Background: Deep learning (DL) is a new technology that can assist prenatal ultrasound (US) in the detection of congenital heart disease (CHD) at the prenatal stage. Hence, an economic-epidemiologic evaluation (aka Cost-Utility Analysis) is required to assist policymakers in deciding whether to adopt the new technology.

Methods: The incremental cost-utility ratios (CUR), of adding DL assisted ultrasound (DL-US) to the current provision of US plus pulse oximetry (POX), was calculated by building a spreadsheet model that integrated demographic, economic epidemiological, health service utilization, screening performance, survival and lifetime quality of life data based on the standard formula: US screening data were based on real-world operational routine reports (as opposed to research studies).

Purpose: In a previous study of treatment for advanced colorectal cancer, the LV5FU2 regimen, comprising leucovorin (LV) plus bolus and infusional fluorouracil (5FU) every 2 weeks, was superior to the standard North Central Cancer Treatment Group/Mayo Clinic 5-day bolus 5FU/LV regimen. This phase III study investigated the effect of combining oxaliplatin with LV5FU2, with progression-free survival as the primary end point.

Patients And Methods: Four hundred twenty previously untreated patients with measurable disease were randomized to receive a 2-hour infusion of LV (200 mg/m/d) followed by a 5FU bolus (400 mg/m/d) and 22-hour infusion (600 mg/m/d) for 2 consecutive days every 2 weeks, either alone or together with oxaliplatin 85 mg/m as a 2-hour infusion on day 1.

The absence of spermatogenesis in radical orchiectomy specimen is associated with advanced-stage nonseminomatous testicular cancer.

Urol Oncol

December 2021

Department of Urology, Rabin Medical Center - Beilinson Hospital, Petach Tikva, Israel; Sackler Faculty of Medicine, Tel Aviv University, Tel Aviv, Israel. Electronic address:

Background: To assess if clinical, pathological, and spermatogenesis factors are associated with clinical staging in patients with testicular germ cell tumors.

Patients And Methods: We retrospectively reviewed the pathology reports and slides from 267 men who underwent radical orchiectomy for testicular cancer at our institution during 1998-2019. Histologic slides were reviewed and the presence of mature spermatozoa was documented.

Background: Many Intensive Care Unit (ICU) deaths include patient and family suffering. While there is a need to include palliative care in the ICU, such care is often unavailable.

Objectives: To determine whether a course in ICU Palliative Care was associated with changes in participants' palliative care knowledge, attitudes and practices.

Paraoxonase 1 (PON1) attenuates sperm hyperactivity and spontaneous acrosome reaction.

Andrology

January 2019

Department of Nutrition, Faculty of Health Sciences, Ariel University, Ariel, Israel.

Background: Sperm capacitation is essential for proper fertilization and is associated with increased sperm hyperactivity (HA) and acrosome reaction (AR). For successful fertilization, AR timing is critical; accordingly, early spontaneous AR may not facilitate fertilization. Paraoxonase 1 (PON1) possesses antioxidant properties which affect sperm capacitation.

Devastating recurrent brain ischemic infarctions and retinal disease in pediatric patients with CD59 deficiency.

Eur J Paediatr Neurol

Department of Medicine B Director, Center for Research in Rheumatology, Hadassah Medical Center, Hebrew University, Jerusalem, Israel. Electronic address:

Identification of CD59 p.Cys89Tyr mutation in 5 patients from North-African Jewish origin presenting with chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyradiculoneuropathy like disease and chronic hemolysis, led us to reinvestigate an unsolved disease in 2 siblings from the same origin who died 17 years ago. The two patients carried the same CD59 gene mutation previously described by our group.

The purpose of this study was to examine and compare the cognitive profiles of three groups of Israeli individuals who exhibit cognitive deficits for diverse reasons, using the Neurobehavioural Cognitive Status Examination (Cognistat, former name NCSE). The test is a standardized cognitive screening instrument which includes general areas of alertness, attention, orientation, language (comprehension, repetition, naming), construction, memory, calculations and reasoning (similarities, judgement). Assessment results are provided as a profile of the different domains and graded on four performance levels (average, mild, moderate, severe).

Agenesis of the gallbladder found at laparoscopy for cholecystectomy: an unpleasant surprise.

Am J Gastroenterol

June 1995

Department of Surgery B, Belinson Medical Center, Sackler School of Medicine, Tel Aviv University, Israel.

Gallbladder agenesis is a rare condition that results from the failure of the cystic bud to develop in the 4th wk of intrauterine life. Agenesis is usually discovered at laparotomy for cholecystectomy since ultrasound examination of a patient with suggestive symptoms not visualizing the gallbladder is compatible with chronic cholecystitis (shrunken gallbladder). The surgeon must prove agenesis by thoroughly examining the most common sites for ectopic gallbladders and by performing intraoperative cholangiograms.

The distribution of peptide-containing nerves in the synovia of the cat knee joint.

Histol Histopathol

October 1991

Department of Pathology, Belinson Medical Center, Sackler School of Medicine, Petah Tiqva, Tel-Aviv, Israel.

Synovial capsule in cats is extensively innervated by a network with axonal diameter ranging from 0.6-3 microns according to its position and neuropeptide content. Nerve markers such as Neuron Specific Enolase (NSE) and Neurofilament triplet protein (NF) could be observed only when the axonal fibre attained a critical diameter of over the 3 microns limit.

Previous work has shown that leucocyte adhesiveness/aggregation (LAA), as measured by the leukergy test, correlates well with disease severity in rheumatic patients. As LAA is probably a manifestation of the acute phase reaction various components of the acute phase reaction were measured in order to identify the best marker of disease activity. In addition to LAA, the following variables were measured in 79 patients with various rheumatic diseases and in 10 controls: white blood cell and platelet counts, erythrocyte sedimentation rate, haptoglobin, fibrinogen, C reactive protein, albumin, globulin, caeruloplasmin, alpha 1, alpha 2, beta, and gamma globulin, and haemoglobin concentrations.

Triphasic oral contraceptive (Logynon) induced a significant increase (36%) in the maximal binding capacity of platelet membranes for [3H]imipramine. The increase was achieved in the second Logynon cycle as compared to pretreatment and first Logynon cycle binding values. The pill contains a combination of ethinyl estradiol and levonorgestrel, and it is as yet unclear which of the two hormones is responsible for the up-regulatory effect.
