Background: Serum thyroglobulin (Tg) is a critical marker for monitoring tumor recurrence and metastasis in patients who have undergone total thyroidectomy for differentiated thyroid cancer (DTC). While the definitive role of preoperative serum Tg in DTC is not yet established, studies suggest its importance in differentiating between benign and malignant thyroid nodules with indeterminate cytology, as well as in predicting distant metastasis (DM) in patients with DTC.
Methods: A thorough literature review was conducted on the use of preoperative serum Tg in differentiating between benign and malignant thyroid nodules, and in evaluating the extent of DTC lesions.

To investigate whether high body mass index (BMI) had adverse effects on the postoperative outcomes for patients who underwent anterior or posterior cervical fusion procedures. A literature search were conducted in PubMed, Embase, and Web of Science. Comparative or controlled studies that examined the influences of high BMI on postoperative outcomes after cervical fusion procedures were included.

BACKGROUND Short-segment pedicle screw instrumentation provides superior outcomes in treating thoracolumbar fractures. Nevertheless, the effect of intermediate screws on the outcome of short-segment instrumentation at the fracture level has not been specifically analyzed. We performed an update meta-analysis of the effect of additional vertebroplasty on the outcome of short-segment instrumentation to determine the role of screws for patients with fractured vertebra.

Background: Clinical laboratory results have limited value unless they are appropriately analyzed and interpreted. Clinicians may neglect key abnormal laboratory findings because they lack time or sufficient information to adequately analyze the volume of test results received. It is important that the clinical significance of test results is analyzed and communicated appropriately in the report.

The present study aimed to detect miR‑29a expression in the plasma of patients with lumbar spinal stenosis (LSS) and to investigate the clinical significance. A total of 30 patients with LSS, 27 patients with lumbar intervertebral disc herniation (LDH), 27 healthy people and 7 patients that had succumbed to mortality were involved in the present study for specimen collection. Expression levels of miR‑29a in plasma and intervertebral disc tissue were detected by reverse transcription‑quantitative polymerase chain reaction analysis.

Background: Simulation-based training (SBT) has become a standard for medical education. However, the efficacy of simulation based training in airway management education remains unclear.
Methods: The aim of this study was to evaluate all published evidence comparing the effectiveness of SBT for airway management versus non-simulation based training (NSBT) on learner and patient outcomes.

The specific role of Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) in bleomycin-induced lung fibrosis of mice, a model of human idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, has not been characterized. We injected bleomycin intratracheally into TLR4 knockout (TLR4(-/-)) and wild-type (WT) mice. Twenty-one days after injection, mice were sacrificed and their lungs were harvested for pathological, hydroxyproline, mRNA expression, and collagen I analyses.

Background: Little is known about the association between the cortical microinfarcts (CMIs) and intracranial atherosclerosis (ICAS) in Chinese patients with ischemic stroke. This study was designed to analyze the association and evaluate the role of CMIs in clinical outcomes.
Methods: We evaluated 1421 consecutive patients who had experienced an acute cerebral ischemia within 7 days after symptom onset and evaluated the presence of CMIs and ICAS based on patients' 3.

Current guidelines established in the USA and Europe for coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) suggest that patients ≥65 and ≥70 years of age, or with certain atherosclerotic-risk factors, should be screened preoperatively for extracranial carotid artery stenosis (CAS) to assess their risk of perioperative stoke. We sought factors that should be taken into consideration when treating Chinese CABG patients using CABG guidelines based on an analysis of CAS in a large cohort of Chinese CABG patients. We analyzed data for 1558 Chinese CABG patients who were screened preoperatively for CAS using duplex ultrasonography at a single institution.

We aimed to investigate how 5-FU-PLA-O-CMC-NP (5-FPOCN) inhibits the proliferation of the SW480 colon cancer cell line. Following the treatment of cell line SW480 with 0.1, 1, 10 or 100 μg/ml 5-FPOCN or 5-fluorouracil (fluorouracil, 5-Fu) for 0, 24, 48, or 72, the rate of cell was tested by the tetrazolium assay (MTT).

Background: It is well known that poor sepsis outcomes are related to delays in diagnosis and treatment.
Objectives: The aim of this study was to compare the mortality rate between two groups of patients, one group presenting before and one group presenting after implementation of the Surviving Sepsis Campaign (SSC) sepsis performance improvement bundles in the Emergency Department (ED).
Methods: This was a prospective study.

c-Abl is a proto-oncogene that is essential for mouse development and tissue homeostasis. Misregulation of c-Abl, as seen in the constitutively active BCR-ABL, is the leading cause of human chronic myeloid leukemia. However, how the Abl proteins execute their functions still remains largely unknown.

Objectives: Although congestive heart failure (CHF), chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and asthma patients typically present with abnormal auscultatory findings on lung examination, respiratory sounds are not normally subjected to rigorous analysis. The aim of this study was to evaluate in detail the distribution of respiratory sound intensity in CHF, COPD, and asthma patients during acute exacerbation.
Methods: Respiratory sounds throughout the respiratory cycle were captured and displayed using an acoustic-based imaging technique.

Objective: To compare the serological characters of an outbreak of hepatitis E and evaluate sensitivity and specificity of anti-HEV E2-IgM.
Methods: The sera collected from the employees of an outbreak unit were detected for anti-HEV E2-IgM and IgG, and the serum samples from a neighboring department were used as control. The results detected with anti-HEV E2-IgM, IgG and Genelab anti-HEV IgM, IgG in some samples were compared.
