Up to half of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) cases are diagnosed at an advanced stage, for which effective treatment options are lacking, resulting in a poor prognosis. Over the past few years, the combination of immune checkpoint inhibitors and anti-angiogenic targeted therapy has proven highly efficacious in treating advanced HCC, significantly extending patients' survival and providing a potential for sequential curative surgery. After sequential curative hepatectomy or liver transplantation following conversion therapy, patients can receive long-term survival benefits.

Analysis of vaginal microbiota during postpartum and postmenopausal periods based on metagenomics.

BMC Microbiol

November 2024

Beijing Obstetrics and Gynecology Hospital, Beijing Maternal and Child Health Care Hospital, Capital Medical University, Beijing, 100026, China.

Background: Postmenopausal and the postpartum periods are essential physiological phases that result in low estrogen levels in women; however, they are important to female reproductive health. Traditional as well as new detection methods (such as 16 S RNA sequencing) have limitations in detecting the composition of vaginal microbiota. Therefore, in this study, we used metagenomic detection technology to study the composition of vaginal microbiota in postmenopausal and postpartum women.

Osteoarthritis (OA) is the most common joint disease that usually starts from joint cartilage injury. Notch2, a versatile signaling in human development and diseases, was recently uncovered to be an important regulator in chondrocyte damage. However, in OA chondrocytes, how Notch2 activation is dysregulated is largely unknown.

Article Synopsis
  • Simnotrelvir (S/R) has shown strong antiviral effects against SARS-CoV-2 and, in a recent study, effectively reduced hospitalization rates for COVID-19 in patients during XBB variant surges.
  • The study was conducted in China with 3522 adult participants diagnosed with mild to moderate COVID-19, comparing those treated with S/R to a control group not receiving antivirals.
  • Results indicated that S/R significantly lowered the incidence of COVID-19-related hospitalizations and did not result in any deaths, especially benefiting older patients and those with existing health risks.

Background: Nongovernment medical institutions have gradually become a significant part of China's healthcare system, with a growing numbers of staff. However, the current status of anesthesiology staff in these institutions is unclear. To gain insight into this situation and to compare it with public hospitals, the national anesthesia professional committee of the Chinese Nongovernment Medical Institutions Association (CNMIA) designed and conducted the national cross-sectional survey.

Aberrant mechanical forces were considered as an important factor for osteoarthritis (OA) pathogenesis. Plant homeodomain finger-containing protein 8 (PHF8) participated in osteogenic differentiation and inflammatory progression. However, the role of PHF8 in aberrant force-related OA remains to be elucidated.

Importance: Abnormal blood pressure pattern is an independent risk factor for vascular events. Blood pressure variability can predict cardiovascular and cerebrovascular disease outcomes and is closely associated with the risk of cognitive impairment. However, the relationship between blood pressure variability and cerebral small vessel disease neuroimaging markers remains unclear.

Background: Trigeminal neuralgia (TN) is a common form of craniofacial pain, and Radiofrequency thermocoagulation (RFT) has become a commonly utilized treatment modality for TN. However, the complex anatomical configuration of the maxillofacial region and the difficulties inherent in positioning the neck in a hyperextended manner can present challenges for CT-guided punctures.

Aim: The objective of this study is to assess the effectiveness and safety of 3D printed tooth-supported template(3D-PTST) guided RFT in patients who have previously undergone unsuccessful CT-guided puncture.

June 2024

Department of Stomatology, Shijingshan Teaching Hospital of Capital Medical University, Beijing Shijingshan Hospital, Beijing, 100043, China.

Lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-triggered damage in human dental pulp cells (hDPCs) is associated with the progression of gingivitis, which is inflammation of the gingival tissue. Nesfatin-1 is a peptide secreted by neurons and peripheral tissues. Here, we report a novel property of Nesfatin-1 in ameliorating LPS-induced inflammatory response and senescence in hDPCs.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study investigated the potential benefits of bailout angioplasty or stenting (BAOS) for patients with large vessel occlusion acute ischemic stroke (LVO-AIS) who experienced unsuccessful recanalization after thrombectomy, as poor outcomes are common in such cases.
  • - This randomized controlled trial involved 348 participants from 36 hospitals across China, who were either assigned to the BAOS intervention group or a control group receiving standard therapy, with outcomes measured by changes in the modified Rankin Scale at 90 days.
  • - Findings indicated a diverse participant demographic, primarily male, with a median age of 63, and both safety and efficacy of the BAOS procedure were evaluated without loss to follow-up for the primary outcomes.

Objective: Surgical treatment with internal fixation, specifically percutaneous fixation with three cannulated compression screws (CCSs), is the preferred choice for young and middle-aged patients. The mechanical advantage of the optimal spatial configuration with three screws provides maximum dispersion and cortical support. We suspect that the spatial proportion of the oblique triangle configuration (OTC) in the cross-section of the femoral neck isthmus (FNI) may significantly improve shear and fatigue resistance of the fixed structure, thereby stabilizing the internal fixation system in femoral neck fracture (FNF).

The mechanisms of Salvia miltiorrhiza (SM) and Tanshinone IIA (Tan IIA) in the treatment of atherosclerosis was examined by combining network pharmacology and molecular biology experiments. The TCMSP and BATMAN-TCM databases provided 104 SM candidate ingredients and 813 target genes, while GEO and GeneCards databases identified 35 overlapping targets between SM and coronary artery disease (CAD). From these data, we constructed a CAD-target-active ingredient network, and using Gene Ontology (GO) and KEGG pathway analysis, 211 GO terms and 43 pathways were identified, which facilitated the construction of a key active ingredient-target-pathway network.
