IL-10: the master immunomodulatory cytokine in allergen immunotherapy.

Expert Rev Clin Immunol

January 2025

Department of Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery, Beijing TongRen Hospital, Capital Medical University, Beijing, China.

Introduction: Allergen immunotherapy (AIT) is the only disease-modifying treatment for patients with IgE-mediated allergic diseases. Successful AIT can induce long-term immune tolerance to the common allergen, which provides clinical benefits for years after discontinuation. The cytokine interleukin (IL)-10, as a key anti-inflammatory mediator with strong immunoregulatory functions, has drawn increasing attention over the past decades.

Heliyon

September 2024

Key Laboratory for Biomechanics and Mechanobiology of Ministry of Education, Beijing Advanced Innovation Center for Biomedical Engineering, School of Biological Science and Medical Engineering, Beihang University, Beijing, China.

Purpose: To investigate the change in the vault of the implantable collamer lens (ICL) under dark-to-light conditions and its association with anterior chamber and lens parameters in patients undergoing ICL surgery.

Methods: In 76 eyes from 40 patients, preoperative anterior chamber volume (ACV), pupil diameter (PD), anterior chamber angle, central corneal thickness (CCT), white-to-white (WTW), lens thickness (LT), axial length (AL), spherical equivalent (SE) and patient's age were collected. Postoperative vault, PD and LT were measured under dark and light conditions using anterior segment optical coherence tomography (CASIA2; TOMEY, Japan), and changes and lens displacement under dark-to-light conditions were calculated.

Comparing 24-hour IOP fluctuation slope curve between newly diagnosed ocular hypertension and primary open-angle glaucoma.

BMJ Open Ophthalmol

September 2024

Beijing Tongren Eye Center, Beijing Tongren Hospital, Beijing Ophthalmology & Visual Science Key Lab, Capital Medical University, Beijing, China

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to compare the 24-hour intraocular pressure (IOP) fluctuations between patients newly diagnosed with ocular hypertension (OHT) and primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG).
  • It involved monitoring IOP every 2 hours over a full day, finding that POAG patients had a steeper increase in IOP during the daytime and a faster decrease at night compared to OHT patients.
  • The findings suggest that larger IOP fluctuations might indicate a higher risk of POAG, but the study has limitations, including relying on a single 24-hour measurement and needing further research for confirmation.

A longitudinal multimodal MRI study of the visual network in postoperative delirium.

Brain Imaging Behav

December 2024

Department of Critical Care Medicine, Beijing Tiantan Hospital, Capital Medical University, Beijing, 100070, China.

Although structural and functional damage to the brain is considered to be an important neurobiological mechanism of postoperative delirium (POD), alterations in the visual cortical network related to this vulnerability have not yet been determined. In this study, we investigated the impact of alterations in the visual network (VN), as measured by structural and functional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), on the development of POD. Thirty-six adult patients with frontal glioma who underwent elective craniotomy were recruited.

Transcription factor EGR2 alleviates autoimmune uveitis via activation of GDF15 to modulate the retinal microglial phenotype.

Proc Natl Acad Sci U S A

September 2024

Department of Beijing Institute of Ophthalmology, Beijing Tongren Eye Center, Beijing Tongren Hospital, Capital Medical University, Beijing 100730, China.

Uveitis is a vision-threatening disease primarily driven by a dysregulated immune response, with retinal microglia playing a pivotal role in its progression. Although the transcription factor EGR2 is known to be closely associated with uveitis, including Vogt-Koyanagi-Harada disease and Behcet's disease, and is essential for maintaining the dynamic homeostasis of autoimmunity, its exact role in uveitis remains unclear. In this study, diminished EGR2 expression was observed in both retinal microglia from experimental autoimmune uveitis (EAU) mice and inflammation-induced human microglia cell line (HMC3).

Associations of static and dynamic iris parameters in healthy Chinese individuals: the Handan Eye Study.

Eye (Lond)

December 2024

Beijing Tongren Eye Center, Beijing Key Laboratory of Ophthalmology and Visual Science, Beijing Tongren Hospital, Capital Medical University, Beijing, China.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study aimed to investigate how demographic factors like age and sex influence changes in the iris's physiology, particularly in healthy Chinese individuals aged 40 and above.
  • - Utilizing anterior segment optical coherence tomography, researchers analyzed data from 465 participants and found that both pupil diameter and iris area decrease with age, while iris curvature increases; women generally showed smaller iris thickness and changes compared to men.
  • - The results suggest that older age, larger lens thickness, and specific changes in iris characteristics are linked to reduced iris area change, contributing to understanding why older adults and women are more likely to experience primary angle closure disease.
