Background: Indigenous Australians experience significant socioeconomic disadvantage and healthcare disparity compared to non-Indigenous Australians. A retrospective cohort study to describe the association between rates of self-discharge in Indigenous orthopaedic patients and the introduction of routine Aboriginal Liaison Officers (ALO) within the Orthopaedic multi-disciplinary team (MDT) was performed.

Methods: ALO were introduced within our routine Orthopaedic MDT on the 22 of February 2021.

Background: Shear wave elastography (SWE) is an emerging ultrasound-based technology that provides a quantitative assessment of musculoskeletal tissue integrity. This systematic review investigates the use of SWE in the evaluation of rotator cuff tears.

Methods: PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, Google Scholar, and the Cochrane Library databases were searched for relevant studies from 1901 up to June 2022.

Background: To investigate the association between keratoconus (KC) and allergic eye diseases, eye rubbing, and atopy.

Methods: PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, and Cochrane databases were searched for studies investigating eye allergy, atopy, and eye rubbing as risk factors for KC up to April 2021. Two authors independently screened all titles and abstracts against the predefined inclusion and exclusion criteria.

Department of Ophthalmology, Royal Victorian Ear and Eye Hospital, Centre for Eye Research Australia, Melbourne, Victoria, Australia.

Introduction: We describe this first case of causing infectious crystalline keratopathy (ICK) following Descemet stripping endothelial keratoplasty (DSAEK), that resolved after 5 weeks of topical antibiotic and corticosteroid treatment.

Case Description: An 80-year-old woman presented with blurred vision, redness, and ocular pain 9 months after successful DSAEK. Slit lamp examination revealed the presence of white, non-suppurative, deep-branching stromal infiltrates, and a clinical diagnosis of ICK was made.

Purpose: High tibial osteotomy (HTO) and unicompartmental knee arthroplasty (UKA) are commonly performed procedures for the treatment of compartmental knee osteoarthritis; however, the optimal procedure remains controversial. We conducted this systematic review and meta-analysis to compare the functional outcomes and assess complications and revision rates between the two techniques.

Methods: We searched electronic databases for relevant studies comparing HTO versus UKA for unicompartmental knee osteoarthritis.

Background: To investigate association between keratoconus and allergic eye diseases, eye rubbing, and atopy.

Methods: PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, and Cochrane were searched for relevant published studies from inception to April 2021 without restrictions or filters. We included case-control, cohort, and cross-sectional studies that investigated eye allergy, atopy, or eye rubbing as possible risk factors for KC.

Complex regional pain syndrome type 1 (CRPS-I) is a complex complication that occurs after limb extremity surgeries. Controversy exists regarding the effectiveness of vitamin C in reducing that condition. Therefore, we conducted this systematic review and meta-analysis to assess the role of vitamin C on CRPS-I and functional outcomes after distal radius, wrist, foot, and ankle surgeries.

Article Synopsis
  • The optimal fixation method for acute Lisfranc injuries is still uncertain, prompting a systematic review of the literature to evaluate how different methods affect postoperative functional outcomes.
  • Seventeen studies involving 462 patients were analyzed, focusing on the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons midfoot score (AOFAS-MF) as a key functional outcome measure.
  • Results showed no significant difference in AOFAS-MF scores between transarticular screws and bridge plates, but bridge plate fixation was associated with better outcomes in comparative studies, highlighting the need for more research to determine the best fixation method.

Background: There has been an anecdotal shift away from screw banks in orthopaedic surgery in preference for individually wrapped screws. Our hypothesis is that opening individually wrapped items introduces a possible source of contamination of the surgical set-up and repeated opening compounds this potential. Theoretically, this could pose a greater infection risk to the patient than the alternative of a screw bank.

The place of indwelling urinary catheterisation following epidural anaesthesia to prevent acute retention of urine after hip and knee arthroplasty is controversial. Even with the use of aseptic techniques and closed sterile drainage, bacteriuria has been reported in 10-27% of catheterised patients. A prospective trial was carried out in 68 consecutive patients undergoing knee or hip joint arthroplasty with epidural anaesthesia to investigate the perioperative complications of short term urinary catheterisation.
