Article Synopsis
  • - The study aimed to measure subfoveal choroidal thickness (SFCT) in highly myopic eyes and to find associated risk factors, using advanced imaging techniques.
  • - Researchers analyzed data from 103 highly myopic eyes and 227 normal eyes, revealing that SFCT was significantly lower in myopic eyes, especially in certain regions of the macula.
  • - The findings indicated that SFCT decreases with age, longer axial length, and the presence of posterior staphyloma, which could help inform risk management for myopic degeneration.

Cell Immunol

November 2024

Institution: Beijing Ophthalmology & Visual Science Key Lab, Beijing Tongren Eye Center, Beijing Tongren Hospital, Capital Medical University, Beijing 100730, China. Electronic address:

Uveitis is a prevalent inflammatory eye disease that primarily affects working-age individuals and can lead to blindness if untreated. Interleukin-10 (IL-10) is a multifunctional cytokine with broad immunosuppressive properties and plays a significant role in various pathological and physiological processes. However, its specific role and underlying mechanisms in uveitis remain incompletely understood.

October 2024

Beijing Institute of Otolaryngology, Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, Key Laboratory of Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery (Capital Medical University), Ministry of Education, Beijing Tongren Hospital, Dongcheng District, Capital Medical University, 17 Chongnei Hougou Hutong, Beijing, 100005, China.

Understanding speech-in-noise is a significant challenge for individuals with age-related hearing loss (ARHL). Evidence suggests that increased activity in the frontal cortex compensates for impaired speech perception in healthy aging older adults. However, whether older adults with ARHL still show preserved compensatory function and the specific neural regulatory mechanisms underlying such compensation remains largely unclear.

December 2024

Beijing Institute of Ophthalmology, Beijing Tongren Eye Center, Beijing Tongren Hospital, Capital Medical University, Beijing Ophthalmology & Visual Sciences Key Laboratory, Beijing, China. Electronic address:

Aim: To produce a unique metric 'autoimmune disease (ADs)' based on various single autoimmune disorder and estimate its case number and age-standardized rate of incidence for each stage in life cycle of women from 1990 to 2019, and to further explore their temporal trends at global, regional, and national levels.

Electronic address:

Article Synopsis
  • Group 2 innate lymphoid cells (ILC2s) are primarily activated by cytokines from epithelial cells rather than specific antigens, and their response to such antigens is not well understood.
  • In experiments with house dust mites (HDM), it was found that HDM stimulation increased the production of type 2 cytokines (IL-5 and IL-13), prevented cell death, and encouraged ILC2 proliferation, with RNA sequencing revealing upregulated genes related to these responses.
  • The activation of ILC2s by HDM is mediated through the toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) and involves several signaling pathways (ERK, p38, and NF-κB), highlighting the role of

J Vis Exp

October 2024

Beijing Institute of Ophthalmology, Beijing Tongren Eye Center, Beijing Tongren Hospital, Capital Medical University;

Mitochondrial transfer is a normal physiological phenomenon that occurs widely among various types of cells. In the study to date, the most important pathway for mitochondrial transport is through tunneling nanotubes (TNTs). There have been many studies reporting that mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) can transfer mitochondria to other cells by TNTs.

Following the publication of this article, a concerned reader drew to the Editor's attention that the experimental design of the western blot assay experiments portrayed in Fig. 5A on p. 7804, and the overall organization of this figure, may have been flawed, as mitochondrial and cytosolic proteins were featured in the figure with only one set of supporting control western blot data; in this scenario, the proteins would necessarily have needed to have been obtained from two separate cell samples in different experiments, and blotted on to separate gels.

Shenzhen Branch, Guangdong Laboratory for Lingnan Modern Agriculture, Key Laboratory of Livestock and Poultry Multi-Omics of MARA, Agricultural Genomics Institute at Shenzhen, Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences, Buxin Road NO. 97, Dapeng District, Shenzhen 518124, China.

Enhancers play a critical role in dynamically regulating spatial-temporal gene expression and establishing cell identity, underscoring the significance of designing them with specific properties for applications in biosynthetic engineering and gene therapy. Despite numerous high-throughput methods facilitating genome-wide enhancer identification, deciphering the sequence determinants of their activity remains challenging. Here, we present the DREAM (DNA cis-Regulatory Elements with controllable Activity design platforM) framework, a novel deep learning-based approach for synthetic enhancer design.

Background: Previous research has examined the associations of preschoolers' 24-h movement behaviours, including light and moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (LPA and MVPA), sedentary behaviour (SB), sleep, with physical fitness in isolation, ignoring intrinsically compositional nature of movement data while increasing the risk of collinearity. Thus, this study investigated the associations of preschoolers' 24-h Movement behaviours composition with physical fitness, estimated changes in physical fitness when time was reallocated between movement behaviours composition, and determined whether associations differ between different genders, using compositional data analysis.

Methods: In the cross-sectional study, a total of 275 preschoolers (3 ~ 6 y) from China were included.
