Article Synopsis
  • Ureteral strictures (US) can impair kidney function, and this study focused on the effects of ureteral reconstruction surgery on renal health in patients with a solitary kidney (SK).
  • Out of 61 SK patients treated, the surgery success rate was 90.16%, and while overall eGFR showed no significant change post-surgery, patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) saw notable improvements in their eGFR.
  • The study concluded that ureteral reconstruction surgery is effective in maintaining renal function and lowering systolic blood pressure in SK patients suffering from US.

Minimally invasive versus open ileal ureter with ileocystoplasty: comparative outcomes and 5-year experience.

BMC Urol

June 2024

Department of Urology, Institute of Urology, Peking University First Hospital, Peking University, National Urological Cancer Center, Xicheng District, Beijing, China.

Article Synopsis
  • This study analyzes the outcomes of ileal ureter with ileocystoplasty (IUC) in 20 patients, comparing minimally invasive procedures (like laparoscopic and robotic surgeries) to open surgeries over a period from December 2017 to April 2023.
  • Results show that while both methods were effective, minimally invasive surgeries resulted in less blood loss and shorter hospital stays than open surgeries.
  • The success rate for IUC was 100%, but the study suggests that larger trials with longer follow-up are necessary for more definitive conclusions.

Background: The recent randomized controlled trials studying intracranial atherosclerotic stenosis (ICAS) have used digital subtraction angiography (DSA) to quantify stenosis and enroll patients. However, some disadvantages of DSA such as invasive features, contrast agent overuse, and X-ray radiation overexposure, were not considered in these studies. This study aimed to explore whether computed tomography angiography (CTA) with semi-automatic analysis could be an alternative method to DSA in quantifying the absolute stenotic degree in clinical trials.

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), has spread worldwide and become a major global public health concern. Although novel investigational COVID-19 antiviral candidates such as the Pfizer agent PAXLOVID™, molnupiravir, baricitinib, remdesivir, and favipiravir are currently used to treat patients with COVID-19, there is still a critical need for the development of additional treatments, as the recommended therapeutic options are frequently ineffective against SARS-CoV-2. The efficacy and safety of vaccines remain uncertain, particularly with the emergence of several variants.

[Ureteral stenosis following hematopoietic stem cell transplantation: A case report].

Beijing Da Xue Xue Bao Yi Xue Ban

August 2022

Department of Urology, Peking University First Hospital; Institute of Urology, Peking University; National Urological Cancer Center, Beijing 100034, China.

Ureteral stenosis is a comparatively rare complication following hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT). The etiology is still unclear and most believe that this may be due to the reactivation of BK virus in a state of immunodeficiency. In the later stages of ureteral stenosis with scarring, invasive interventions must be taken to relieve the hydronephrosis.
