Beijing Friendship Hospital - Affiliate of Capital University of Medical Sciences, Beijing Tropical Medicine Research Institute, 95 Yang An Road, Beijing 100050, China.

Leprosy continues to be detected at near stable rates in China even with established control programs, necessitating new knowledge and alternative methods to interrupt transmission. A molecular epidemiology investigation of 190 patients was undertaken to define Mycobacterium leprae strain types and discern genetic relationships and clusters in endemic and non-endemic regions spanning seventeen provinces and two autonomous regions. The findings support multiple locus variable number of tandem repeat (VNTR) analysis as a useful tool in uncovering characteristic patterns across the multiethnic and divergent geographic landscape of China.

Objective: To analyze the result of the distal radial fractures with or without ulnar styloid fracture.

Methods: From January 2007 to October 2010, 62 cases with distal radial fractures were treated by ORIF, of which 52 were followed-up entirely with an average of 15 months (6-34 months), including 6 male cases and 46 female cases at an average age of (62.25±8.

Beijing Friendship Hospital-Affiliate of Capital University of Medical Sciences, Beijing Tropical Medicine Research Institute, 95 Yong An Road, Beijing 100050, People's Republic of China.

Objective: To evaluate the reliability and feasibility of two methods of multilocus variable number of tandem repeat analysis (MLVA) for strain typing of M. leprae, and to study whether short tandem repeat loci are stable and suitable for epidemiological study of leprosy.

Methods: Total DNA was extracted from skin biopsies of 20 new multibacillary (MB) patients from China diagnosed in 2006.

Identification and distribution of Mycobacterium leprae genotypes in a region of high leprosy prevalence in China: a 3-year molecular epidemiological study.

J Clin Microbiol

June 2007

Article Synopsis
  • A study was conducted in Qiubei County, China, focusing on the diversity and distribution of Mycobacterium leprae strains, since the region has a leprosy detection rate significantly higher than the national average.
  • The research involved 68 newly diagnosed leprosy patients and utilized multiple-locus variable-number tandem-repeat (MLVA) analysis on DNA from skin biopsies, revealing a range of alleles which allowed for distinct strain identification.
  • The findings indicated that many patients belonged to multicase families with similar VNTR profiles, suggesting that there is localized transmission of leprosy, possibly linked to social interactions in village markets.

Objective: We established diet-induced obesity animal model and observed the influence of obesity on testicle of the male rats.

Methods: Rats in model group were fed with fat-enriched diet for 6 weeks. We measured the body weight and the testis weight and observed the development of testicle by microscope, and compared with those of control group.

We could induce apoptosis in primary cultures of cortical neurons of fetal mice with ceramide or sorbitol. The induction was accompanied by an increase in caspase-3 (CAS-3) activity and depolarization of the inner mitochondrial membrane of neuronal cells which both could be reversed by Herpes simplex virus 1 (HSV-1) infection. We conclude tha HSV-1 infection inhibited the apoptosis, induced in neuronal cells by sorbitol or ceramide, via a CAS-dependent pathway.

Aim: To study the imaging characteristics of eosinophilic myelomeningoencephalitis due to Angiostrongylus cantonensis using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).

Materials And Methods: Seventeen MRI examinations of the brain and spinal cord in five patients with angiostrongyliasis cantonensis of the central nervous system were performed. The final diagnosis was based on typical clinical symptoms, results of blood and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) tests, and the presence of nematode larvae in the CSF.

Objective: To observe the serum levels of leptin and estradiol, ovary development.

Methods: Dietetic obese model were established in female SD rats. Three groups were used: control group, obesity group (fat-enriched diet) and reducing group (fat-enriched diet for 6 weeks, then replaced by a normal diet), and were sacrificed at 0, 3, 6, 9, 12 and 15 weeks after the start of the experiment.
