of Life Sciences, Visva-Bharati (A Central University), Santiniketan, West Bengal, India.

The growing prevalence of male infertility is a matter of serious concern. One of the putative causes being nutritional excess from continuous consumption of high fat diet (HFD) leading to insulin resistance albeit the specific relationship is not fully understood. Besides, there are many contradictions in the available literature on the subject.

Mutations in hepatocyte nuclear factor-1β gene result in a multisystemic syndrome where a monogenic form of diabetes (maturity-onset diabetes of young type 5; MODY 5) and renal anomalies, usually bilateral multiple cysts are the most characteristic findings. Many of them have pancreatic structural abnormalities as well. A plethora of extrapancreatic manifestations like altered liver function tests, hypomagnesaemia, hyperuricaemia with/without gout and urogenital malformations, particularly in females are also components of the syndrome.

Brucellosis is endemic in Bangladesh both in humans and in animals. A number of reasons complicate the diagnosis, as bovine brucellosis can be diagnosed by various serological tests. But the tests have a limitation; when the organism remains intracellular, the disease goes into chronic stage and the antibody titres may decline.

Relationship between morphological abnormalities in commercial bull frozen semen doses and conception rate.

Andrologia

April 2018

Universidad de Buenos Aires, Facultad de Ciencias Veterinarias, Cátedra de Física Biológica, Laboratorio de Calidad Seminal y Criopreservación de Gametas, Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Commercial doses of frozen bull semen for artificial insemination may have a certain percentage of morphological defects, despite being subject to prior selection. The aims of this study were to determine the prevalence of morphological abnormalities in commercial doses (n = 55, r = 2) of dairy and beef bulls, from AI Centers and to determine the possible existence of differences between them, regarding the percentage of abnormal spermatozoa. At least 200 spermatozoa per sample were evaluated using Bengal Rose stain (3% m/v) and light microscopy (×1000 magnification).

Successful implantation is dependent on the appropriate decidualization of endometrial stromal cells for the establishment of pregnancy in women. Mycobacterial heat shock protein 65 (HSP65) is involved in pathogenesis of the genital tuberculosis (GTB), one of the common causes of infertility in emerging countries. Though implantation failure appears to be the major cause, understanding the status of decidualizaiton process in women diagnosed with GTB has not been thoroughly addressed.
