Progressive aggregation of α-synuclein (α-Syn), a small cytosolic protein involved in cell vesicle trafficking, in the midbrain, hypothalamus, and thalamus is linked to Parkinson's disease (PD). Amyloid oligomers and fibrils formed as a result of such aggregation are highly toxic to neurons. However, it remains unclear whether amyloid-induced toxicity of neurons is the primary mechanism of the progressive neurodegeneration observed upon PD.

Human Wharton's jelly mesenchymal stem cells (hWJ-MSCs) are of great interest in tissue engineering. We obtained hWJ-MSCs from four patients, and then we stimulated their chondrogenic phenotype formation in vitro by adding resveratrol (during cell expansion) and a canonical Wnt pathway activator, LiCl, as well as a Rho-associated protein kinase inhibitor, Y27632 (during differentiation). The effects of the added reagents on the formation of hWJ-MSC sheets destined to repair osteochondral injuries were investigated.

A concept of piezo-responsive hydrogen-bonded π-π-stacked organic frameworks made from Knoevenagel-condensed vanillin-barbiturate conjugates was proposed. Replacement of the substituent at the ether oxygen atom of the vanillin moiety from methyl (compound ) to ethyl (compound ) changed the appearance of the products from rigid rods to porous structures according to optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and led to a decrease in the degree of crystallinity of corresponding powders according to X-ray diffractometry (XRD). Quantum chemical calculations of possible dimer models of vanillin-barbiturate conjugates using density functional theory (DFT) revealed that π-π stacking between aryl rings of the vanillin moiety stabilized the dimer to a greater extent than hydrogen bonding between carbonyl oxygen atoms and amide hydrogen atoms.

Objective: In the present study, the interaction between drug Tyrphostin AG528 and CNT(6,6-6) nanotube by Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations in solvent water has been investigated for the first time.

Methods And Results: According to the calculations, intermolecular hydrogen bonds take place between an active position of the molecule Tyrphostin AG528 and hydrogen atoms of the nanotube which play an important role in the stability of complex CNT(6,6- 6)/Tyrphostin AG528. The non-bonded interaction effects of the molecule Tyrphostin AG528 with CNT(6,6-6) nanotube on the electronic properties, chemical shift tensors and natural charge have also been detected.

Aquatic organisms at Chernobyl have now been chronically exposed to environmental radiation for three decades. The biological effects of acute exposure to radiation are relatively well documented, but much less is known about the long-term effects of chronic exposure of organisms in their natural environment. Highly exposed fish in freshwater systems at Chernobyl showed morphological changes in their reproductive system in the years after the accident.

Thrombin is an essential part of the blood coagulation system; it is a serine protease that converts soluble fibrinogen into insoluble strands of fibrin, and catalyzes many other coagulation-related reactions. Absorption at its surface of small nanoparticles can completely change the biological properties of thrombin. We have analyzed the influence on thrombin of 3 different kinds of small nanoparticles: dendrimers (phosphorus-based, carbosilane based and polyamidoamine) and 2 hybrid systems containing carbosilane, viologen and phosphorus dendritic scaffolds in one single molecule, bearing different flexibility, size and surface charge.

We investigate the temperature-dependent decay kinetics of type II CdSe-CdTe and CdTe-CdSe core-lateral shell nanoplatelets. From a kinetic analysis of the photoluminescence (PL) decay and a measurement of the temperature dependent quantum yield we deduce the temperature dependence of the non-radiative and radiative lifetimes of hetero nanoplates. In line with the predictions of the giant oscillator strength effect in 2D we observe a strong increase of the radiative lifetime with temperature.

The photoexcitation energy transfer is found and investigated in complexes of CdSe/ZnS cationic quantum dots and chlorin e6 molecules formed by covalent bonding and electrostatic interaction in aqueous solution and in porous track membranes. The quantum dots and chlorin e6 molecules form stable complexes that exhibit Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET) from quantum dots to chlorin e6 regardless of complex formation conditions. Competitive channels of photoexcitation energy dissipation in the complexes, which hamper the FRET process, were found and discussed.

Effects of curcumin and related compounds on product formation in radiolysis of aerated and deaerated ethanol were studied. Ab initio calculations of enthalpy values relating to O-H bond dissociation and H-atom addition to > C = O bonds of the compounds under study have been performed. The obtained data allowed the conclusion that the presence of a 7-carbon chain containing conjugated > C = C < and > C = O bonds in the structures of curcumin and its analogues makes these compounds capable of inhibiting the reactions involving α-hydroxyl-containing carbon-centered radicals.

Fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) in conjugates of CdSe-ZnS semiconductor nanocrystals of different shapes (FRET donors) and an Alexa Fluor organic dye (FRET acceptors) is examined. The dye molecules are chemically conjugated with quantum dots (QDs) or nanorods (NRs) in dimethyl sulfoxide colloidal solutions, and FRET efficiency in the purified conjugates is measured. The FRET from NR to a single dye molecule is less efficient than that of the QD-dye conjugates and this effect is explained in terms of distance-limited energy-transfer rate in the case of a point-like acceptor and extended donor dipoles.

The ability of natural prostaglandins (PGs) and synthetic prostanoids of B, H and E(1)-types to prevent CCl(4)-induced liver injury in vitro was examined. Seven analogs of PGB, 3 derivatives of PGH and two 11-deoxy-analogs of PGE(1) decreased cytotoxic index of CCl(4) by 2-fold and were more effective then such well-known hepatoprotectors as silymarin, curcumin and PGI(2). These prostanoids reduced trien conjugates formation by 25-95% and strongly prevented LDH leakage through plasma membrane.

We report on comparative experimental study of FRET efficiency in two different systems: organic dye molecules (donors) and CdSe-ZnS core-shell nanodots or nanorods (acceptors). Fluorescein isothiocyanate was bound chemically to the surface of nanocrystals using cysteine as a linker and the conjugates were embedded into the polymeric films. Contrary to intuitive presumptions based on the order of magnitude larger molar absorption coefficient for nanorods, the experiment demonstrated almost equal efficiency in the energy transfer from FITC to nanorods and nanodots.
