The wide adoption of occupational shoulder exoskeletons in industrial settings remains limited. Passive exoskeletons were proved effective in a limited amount of application scenarios, such as (quasi-)static overhead handling tasks. Quasi-active devices, albeit representing an improved version of their passive predecessors, do not allow full modulation of the amount of assistance delivered to the user, lacking versatility and adaptability in assisting various dynamic tasks.

Introduction: The General Data Protection Regulation ("GDPR") legal basis for obtaining consent for the processing of personal data for research purposes, where those purposes cannot be fully specified in advance, is provided for in Articles 6, 7 and Recital 33. However, GDPR's requirements for obtaining consent, as to the secondary use and sharing of data in research, have been argued to have generated confusion, whilst the conflicts between the Regulation itself, its practical application and research ethics are well-documented (1). The requirements for "informed consent", as defined within the GDPR, have not been well defined in the context of genome research or clinical trials (2), which has in turn led to the implementation and interpretation of the lawful basis to span into different idiosyncratic models.

Boosting the Pixel Acquisition Rate of Elemental Mapping with Laser Ablation-ICP-Mass Spectrometry to 1000 Hz.

Anal Chem

March 2025

Department of Chemistry, Atomic and Mass Spectrometry - A&MS Research Group, Ghent University, Campus Sterre, Krijgslaan 281-S12, Ghent 9000, Belgium.

Novel low-dispersion ablation cell designs and highly efficient aerosol transport systems have enabled fast elemental mapping using laser ablation-ICP-mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) at high spatial resolution and its application in various research fields. Nowadays, the fastest low-dispersion setups enable narrow single pulse responses (SPR, duration of the transient signal observed upon a single laser shot), which enhance the signal-to-noise ratio and boost the pixel acquisition rate attainable in elemental mapping applications. In this work, the analytical performance of a nanosecond 193 nm ArF* excimer-based kHz laser in combination with a low-dispersion tube-type ablation cell, coupled to an ICP-mass spectrometer equipped with a time-of-flight (ToF) analyzer, was evaluated.

Elective uterine preservation: a novel concept to tackle reproductive ageing. Fertility preservation beyond ovaries.

Reprod Biomed Online

November 2024

IVIRMA Global Research Alliance, IVIRMA Madrid, Spain; Instituto de Investigación Sanitaria La Fe (IIS La Fe), Valencia, Spain, and Rey Juan Carlos University, Madrid, Spain.

With a growing number of women in developed countries having children later in life, it is time to rethink women's reproductive health. This trend of 'delayed parenthood' reflects a complex interplay of labour market rules, personal choices, rarefying social connections and the renowned possibilities of assisted reproductive technology (ART). While ART offers support, its success wanes with age, prompting a rise in additional strategies such as elective ovarian cryopreservation.

Background: Recent studies highlight the critical role of microglia in neurodegenerative disorders, and emphasize the need for humanized models to accurately study microglial responses. Human-mouse microglia xenotransplantation models are a valuable platform for functional studies and for testing therapeutic approaches, yet currently those models are only available for academic research. This hampers their implementation for the development and testing of medication that targets human microglia.

Purpose: Long-axial field-of-view PET scanners capture multi-organ tracer distribution with high sensitivity, enabling lower dose dynamic protocols and dual-tracer imaging for comprehensive disease characterization. However, reducing dose may compromise data quality and time-activity curve (TAC) fitting, leading to higher bias in kinetic parameters. Parametric imaging poses further challenges due to noise amplification in voxel-based modelling.
