State Key Laboratory of Lithospheric Evolution, Institute of Geology and Geophysics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Beijing 100029, China.

Article Synopsis
  • The Bayan Obo deposit in China is a significant source of rare earth elements (REE), niobium (Nb), and iron (Fe), and understanding the genetic models for these metals is essential for resource management.
  • Current research has made progress in identifying when Nb enrichment occurs, using advanced U-Pb dating on ferrocolumbite to determine the ages of mineralization events as 1312 ± 47 Ma, 438 ± 7 Ma, and 268 ± 5 Ma.
  • These findings suggest that multiple stages of mineralization are crucial for Nb enrichment, linking different ages to specific geological events, which may also inform the understanding of Nb enrichment in other REE deposits.

With the rapid advancement of remote-sensing technology, the spectral information obtained from hyperspectral remote-sensing imagery has become increasingly rich, facilitating detailed spectral analysis of Earth's surface objects. However, the abundance of spectral information presents certain challenges for data processing, such as the "curse of dimensionality" leading to the "Hughes phenomenon", "strong correlation" due to high resolution, and "nonlinear characteristics" caused by varying surface reflectances. Consequently, dimensionality reduction of hyperspectral data emerges as a critical task.

Aim: It is essential for health researchers to have a systematic understanding of third-party variables that influence both the exposure and outcome under investigation, as shown by a directed acyclic graph (DAG). The traditional construction of DAGs through literature review and expert knowledge often needs to be more systematic and consistent, leading to potential biases. We try to introduce an automatic approach to building network linking variables of interest.

Sustainable Application of Waste Sludges from the Wastewater Treatment Plant Generated during the Production of Heating Devices in the Construction Industry.

Materials (Basel)

February 2024

"Vinča" Institute of Nuclear Sciences, National Institute of the Republic of Serbia, University of Belgrade, 22-24 Mike Petrovića Alasa, 11351 Belgrade, Serbia.

This research presented, for the first time, the results of the successful application of the waste press sludges, WSLP (plant for lacquer and paint) and WSEP (powdery enamel plant), from a wastewater treatment plant generated during heating device production in the construction industry. The results of WSEP characterization and its influence on cement paste, mortar, and concrete properties showed that this material could be used as a cement replacement (with a maximum replacement amount of 20%) in producing mortar and concrete. Although waste WSLP sludge does not possess pozzolanic properties and does not meet the criteria prescribed by the standards for application in mortar and concrete due to its chemical inertness and fineness, as well as its extended setting time, it can be used as a replacement for stone filler or other powdered mineral admixture in the production of self-compacting concrete (SCC) in amounts up to 100%, with a maximum quantity of up to 100 kg/m.

In China, the exploitation of most unconventional oil and gas reservoirs is dependent on hydraulic fracturing, which is a key method employed when developing tight gas formations. Numerous scholars and field engineers, both domestically and internationally, have conducted extensive numerical simulations and physical experiments to study crack propagation and predict post-fracturing productivity in hydraulic fracturing. Although some progress has been reported in this regard, it is difficult to accurately predict the well productivity using mechanistic models owing to the vertical multilayered development of tight gas reservoirs.
