Domains play an essential role in determining the piezoelectric properties of polymers. The conventional method for achieving ultrafine piezoelectric domain structures for polymers is multiphase polymerization, which is not the primary choice for industrial-scale applications because of its complex synthesis and weak mechanical properties. In this study, it is demonstrated for the first time that a nanoscale domain design can be achieved in a commercially available polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) homopolymer through a simple fabrication method involving cyclic compression and rapid freezing.

Triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) are highly promising as implantable, degradable energy sources and self-powered sensors. However, the degradable triboelectric materials are often limited in terms of contact electrification and mechanical properties. Here, a bio-macromolecule-assisted toughening strategy for PVA aerogel-based triboelectric materials is proposed.

It is commonly accepted that batteries perform better at low current densities below the mass-transport limit, which restricts their current rate and capacity. Here, it is demonstrated that the performance of Zn metal electrodes can be dramatically enhanced at current densities and cut-off capacities exceeding the mass-transport limit by using pulsed-current protocols. These protocols achieve cumulative plating/stripping capacities of 11.

The growth of the Internet of Things has focused attention on visualized sensors as a key technology. However, it remains challenging to achieve high sensing accuracy and self-power ability. Here, we propose a self-powered visualized tactile-acoustic sensor (SVTAS) based on an elaborated triboelectrification-induced electroluminescence (TIEL) unit.

Aluminum-sulfur batteries (ASBs) are emerging as promising energy storage systems due to their safety, low cost, and high theoretical capacity. However, it remains a challenge to overcome voltage hysteresis and short cycle life in the sulfur/AlS conversion reaction, which hinders the development of ASBs. Here, we studied a high-voltage ASB system based on sulfur oxidation in an AlCl/urea electrolyte.

As a novel energy harvesting technology, bettering the output performance of triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) is vital. Although quite a number methods to increase charge density have been proposed, challenges such as high impedance matching and low output current persist, severely limit the energy utilization efficiency of TENGs. Here, a new power management circuit (PMC) is proposed that through charge storage and release strategy.

Monitoring surface deformation is crucial for the early warning of landslides, facilitating timely preventive measures. Triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) demonstrates great potential for self-powered distributed monitoring in remote and power-scarce landslide areas. However, landslides deform typically at a rate of a few millimeters per day (mm d), making it challenging for TENG to directly monitor the deformation process.

Braille is an essential implement for the blind to communicate with outside, but traditional Braille is limited to a paper-based format that cannot directly provide real-time word information. In this work, a flexible virtual electrotactile Braille is proposed that can benefit the blind from blocked interaction. The Braille interface, S-shaped wires and a sphere electrode with a textile fingerstall integrated by silicone, offers flexibility and simultaneously generates the microgap through textile cracks, which achieves virtual electrotactile sensation by electrostatic discharge.

Interfacial contact electrification can catalyze redox reactions through a process called contact-electro-catalysis (CEC). The two main reaction paths for producing reactive oxygen species via CEC are the water oxidation reaction (WOR) and the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). Herein, we designed a polymer/metal Janus composite catalyst that regulated the reaction rates of the WOR and ORR based on the catalyst composition.

Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), a versatile polymer, is extensively used across many industries, such as chemicals, food, healthcare, textiles, and packaging. However, research on applying PVA to triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) remains limited. Consequently, we chose PVA as the primary material to explore its contact electrification mechanisms at the molecular level, alongside materials like Polyethylene (PE), Polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF), and Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE).

Tribovoltaic nanogenerator (TVNG) is an emerging energy device with the advantages of direct current and high power density. At present, many TVNGs are based on single-crystal materials, which are expensive and fragile during structural processing. Here, a polysilicon-based TVNG for bearing in situ rotational speed sensing is developed, which has the same level of performance and lower cost compared to monocrystalline silicon.
