Essential hypertension (EH) with secondary insomnia is associated with increased risks of neuroinflammation, neuronal damage, and Alzheimer's disease (AD). However, its relationship with specific cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) biomarkers of neuronal damage and neuroinflammation remains unclear. This case-control study compared CSF biomarker levels across three groups: healthy controls (HC, n = 64), hypertension-controlled (HTN-C, n = 54), and hypertension-uncontrolled (HTN-U, n = 107) groups, all EH participants experiencing secondary insomnia.

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a pervasive and incapacitating respiratory condition, distinguished by airway inflammation and the remodeling of the lower respiratory tract. Central to its pathogenesis is an intricate inflammatory process, wherein macrophages exert significant regulatory functions, and High mobility group box 1 (HMGB1) emerges as a pivotal inflammatory mediator potentially driving COPD progression. This study explores the hypothesis that HMGB1, within macrophages, modulates COPD through inflammatory mechanisms, focusing on its influence on macrophage polarization.

Background: Understanding the interplay between psychopathology of alcohol withdrawal syndrome (AWS) in alcohol use disorder (AUD) patients may improve the effectiveness of relapse interventions for AUD. Network theory of mental disorders assumes that mental disorders persist not of a common functional disorder, but from a sustained feedback loop between symptoms, thereby explaining the persistence of AWS and the high relapse rate of AUD. The current study aims to establish a network of AWS, identify its core symptoms and find the bridges between the symptoms which are intervention target to relieve the AWS and break the self-maintaining cycle of AUD.

Background: Apoprotein A-I (ApoA-I) and Apoprotein B (ApoB) have emerged as novel cardiovascular risk biomarkers influenced by feeding behavior. Hypothalamic appetite peptides regulate feeding behavior and impact lipoprotein levels, which effects vary in different weight states. This study explores the intricate relationship between body mass index (BMI), hypothalamic appetite peptides, and apolipoproteins with emphasis on the moderating role of body weight in the association between neuropeptide Y (NPY), ghrelin, orexin A (OXA), oxytocin in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and peripheral ApoA-I and ApoB.

Objective: Cigarette smoking and low peripheral nitric oxide synthase (NOS) levels are strongly associated with sleep disorders. However, whether cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) NOS relates to sleep disorders and whether CSF NOS mediates the relationship between cigarette smoking and sleep disorders is unclear.
Methods: We measured CSF levels of total NOS (tNOS) and its isoforms (inducible NOS [iNOS] and constitutive NOS [cNOS]) in 191 Chinese male subjects.

Background: Sleeping late has been associated with cognitive impairment, and insufficient sleep can affect the secretion of feeding-related cytokines. Feeding-related cytokines may contribute to cognitive deficits resulting from delayed bedtime. Glial cell line-derived neurotrophic factor (GDNF) and mesencephalic astrocyte-derived neurotrophic factor (MANF), which are feeding-related neurotrophic factors, have been associated with improved cognitive function and neuroprotective abilities.

Many pregnant women experience sleep disorders, and amino acid levels could play a crucial role in affecting maternal sleep. To explore this potential relationship, an accurate and effective UHPLC-MS/MS method has been developed to monitor 18 amino acids in the plasma samples of pregnant women. This method aims to assess how plasma amino acid levels might be linked to sleep disorders during pregnancy.

Objective: This study aimed to reveal associations between metabolic hormones in cerebral spinal fluid (CSF) and cigarette smoking-induced weight gain and to explore the underlying mechanism.
Methods: A total of 156 adult men were included, comprising active smokers and nonsmokers. In addition to demographic information and body mass index (BMI), plasma levels of ApoA1 and ApoB, high-density lipoprotein, low-density lipoprotein, cholesterol, triglyceride, alanine aminotransferase, aspartate aminotransferase, and gamma-glutamyl transferase in the participants were measured.
Objective: Preventing adverse events due to unstable oxygen saturation (SpO2) at night in pregnant women is of utmost importance. Poor sleep has been demonstrated to impact SpO2 levels. Nowadays, many gravida have a habit of prolonged exposure to light before sleep, which can disrupt their sleep.

Rationale: Patients with schizophrenia with second-generation antipsychotics (SGAs) treatment have shown an increased risk of bone fragility and susceptibility to fracture; however, it is still unclear whether this risk is derived from the effect of antipsychotics on balance of bone metabolism.
Objectives: We investigated the changes of two bone turnover biomarkers (BTMs) concentrations in people with schizophrenia receiving SGAs: procollagen type I aminoterminal propeptide (PINP) and C-terminal telopeptide of type I collagen (CTX-1) as BTMs of osteogenesis and bone resorption, respectively, to explore how antipsychotics contribute to bone fragility.
Methods: We recruited 59 Chinese male patients with schizophrenia (32 drug-naïve first-episode (DNFE) patients and 27 chronic patients) to undergo 8 weeks SGAs treatment.

The levels of oxidative stress and proinflammatory factors in perimenopausal females increased, and they were also deeply troubled by insomnia. The occurrence of insomnia is related to the changes of oxidative stress and inflammation levels in the body. Perimenopausal insomnia may be related to mild systemic inflammation, and oxidative stress can promote chronic inflammation.

Background: Several studies have indicated that the plasma concentration of risperidone increases 3-5-fold during the acute-phase reaction (APR) of inflammation or infection. Psychiatric symptoms are present or deteriorate when the dose is lowered; thus, the complex effects of inflammation on the pharmacokinetics of risperidone need to be examined.
Methods: We established a APR model in rabbits induced by lipopolysaccharide (LPS) and studied the effect of APR on pharmacokinetics, distribution and disposition of risperidone in vivo and in vitro.
