Background: Metabolic risk factors in primary biliary cholangitis (PBC) have not been well described in China. Additionally, it is unclear whether these factors have an impact on the prognosis of PBC patients. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the prevalence of main metabolic risk factors in PBC, and to evaluate their prognostic values for liver-related outcomes.

Background: Low-density lipoprotein (LDL) and globulin (GLOB) have been found to be predictors for some malignant tumors, but their predictive value in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) has hardly been elucidated. This study assessed the prognostic significance of GLOB to LDL ratio (GLR) in HCC patients before ablation.

Methods: This study analyzed 312 early-stage HCC patients who were hospitalized and underwent ablative treatment in Beijing You'an Hospital, Capital Medical University, from 1 January 2014 to 1 January 2019.

Department of Gynecologic Oncology, Beijing Obstetrics and Gynecology Hospital, Capital Medical University, Beijing Maternal and Child Health Care Hospital, Beijing, China.

Endometrial cancer (EC) is one of the three most prevalent gynecological tumors affecting women and is the most prevalent gynecological malignancy in the developed world. Its incidence is rapidly increasing worldwide, mostly affecting postmenopausal women, whereas recently its prevalence has increased in younger people. EC is an immune gene disease and many studies have shown that the tumor-immunosuppressive microenvironment plays an important role in cancer progression.

Hydrogen sulfide (HS) is a multifunctional gaseous signaling molecule that plays a vital role in several biological processes. In the present study, a BODIPY-based fluorescent probe called 8-[4-((1,4,7,10-tetraazacyclododecane)methyl)phenyl]-4,4-difluoro-1,3,5,7-tetramethyl-4-bora-3a, 4a-diaza-s-indacene (BA-Cyclen)-Cu was designed and synthesized; this probe is a Cu(Ⅱ) complex that uses Cu(Ⅱ) decomplexation to achieve the sensitive and rapid detection of aqueous HS via the "turn-on" mode. We observed that BA-Cyclen-Cu exhibited good membrane permeability, low toxicity, and lysosome-targeting ability, facilitating HS detection in living cells.

For patients with early multiple pulmonary nodules, it is essential, from a diagnostic perspective, to determine the spatial distribution, size, location, and relationship with surrounding lung tissue of these nodules throughout the entire lung. This is crucial for identifying the primary lesion and developing more scientifically grounded treatment plans for doctors. However, pattern recognition methods based on machine vision are susceptible to false positives and false negatives and, therefore, cannot fully meet clinical demands in this regard.

Department of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine, Beijing You An Hospital, Capital Medical University, Beijing, 100069, China.

Although the widespread use of antiretroviral therapy (ART) has prolonged the life span of people living with HIV (PLWH), the incidence of HIV-associated neurocognitive disorders (HAND) in PLWH is also gradually increasing, seriously affecting the quality of life for PLWH. However, the pathogenesis of HAND has not been elucidated, which leaves HAND without effective treatment. HIV protein transactivator of transcription (Tat), as an important regulatory protein, is crucial in the pathogenesis of HAND, and its mechanism of HAND has received widespread attention.

Interventional Therapy Center of Liver Disease, Beijing You'An Hospital, Capital Medical University, Beijing 100069, China.

Viral hepatitis is a global health concern mostly caused by hepatitis B virus (HBV) and hepatitis C virus (HCV). The late diagnosis and delayed treatment of HBV and HCV infections can cause irreversible liver damage and the occurrence of cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma. Detecting the presence and activity of HBV and HCV is the cornerstone of the diagnosis and management of related diseases.

Zinc finger protein 281 (ZNF281) has been shown to promote tumor progression. However, the underlying mechanism remains to be further elucidated. In this study, ZNF281 knockdown increased the expression of mitochondrial transcription factor A (TFAM) in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) cells, accompanied with increment of mitochondrial content, oxygen consumption rate (OCR) and levels of TCA cycle intermetabolites.

Constipation may accelerate the progression of Parkinson's disease (PD). The quality of life in PD patients can be significantly improved when constipation is treated, hence the disease progression may be delayed. At present, the mechanism research is still at the initial stage for acupuncture in treatment of PD, focusing on neurohumoral factors, intestinal flora, bacterial fermentation products and intestinal inflammation; and there are the problems such as single intervention, thinking limitation and insufficient cooperation among disciplines.

Persistent steatosis correlates with decreased fibrosis regression during anti-HBV treatment in patients with chronic HBV infection.

J Med Virol

October 2023

Liver Research Center, Beijing Friendship Hospital, Capital Medical University, Beijing Key Laboratory of Translational Medicine on Liver Cirrhosis, National Clinical Research Center of Digestive Diseases, Beijing, China.

Despite the increasing prevalence of steatosis in patients with chronic hepatitis B (CHB), whether the changes in steatosis impact fibrosis regression during antiviral therapy remain unclear. We aimed to identify the association between histological changes of steatosis and fibrosis in patients undergone antiviral treatment. Patients with paired liver biopsies before and after 78 weeks of antiviral therapy were enrolled in this study.

Insulin Determines Transforming Growth Factor β Effects on Hepatocyte Nuclear Factor 4α Transcription in Hepatocytes.

Am J Pathol

January 2024

Section Molecular Hepatology, Department of Medicine II, University Medical Center Mannheim, Medical Faculty Mannheim, Heidelberg University, Mannheim, Germany. Electronic address:

Loss of hepatocyte nuclear factor 4α (HNF4α) expression is frequently observed in end-stage liver disease and associated with loss of vital liver functions, thus increasing mortality. Loss of HNF4α expression is mediated by inflammatory cytokines, such as transforming growth factor (TGF)-β. However, details of how HNF4α is suppressed are largely unknown to date.

Background: Serum alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) is an important clinical indicator for screening, diagnosis, and prognosis of primary hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Our team's previous study showed that patients with negative AFP at baseline and positive AFP at relapse had a worse prognosis (N-P). Therefore, the aim of our study was to develop and validate a nomogram for this group of patients.

Article Synopsis
  • Hepatic fibrosis is an early stage of liver cirrhosis that currently lacks effective non-invasive detection methods, despite advancements like liver stiffness mapping (LSM) using magnetic resonance elastography (MRE).
  • The study introduces a novel 3D digital model for diagnosing hepatic fibrosis, addressing limitations of the traditional LSM, such as manual analysis and lack of comprehensive structural details.
  • The new concept of Liver Stiffness Distribution (LSD) offers a more precise quantification of liver stiffness in three dimensions, enhancing the clinical evaluation and treatment of hepatic fibrosis.
