The impact of war on ACS admissions and triage - a single center experience.

Introduction: Contemporary data regarding the impact of war on cardiovascular disease is scarce. The Israel-Gaza war that erupted on October 7th, 2023, provided a tragic opportunity to explore the effect of war on the epidemiology, characteristics, and management of patients with acute coronary syndrome (ACS) living in areas of active armed conflict.

Methods: All patients admitted with ACS to our medical center, between October 7th, 2023, and January 6th, 2024, were retrospectively included.

Incremental benefit of high dose compared to standard dose influenza vaccine in reducing hospitalizations.

Evidence regarding the high-dose (HD) vaccine's relative vaccine effectiveness (rVE) and absolute benefit in reducing influenza-related hospitalizations compared to the standard-dose (SD) vaccine is warranted. We estimated the adjusted rVE and the number needed to vaccinate (NNV) of the HD vaccine compared to the SD vaccine among Clalit Health Services members aged ≥65 years. Among 418,603 and 393,125 members vaccinated in the 2022-2023 and 2023-2024 influenza seasons, the adjusted rVE was 27% (95% CI: -12% to 61%) for 2022-2023 and 7% (95% CI: -36% to 42%) for 2023-2024, with NNV to prevent one hospitalization event being 2262 (95% CI: 1004 to ∞) and 7662 (95% CI: 1293 to ∞), respectively.

Heart transplant survival and the use of donors with intracranial bleeding: United Network for Organ Sharing Registry propensity-score matched analysis.

Objective: The transplantation of hearts from donors who experienced intracranial bleeding (ICB) has been associated with inferior long-term survival in both single-center analyses and, more recently, with the United Network for Ogan Sharing Registry. The purpose of this study was to further explore this relationship through propensity score matching in recipients receiving donor hearts from ICB and non-ICB donors in a large national registry.

Methods: We performed a retrospective cohort analysis of the United Network for Organ Sharing Registry Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network between 2006 and 2018 for adult candidates wait-listed for isolated heart transplantation.

Coping, meaning in life, and quality of life during ongoing conflict: insights from Israeli populations.

Background: Conducted in May 2024, this study examines the well-being of Israeli evacuees and non-evacuees from conflict zones. We assess health-related quality of life (HRQoL), meaning in life (MIL), coping strategies, psychological symptoms, and self-mastery. Aims include exploring effects of trauma and socio-demographics on HRQoL and MIL, analyzing mediating roles of psychological symptoms and coping, and evaluating if evacuation status moderates these relationships during ongoing conflict.

Artificial metalloenzyme assembly in cellular compartments for enhanced catalysis.

Artificial metalloenzymes (ArMs) integrated within whole cells have emerged as promising catalysts; however, their sensitivity to metal centers remains a systematic challenge, resulting in diminished activity and turnover. Here we address this issue by inducing in cellulo liquid-liquid phase separation through a self-labeling fusion protein, HaloTag-SNAPTag. This strategy creates membraneless, isolated liquid condensates within Escherichia coli as protective compartments for the assembly of ArMs using the same fusion protein.

Radiation-induced cardiac disease: Modern techniques to reduce cardiac toxicity.

Purpose: Continuous advancements in cancer management have resulted in increased long-term survival rates amongst cancer survivors and in turn have exposed the full extent of radiotherapy-associated morbidities. Radiation-induced coronary heart disease (RICHD) is one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality in cancer survivors, particularly in those having undergone mediastinal radiation. While mediastinal radiation has been shown to substantially reduce both recurrence and mortality rates in multiple thoracic malignancies, the risk for the development of RICHD is of significant concern.

Persistence of Long COVID Symptoms Two Years After SARS-CoV-2 Infection: A Prospective Longitudinal Cohort Study.

Background/objectives: Millions of individuals worldwide continue to experience symptoms following SARS-CoV-2 infection. This study aimed to assess the prevalence and phenotype of multi-system symptoms attributed to Long COVID-including fatigue, pain, cognitive-emotional disturbances, headache, cardiopulmonary issues, and alterations in taste and smell-that have persisted for at least two years after acute infection, which we define as "persistent Long COVID". Additionally, the study aimed to identify clinical features and blood biomarkers associated with persistent Long COVID symptoms.

Stochastic Filtering of the Attitude Quaternion.

Several stochastic H∞ filters for estimating the attitude of a rigid body from line-of-sight measurements and rate gyro readings are developed. The measurements are corrupted by white noise with unknown variances. Our approach consists of estimating the quaternion while attenuating the transmission gain from the unknown variances and initial errors to the current estimation error.

Gut Microbiome Modulation of Glutamate Dynamics: Implications for Brain Health and Neurotoxicity.

The gut-brain axis plays an integral role in maintaining overall health, with growing evidence suggesting its impact on the development of various neuropsychiatric disorders, including depression. This review explores the complex relationship between gut microbiota and glutamate (Glu) regulation, highlighting its effect on brain health, particularly in the context of depression following certain neurological insults. We discuss how microbial populations can either facilitate or limit Glu uptake, influencing its bioavailability and predisposing to neuroinflammation and neurotoxicity.

Antibiotic Resistance in Vibrio Bacteria Associated with Red Spotting Disease in Sea Urchin (Echinodermata).

The red spotting disease harms sea urchins to the extent of mass mortality in the ocean and echinocultures, accompanied by environmental damage and economic losses. The current study emphasizes the antimicrobial resistance of three isolated bacteria, closely related to , , and , associated with red spotting in the cultured sea urchin . In vitro trials examined the susceptibility of these bacterial isolates to various antibiotics.

Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation Enhances the Therapeutic Effect of IGF-Trap in Intracerebral Glioma Models.

Glioblastoma multiforme is an aggressive malignancy with a dismal 5-year survival rate of 5-10%. Current therapeutic options are limited, due in part to drug exclusion by the blood-brain barrier (BBB). We have previously shown that high-amplitude repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) in rats allowed the delivery across the BBB of an IGF signaling inhibitor-IGF-Trap.

Natural Antimicrobial Compounds as Promising Preservatives: A Look at an Old Problem from New Perspectives.

Antimicrobial compounds of natural origin are of interest because of the large number of reports regarding the harmfulness of food preservatives. These natural products can be derived from plants, animal sources, microorganisms, algae, or mushrooms. The aim of this review is to consider known antimicrobials of natural origin and the mechanisms of their action, antimicrobial photodynamic technology, and ultrasound for disinfection.

The Potential of Polymers and Glass to Enhance Hydrogen Storage Capacity: A Mathematical Approach.

This manuscript contributes to understanding the role of hydrogen in different materials, emphasizing polymers and composite materials, to increase hydrogen storage capacity in those materials. Hydrogen storage is critical in advancing and optimizing sustainable energy solutions that are essential for improving their performance. Capillary arrays, which offer increased surface area and optimized storage geometries, present a promising avenue for enhancing hydrogen uptake.

Polycrystalline Films of Indium-Doped PbTe on Amorphous Substrates: Investigation of the Material Based on Study of Its Structural, Transport, and Optical Properties.

Nowadays, polycrystalline lead telluride is one of the premier substances for thermoelectric devices while remaining a hopeful competitor to current semiconductor materials used in mid-infrared photonic applications. Notwithstanding that, the development of reliable and reproducible routes for the synthesis of PbTe thin films has not yet been accomplished. As an effort toward this aim, the present article reports progress in the growth of polycrystalline indium-doped PbTe films and their study.

Lithium, Inflammation and Neuroinflammation with Emphasis on Bipolar Disorder-A Narrative Review.

This narrative review examines lithium's effects on immune function, inflammation and cell survival, particularly in bipolar disorder (BD) in in vitro studies, animal models and clinical studies. In vitro studies show that high lithium concentrations (5 mM, beyond the therapeutic window) reduce interleukin (IL)-1β production in monocytes and enhance T-lymphocyte resistance, suggesting a protective role against cell death. Lithium modulates oxidative stress in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-activated macrophages by inhibiting nuclear factor (NF)-ƙB activity and reducing nitric oxide production.

Post-translational ubiquitination is an essential mechanism for the regulation of protein stability and function, which contributes to the regulation of the immune system. Cbl, an E3 ubiquitin ligase, is particularly well-characterized in the context of T and NK cell signaling, where it serves as a key regulator of receptor downstream signaling events and as a modulator of cell activation.
