Aim: Both clonal hematopoiesis of indeterminate potential (CHIP) and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) are conditions closely associated with advancing age. This study delves into the possible implications and prognostic significance of CHIP and T2DM in patients diagnosed with ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI).
Methods: Deep-targeted sequencing employing a unique molecular identifier (UMI) for the analysis of 42 CHIP mutations-achieving an impressive mean depth of coverage at 1000 × -was conducted on a cohort of 1430 patients diagnosed with acute myocardial infarction (473 patients with T2DM and 930 non-DM subjects).

Background: The clinical outcomes and microbiological features of lower respiratory tract infections (LRTIs) caused by hypervirulent Klebsiella pneumoniae (hvKp) and classical Klebsiella pneumoniae (cKp) have not been well understood.
Methods: This study collected 287 non-repetitive Klebsiella pneumoniae isolates from 287 LRTI patients. All these strains underwent annotation for resistance and virulence factors, with 141 strains undergoing mouse infection experiments to assess their virulence.

Background: The use of potentially inappropriate medications (PIMs) is a major concern for medication safety as it may entail more harm than potential benefits for older adults. This study aimed to explore the prescribing rate, healthcare utilization, and expenditure of older adults using PIMs in China.
Methods: A cross-sectional analysis was conducted using a national representative database of all medical insurance beneficiaries across China, extracting ambulatory visit records of adults aged 65 years and above between 2015 and 2017.

Programmed cell death protein-1 (PD-1) inhibitors plus chemotherapy have been the standard of care in the first-line treatment of advanced gastric or gastroesophageal junction (G/GEJ) adenocarcinoma; however, the survival benefits are modest in patients with low programmed death ligand 1 (PD-L1) expression. Here we investigated the efficacy and safety of cadonilimab (PD-1/cytotoxic T lymphocyte antigen-4 (CTLA-4) bispecific antibody) plus chemotherapy as first-line treatment in G/GEJ adenocarcinoma. The prespecified interim analysis is reported here.

Malnutrition substantially contributes to adverse clinical outcomes. However, no national survey has been conducted to characterize its epidemiology in hospital settings in China. We conducted the China Nutrition Fundamental Data 2020 project among a multistage stratified cluster sample of adult inpatients from 291 study sites across 30 provinces, autonomous regions and municipalities (except for Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan Province, and the Xizang Autonomous Region, please see MATERIALS AND METHODS for details of the causes) of China to generate reliable data on the prevalence of malnutrition and explore the associated risk factors.

Psychological states influence our happiness and productivity; however, estimates of their impact have historically been assumed to be limited by the accuracy with which introspection can quantify them. Over the last two decades, studies have shown that introspective descriptions of psychological states correlate with objective indicators of cognition, including task performance and metrics of brain function, using techniques like functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). Such evidence suggests it may be possible to quantify the mapping between self-reports of experience and objective representations of those states (e.

The tetraploid genome and clonal propagation of the cultivated potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) dictate a slow, non-accumulative breeding mode of the most important tuber crop. Transitioning potato breeding to a seed-propagated hybrid system based on diploid inbred lines has the potential to greatly accelerate its improvement.

Triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) is characterized by the absence of estrogen and progesterone receptors, and lack of human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2) expression. Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) has demonstrated promising efficacy in treating TNBC. This study explored the mechanisms of pachymic acid (PA) on TNBC by merging network pharmacology with experimental validation.

A human hand has 23-degree-of-freedom (DOF) dexterity for managing activities of daily living (ADLs). Current prosthetic hands, primarily driven by motors or pneumatic actuators, fall short in replicating human-level functions, primarily due to limited DOF. Here, we develop a lightweight prosthetic hand that possesses biomimetic 19-DOF dexterity by integrating 38 shape-memory alloy (SMA) actuators to precisely control five fingers and the wrist.

Accurate and efficient sorting of single target cells is crucial for downstream single-cell analysis, such as RNA sequencing, to uncover cellular heterogeneity and functional characteristics. However, conventional single-cell sorting techniques, such as manual micromanipulation or fluorescence-activated cell sorting, do not match current demands and are limited by low throughput, low sorting efficiency and precision, or limited cell viability. Here, we report an automated, highly efficient single-cell sorter, integrating laser-induced forward transfer (LIFT) with a high-throughput picoliter micropore array.

Extracellular vesicles (EVs) are promising therapeutic carriers for their ideal nano-size and intrinsic biocompatibility, while rapid clearance and limited targeting ability are the major setbacks of EVs. With minimal absorption into the systemic circulation, inhalation for pulmonary disease therapy minimizes off-target toxicity to other organs and offers a safe and effective treatment for respiratory disorders. Herein, a nano-grid carrier made of boronated cyclodextrin framework (BCF) was prepared for pH/HO responsive release of EVs.

Nanomedicine-driven ferroptosis has emerged as a promising tumor treatment strategy through delivering exogenous iron and aggravating the lethal accumulation of lipid peroxides (LPO). However, the compensatory mechanisms of ferroptosis defense systems in cancer cells compromise the therapeutic efficacy and lead to potential side effects. Herein, a highly effective ferroptotic nano-amplifier is designed to synergistically promote ferroptosis via increasing intracellular labile iron, exacerbating lipid peroxidation and overcoming the defense system.

Patients with benzene-induced leukemia undergo a continuous transformation from myelosuppression to malignant proliferation. However, the underlying mechanisms in this process remain unknown. Our previous studies have shown that the pathways involved in self-renewal capacity of bone marrow (BM) cells in Mll-Af9 mice exposed to benzene for life are significantly activated after severe blood toxicity.

The viral protein mutations can modify virus-host interactions during virus evolution, and thus alter the extent of infection or pathogenicity. Studies indicate that nucleocapsid (N) protein of SARS-CoV-2 participates in viral genome assembly, intracellular signal regulation and immune interference. However, its biological function in viral evolution is not well understood.

The Satisfaction With Life Scale (SWLS) is a widely used self-report measure of subjective well-being, but studies of its measurement invariance across a large number of nations remain limited. Here, we utilised the Body Image in Nature (BINS) dataset-with data collected between 2020 and 2022 -to assess measurement invariance of the SWLS across 65 nations, 40 languages, gender identities, and age groups (N = 56,968). All participants completed the SWLS under largely uniform conditions.

Developing new materials capable of the safe and efficient removal of toxic substances has become a research hotspot in the field of materials science, as these toxic substances pose a serious threat to human health, both directly and indirectly. Covalent organic frameworks (COFs), as an emerging class of crystalline porous materials, have advantages such as large specific surface area, tunable pore size, designable structure, and good biocompatibility, which have been proven to be a superior adsorbent design platform for toxic substances capture. This review will summarize the synthesis methods of COFs and the properties and characteristics of typical toxicants, discuss the design strategies of COF-based adsorbents for the removal of toxic substances, and highlight the recent advancements in COF-based adsorbents as robust candidates for the efficient removal of various types of toxicants, such as animal toxins, microbial toxins, phytotoxins, environmental toxins, The adsorption performance and related mechanisms of COF-based adsorbents for different types of toxic substances will be discussed.
