Heavy metals are common environmental industrial pollutants. Due to anthropogenic activity, chromium, especially its hexavalent form [Cr(VI)], is a widespread environmental contaminant that poses a threat to human health. In this review paper, we summarize the currently reported molecular mechanisms involved in chromium toxicity with a focus on the induction of pro-inflammatory non-apoptotic cell death pathways such as necroptosis, pyroptosis, and ferroptosis.

Earthworms are known for their intricate systematics and a diverse range of reproduction modes, including outcrossing, self-fertilization, parthenogenesis, and some other modes, which can occasionally coexist in a single species. Moreover, they exhibit considerable intraspecific karyotype diversity, with ploidy levels varying from di- to decaploid, as well as high genetic variation. In some cases, a single species may exhibit significant morphological variation, contain several races of different ploidy, and harbor multiple genetic lineages that display significant divergence in both nuclear and mitochondrial DNA.

Classic and non-classic cardiovascular (CV) risk factors accumulate in chronic kidney disease (CKD), contributing to vascular remodeling and hemodynamic abnormalities. This study aimed to determine hemodynamic phenotypes based on linear regression of blood pressure (BP) parameters in stage G3-G4 CKD patients at very high CV risk. 24-h ambulatory BP monitoring (ABPM), carotid-femoral pulse wave velocity (PWV) and central BP were obtained from 52 patients (aged 60 ± 11 years, BMI 30 ± 6 kg/m) with stage G3-G4 CKD (eGFR 44 ± 12 mL/min.

Activation of the Hedgehog (Hh) signaling pathway is often associated with the progression of various types of cancer. The purpose of study was to search for inhibitors of the Hh signaling pathway among eight compounds belonging to the group of isoxazolyl steroids. The evaluation of the effectiveness of the compounds was based on the analysis of their cytotoxicity, effect on the cell cycle, on the expression of key Hh-signaling-pathway genes (Ptch1, Smo, and Gli1) and putative target genes MMP-2 and MMP-9.

This work focuses on the first use of ultrasonic phenol-ene coupling as a polymer analogous transformation. The ultrasonic reaction was introduced into chitin chemistry, resulting in the fast and convenient preparation of new water-soluble cationic chitin derivatives. Since water-soluble derivatives of fully deacetylated chitin are poorly described in the literature, the synthesis of each new type of these derivatives is a significant event in polysaccharide chemistry.

Elastic yarns are the key component of high-performance compression garments. However, it remains a challenge to fabricate anti-fatigue yarns with high mechanical force and long elongation for generating compression garments with prolonged wear. In this paper, we report the development of anti-fatigue double-wrapped yarns with excellent mechanical properties by wrapping high-denier Spandex with nylon filaments in opposite twists.

Chronic kidney disease is detected in 8-15% of the world's population. Along with fibrotic changes, it can lead to a complete loss of organ function. Therefore, a better understanding of the onset of the pathological process is required.

Tunneling nanotubes (TNTs) that connect cells have been recognized as a pathway for long-range intercellular transport of diverse cargoes, including viruses, lysosomes or other organelles, Ca and electrical signals. TNTs can initially be formed from thin finger-like actin assembly-driven protrusions or cell contacts and dislodgment. However, it remains unclear whether the mechanical properties of TNTs formed by these two mechanisms are the same.

Asymmetric optical transmission (AOT) has been an enduring hot topic of interest in various fields, including optical communication, information processing, and so on. Particularly, the development of reciprocal micro-nanostructures achieving AOT further facilitates and accelerates the miniaturization and integration of traditional optical components. However, most of these optical components merely consider a single AOT band and transmission in a specified direction, limiting the development of their versatile functions.

Background: The eastern European and central Asian (EECA) region has the fastest growing HIV epidemic globally. We aimed to identify how HIV resources could be allocated for maximum health impact.
Methods: Between Aug 1 and Dec 23, 2022, allocative efficiency analyses were undertaken for 12 countries in the EECA region (Albania, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kosovo, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, Serbia, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan) using HIV epidemic models developed with Optima HIV.

Objectives: To assess changes in the results of septal myectomy (SM) following introduction of three-dimensional (3D) imaging and 3D printing in surgical interventions planning and performing in the single-centre settings.
Methods: Between January 2007 and March 2022, 268 consecutive symptomatic patients with hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy and peak pressure gradient at obstruction area ≥50 mmHg underwent conventional SM (n = 112) or SM with heart 3D modelling (n = 156).
Results: For comparative analysis, we used propensity score matching (PSM) by 14 variables and there were formed group 1PSM (conventional SM, n = 77) and group 2PSM (3D-modelled SM, n = 77).

Background: A fine-needle aspiration (FNA) biopsy is a basic procedure to verify the morphology of thyroid nodules. However, significant variations in the diagnostic performance of FNA, as well as fluctuations in the rate of malignancy (ROM) in different categories of the Bethesda System for Reporting Thyroid Cytopathology, have been discovered in many studies. The development and employment of additional molecular tests in daily clinical practice require an understanding of the prevalence and structure of thyroid malignancy in each category of the Bethesda system.

A new asymmetric synthetic route to (+)- and (-)-limaspermidine was devised, starting with chirally resolved enantiomerically pure 2-pyrone Diels-Alder cycloadducts. This route utilizes intramolecular Pd-catalyzed aromatic C-H amidation and imino-Diels-Alder reactions to construct the key indoline and indolizidine subunits onto the central cyclohexane core, allowing the straightforward formal total syntheses of both (+)- and (-)-limaspermidine.

Background: Osteoporosis, a systemic skeletal disease, seriously affects the quality of life in postmenopausal women. As one type of cathepsin K (CatK) inhibitor, odanacatib (ODN) is a fresh medication for osteoporosis. Considering the potential of ODN, we further examined the effect and safety of ODN for postmenopausal osteoporosis (PMOP) with a meta-analysis.

Viral diseases of potatoes are among the main problems causing deterioration in the quality of tubers and loss of yield. The growth and development of potato plants largely depend on soil moisture. Prevention strategies require comprehensive protection against pathogens and abiotic stresses, including modeling the beneficial microbiome of agroecosystems combining microorganisms and immunostimulants.

This paper introduces a novel plasmon refractive index nanosensor structure based on Fano resonance. The structure comprises a metal-insulator-metal (MIM) waveguide with an inverted rectangular cavity and a circle minus a small internal circle plus a rectangular cavity (CMSICPRC). This study employs the finite element method (FEM) to analyze the sensing characteristics of the structure.

We report the results of synthesis of zinc selenide (ZnSe) nanocrystals into SiO/Si track templates formed by irradiation with 200 MeV Xe ions up to a fluence of 10 ions/cm. Zinc selenide nanocrystals were obtained by chemical deposition from the alkaline aqueous solution. Scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffractometry, Raman and photoluminescence spectroscopy, and electrical measurements were used for characterization of synthesized ZnSe/SiO/Si nanocomposites.
