The EIVIC project was launched in 2020, and the main goal was the organisation of a European intercomparison of in-vivo monitoring laboratories dealing with direct measurements of gamma-emitting radionuclides incorporated into the body of exposed workers. This project was organised jointly by members of EURADOS Working Group 7 on internal dosimetry (WG7), the Federal Office for Radiation Protection (BfS, Germany) and the Radioprotection and Nuclear Safety Institute (IRSN, France). Optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) film dosimeters, based on BaFBr:Euphosphor material, have major dosimetric advantages such as dose linearity, high spatial resolution, film re-usability, and immediate film readout. However, they exhibit an energy-dependent over-response at low photon energies because they are not made of tissue-equivalent materials. In this work, the OSL energy-dependent response was optimized by lowering the phosphor grain size and seeking an optimal choice of phosphor concentration and film thickness to achieve sufficient signal sensitivity.

Terbium features four clinically interesting radionuclides for application in nuclear medicine: terbium-149, terbium-152, terbium-155, and terbium-161. Their identical chemical properties enable the synthesis of radiopharmaceuticals with the same pharmacokinetic character, while their distinctive decay characteristics make them valuable for both imaging and therapeutic applications. In particular, terbium-152 and terbium-155 are useful candidates for positron emission tomography (PET) and single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) imaging, respectively; whereas terbium-149 and terbium-161 find application in α- and β-/Auger electron therapy, respectively.

We evaluate the impact of the radiological contamination of the Grote Nete catchment in Belgium to people and non-human biota. This region has received effluents from the phosphate and nuclear industries via tributaries of the Grote Nete river in past decades, resulting in the presence of radionuclides such as Am, Co, Cs, K, Pb, Pu, Pu, Ra, Ra, Th, Th, U, U and U. Purpose: Task Group 121 - Effects of ionizing radiation exposure in offspring and next generations - is a task group under the Committee 1 of the International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP), approved by the Main Commission on 18th November 2021. The main goals of Task Group 121 are to (1) review and update the scientific literature of relevance to radiation-related effects in the offspring of parent(s) exposed to ionizing radiation in both human and non-human biota; (2) to assess preconceptional and intrauterine effects of radiation exposure and related morbidity and mortality; and, (3) to provide advice about the level of evidence and how to consider these preconceptional and postconceptional effects in the system of radiological protection for humans and non-human biota.

Methods: The Task Group is reviewing relevant literature since Publication 90 'Biological effects after prenatal irradiation (embryo and fetus)' (2003) and will include radiation-related effects on future generations in humans, animals, and plants.

To achieve optimal operation of the polarimetry-based FOCS, the light polarisation state at the input of the sensing fibre part must be close to a linear one. In the case of a FOCS deployed on a tokamak, the Joint European Torus (JET) in the present work, the long fibre optics link between the laser source and the sensing fibre modifies the polarisation in an unpredictable way, making it unclear which source polarisation state is to be set. A method for performing the necessary polarisation adjustment in a systematic way is proposed based on the FOCS analysis.

Deep Geological Repositories (DGRs) consist of radioactive waste contained in corrosion-resistant canisters, surrounded by compacted bentonite clay, and buried few hundred meters in a stable geological formation. The effects of bentonite microbial communities on the long-term stability of the repository should be assessed. This study explores the impact of harsh conditions (60 °C, highly-compacted bentonite, low water activity), and acetate:lactate:sulfate addition, on the evolution of microbial communities, and their effect on the bentonite mineralogy, and corrosion of copper material under anoxic conditions.

This paper analyzes changes in emergency management in Belgium that have accompanied growing security concerns in Western countries since the 9/11 terrorist attacks in the United States. Using an instrumentation approach, we show how the adoption of a particular regulatory instrument helped put police and judicial actors center stage and gave a more prominent place to the inquiry. We show how the instrument is hampering cooperation, communication, and trust in rescue services and may undermine the collective intelligence at the core of emergency responses.

Impact of medical radionuclide discharges on people and the environment.

We present a novel methodology to dynamically calculate dose rates to people and wildlife from hospital-released radionuclides reaching the environment through water treatment plants (WTPs), using the biokinetic model D-DAT for aquatic wildlife, applied to F, I, I, Sm, Tc and Tl. We have also developed a method to calculate doses to WTP workers and to farmers from agricultural practices. This proof-of-concept study simulates a generic source term of radionuclide levels in the Belgian Molse Nete River during the year 2018, chosen because the river flow was very low during that year, which constitutes a very conservative, bounding case.

To elucidate potential benefits of the Auger-electron-emitting radionuclide Tb, we compared the preclinical performance of the gastrin-releasing peptide receptor antagonists RM2 (DOTA-Pip-d-Phe-Gln-Trp-Ala-Val-Gly-His-Sta-Leu-NH) and AMTG (α-Me-Trp-RM2), each labeled with both Lu and Tb. Tb/Lu labeling (90°C, 5 min) and cell-based experiments (PC-3 cells) were performed. In vivo stability (30 min after injection) and biodistribution studies (1-72 h after injection) were performed on PC-3 tumor-bearing CB17-SCID mice.

A new variant of the AmSel (Americium Selective Separation) system for the separation of Am(iii) from a PUREX raffinate was tested in which the aliphatic diluent was replaced by the ionic liquid Aliquat-336 nitrate. For this ionic liquid variant, the kinetics, and the influence of both the HNO concentration and the ligand concentration on the stripping were evaluated. In addition, both the original AmSel system, and the ionic liquid variant were demonstrated on a simulated highly active raffinate.

A Task Group (TG121) of the International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP) Committee 1 was launched in 2021 to study the effects of ionizing radiation in offspring and next generations. In this report, we summarize the evidence of multi- and trans-generational effects in non-human biota species that was discussed at the ICRP workshop entitled "Effects of Ionizing Radiation Exposure in Offspring and Next Generations" in June 2022. Epigenetic changes, including changes in DNA methylation, have been observed in trans- and multi-generational irradiation studies in both plants and animals.

Purpose: It has been known for many decades that radiation exposure of the developing embryo or fetus may cause two fundamentally different types of severe health effects: on the one hand, radiation may interfere with the normal intrauterine development, on the other hand, radiation may induce leukemia and cancer which become manifest in childhood. A large amount of epidemiological and experimental data has recently been presented which might be used to improve our understanding of underlying mechanisms and setting radiation protection standards. Yet, ecological studies in the populations exposed to increased levels of radiation in regions contaminated by radioactivity released from reactor accidents (Chernobyl, Fukushima) do not provide solid evidence which would contribute to this aim.
