Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is accompanied by halogenative stress resulting from the excessive activation of neutrophils and neutrophilic myeloperoxidase (MPO) generating highly reactive hypochlorous acid (HOCl). HOCl in blood plasma modifies serum albumin (Cl-HSA). We studied the formation of neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs) in the whole blood and by isolated neutrophils under the action of Cl-HSA.

Importance: Millions of people take vitamin K antagonists (VKAs). Some people who need urgent surgical procedures require rapid VKA reversal to prevent excessive intraoperative bleeding.
Objective: To evaluate the hemostatic noninferiority of an investigational 4-factor prothrombin complex concentrate (4F-PCC) to a control 4F-PCC for rapid VKA reversal before urgent surgery.

We report a case of a man in his 70s who developed haemoptysis 3 days after commencing sildenafil. Before postulating a potential connection between sildenafil use and haemoptysis, it is important to rule out potential other causative factors and comorbidities. The patient suffers from multiple medical conditions and takes various medications.

Animal models mimicking human transient ischemic attack (TIA) and cerebral microinfarcts are essential tools for studying their pathogenetic mechanisms and finding methods of their treatment. Despite its advantages, the model of single arteriole photothrombosis requires complex experimental equipment and highly invasive surgery, which may affect the results of further studies. Hence, to achieve high translational potential, we focused on developing a TIA model based on photothrombosis of arterioles to combine good reproducibility and low invasiveness.

Nitrogen-containing steroids are known as prostate cancer therapeutics. In this work, a series of pregnane derivatives bearing an imidazolium moiety were synthesized using Δ-20-ketones as starting material. An improved approach for the construction of the 20-keto-21-heterocycle-substituted fragment involved the rearrangement of 16,17-epoxides with HCl, followed by reaction of the formed α-chloroketone with 1-substituted imidazoles.

Alkaloid-based urea derivatives were produced with high yield through the reaction of anabasine and cytisine with isoxazolylphenylcarbamates in boiling benzene. Their antitumor activity, in combination with the commonly used five anticancer drugs, namely cyclophosphane, fluorouracil, etoposide, cisplatin, ribomustine with different mechanisms of action, was investigated. Based on the quantum chemical calculations data and molecular docking, hypotheses have been put forward to explain their mutual influence when affecting C6 rat glioma model cells.

Monitoring the processes inside crystalline materials under their operating conditions is of great interest in optoelectronics and scientific instrumentation. Early defect detection ensures the proper functioning of multiple crystal-based devices. In this study, a combination of acoustic emission (AE) sensing and cross-polarization imaging is proposed for the fast characterization of the crystal's structure.

With increasingly stringent emission limits on sulfur and sulfur-containing substances, the reduction and removal of sulfur compounds from fuels has become an urgent task. Emissions of sulfur-containing compounds pose a significant threat to the environment and human health. Ionic liquids (ILs) have attracted much attention in recent years as green solvents and functional materials, and their unique properties make them useful alternatives to conventional desulfurization organic solvents.

Background: The COVID-19 pandemic has necessitated changes in European healthcare systems, with a significant proportion of COVID-19 cases being managed on an outpatient basis in primary healthcare (PHC). To alleviate the burden on healthcare facilities, many European countries developed contact-tracing apps and symptom checkers to identify potential cases. As the pandemic evolved, the European Union introduced the Digital COVID-19 Certificate for travel, which relies on vaccination, recent recovery, or negative test results.

As engineering demands for structural energy absorption intensify, triply periodic minimal surface (TPMS) structures, known for their light weight and exceptional energy absorption, are increasingly valued in aerospace, automotive, and shipping engineering. In this study, the energy absorption performance of three typical TPMS structures was evaluated (i.e.

Background: Resistance to anti-tumor agents targeting the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) reduces treatment response and requires the development of novel EGFR antagonists. Mutant epidermal growth factor (EGF) forms with reduced agonistic activity could be promising agents in cancer treatment.
Methods: EGF D46G affinity to EGFR domain III was assessed with affinity chromatography.

Agricultural drought (AD) is the main environmental factor affecting vegetation productivity (VP) in the Yellow River Basin (YRB). In recent years, the nonlinear effects of AD on VP in the YRB have attracted much attention. However, it is still unclear whether fluctuating AD will have complex nonlinear effects on VP in the YRB, and there are scant previous studies at large scale on whether there is a threshold for nonlinear effects of AD on VP in the YRB.

Uncontrollable dendrite growth and corrosion induced by reactive water molecules and sulfate ions (SO) seriously hindered the practical application of aqueous zinc ion batteries (AZIBs). Here we construct artificial solid electrolyte interfaces (SEIs) realized by sodium and calcium bentonite with a layered structure anchored to anodes (NB@Zn and CB@Zn). This artificial SEI layer functioning as a protective coating to isolate activated water molecules, provides high-speed transport channels for Zn, and serves as an ionic sieve to repel negatively charged anions while attracting positively charged cations.

Exposure to ionizing radiation, especially during childhood, is a well-established risk factor for thyroid cancer. Following the 1986 Chernobyl nuclear power plant accident the total number of cases of thyroid cancer registered between 1991 and 2015 in males and females who were less than 18 years old exceeded 19,000 (in Belarus and Ukraine, and in the most contaminated oblasts of the Russian Federation). However, as indicated by the United Nations Scientific Committee on the Effects of Atomic Radiation the fraction of the incidence of thyroid cancer attributable to radiation exposure among the non-evacuated residents of the contaminated regions of Belarus, Ukraine and Russia is of the order of 0.

Co-precipitation of biopolymers into calcium carbonate crystals changes their physicochemical and biological properties. This work studies hybrid microcrystals of vaterite obtained in the presence of natural polysaccharides, as carriers for the delivery of proteins and enzymes. Hybrid microcrystals with dextran sulfate, chondroitin sulfate, heparin, fucoidan, and pectin were obtained and compared.

Background And Aims: There is an increased risk of lymphomas in inborn errors of immunity (IEI); however, germline genetic testing is rarely used in oncological patients, even in those with early onset of cancer. Our study focuses on a child with a recombination-activating gene 1 () deficiency who was identified through a screening program for Slavic founder genetic variants among patients who died with malignancy at an early age in Belarus.
Results: We identified one homozygous founder variant out of 24 available DNA samples from 71 patients who developed lymphoma aged <3 years from the Belarusian cancer registry between 1986 and 2023.
