Department of Cell Biology (G.G., N.G., U.P., S.R.C., A.C., S.P.M., D.S., M.H., E.A.N., K.K.H.), School of Medicine, University of Virginia, Charlottesville.

Background: Distinct endothelial cell cycle states (early G1 versus late G1) provide different "windows of opportunity" to enable the differential expression of genes that regulate venous versus arterial specification, respectively. Endothelial cell cycle control and arteriovenous identities are disrupted in vascular malformations including arteriovenous shunts, the hallmark of hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia (HHT). To date, the mechanistic link between endothelial cell cycle regulation and the development of arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) in HHT is not known.

December 2023

Unit of Biomarkers and Susceptibility, Oncology Data Analytics Program (ODAP), Catalan Institute of Oncology (ICO), Oncobell Program, Bellvitge Biomedical Research Institute (IDIBELL) and CIBERESP, Barcelona, Spain.

Article Synopsis
  • Uveal melanoma (UM) is the most common eye cancer in adults, with most patients carrying specific gene mutations (GNAQ/GNA11 Q209L/Q209P).
  • Researchers believe these mutations can be recognized by the immune system, even in the immune-suppressed environment of the eye.
  • Analysis of tumor data shows that Q209L is more likely to trigger an immune response than Q209P, suggesting potential for new treatments, such as vaccines targeting this mutation.

March 2024

Department of Population and Public Health Sciences and USC Norris Comprehensive Cancer Center, Keck School of Medicine, University of Southern California, Los Angeles, California.

Article Synopsis
  • High consumption of red and processed meats is linked to an increased risk of colorectal cancer, with a study analyzing data from over 29,000 cancer cases and 39,000 control subjects confirming this association.
  • The research identified two significant genetic markers (SNPs) that interact with meat consumption levels, suggesting that certain genetic variants can influence individual cancer risk based on dietary habits.
  • These findings highlight the potential for using genetic information to better understand colorectal cancer risks related to diet, which may lead to personalized dietary recommendations for specific population subgroups.

Fibrogenesis is part of a normal protective response to tissue injury that can become irreversible and progressive, leading to fatal diseases. Senescent cells are a main driver of fibrotic diseases through their secretome, known as senescence-associated secretory phenotype (SASP). Here, we report that cellular senescence, and multiple types of fibrotic diseases in mice and humans are characterized by the accumulation of iron.

Introduction: Advancements in and accessibility to effective antiretroviral therapy has improved the life expectancy of people living with HIV, increasing the proportion of people living with HIV reaching older age (≥60 years), making this population's health-related quality of life (HRQoL) more relevant. Our aim was to identify the determinants of poor HRQoL in people living with HIV aged ≥60 years and compare them with those of their younger counterparts.

Methods: We used data from the 'Vive+' study, a cross-sectional survey conducted between October 2019 and March 2020, nested within the PISCIS cohort of people living with HIV in Catalonia and the Balearic Islands, Spain.

Aims: Ovarian Wilms tumour (WT)/nephroblastoma is an extremely rare neoplasm that has been reported to occur in pure form or as a component of a teratomatous neoplasm. We hypothesized that teratoma-associated and pure ovarian WT may represent different tumour types with diverging molecular backgrounds. To test this hypothesis, we comprehensively characterized a series of five tumours originally diagnosed as ovarian WT.
