Reward for altruism and punishment for selfishness are crucial components for the maintenance of society. Past studies have provided strong evidence that people are willing to incur costs to punish selfish behaviors and to reward altruistic behaviors, but how their willingness to do so depends on their relationship with the individuals conducting the anti-social or pro-social behaviors is much less explored. To probe into this question, we devised a three-stage experiment that combined a revised dictator game and third-party reward or punishment.

Previous psychological experiments have shown that predictive inference processing under different textual constraints is modulated by the function of epistemic modality (EM) certainty within the context. Nevertheless, recent neuroscientific studies have not presented positive evidence for such a function during text reading. Consequently, the current study deposited Chinese EMs "" (possibly) and "" (surely) into a predictive inference context to examine whether a directionality of EM certainty influences the processing of predictive inference via the ERP technique.

This study reports on the ongoing experiences of academically transitioning students with textbook-based learning. The study was conducted at a Chinese university among first-semester English-as-a-foreign-language (EFL) students transitioning from high school to university. Qualitative analysis of interviews with the students, students' written reflections, and field notes about their learning activities revealed that their paths were not linear; instead, they experienced both progression and regression in textbook-based learning during their academic transition.

Cognitive neuroscience of aging (CNA) is a relatively young field compared with other branches of cognitive aging (CA). From the beginning of this century, scholars in CNA have contributed many valuable research to explain the cognitive ability decline in aging brains in terms of functional changes, neuromechanism, and neurodegenerative diseases. However, very few studies have systematically reviewed the research in the domain of CAN, with regard to its primary research topics, theories, findings, and future development.

The globalization of trade has caused tremendous pressure on water resources globally, and a virtual water trade provides a new perspective on global freshwater sharing and water sustainability. No study has yet explored the structural characteristics and drivers of the evolution of global virtual water trade networks from a network structure evolution perspective. This paper aims to fill this critical gap by developing a research framework to explore how endogenous network structures and external factors have influenced the evolution of virtual water trade networks.

This paper aims to address the research questions of whether individual's oral health status is associated with subjective well-being, as well as if there is possible moderating role of self-rated oral health among two groups of Chinese older adults (≥55 years old) in Honolulu, Hawai'i and Taichung, Taiwan. Using survey data collected in 2018 ( = 430, Honolulu) and in 2017 ( = 645, Taichung), ordinary least square regressions were applied. Results showed that, for both samples, oral health status was negatively and significantly associated with subjective well-being, and both associations were moderated by self-rated oral health.

Executive functions (EFs) have great impact on language control indexed by language switch costs during production-based language switching. Yet, how they influence language control during comprehension-based language switching between embodied first language (L1, Chinese) emotional words and less embodied second language (L2, English) emotional words is less understood. Employing an emotional priming paradigm, this study recruited Chinese-English bilinguals as participants, and used emotional faces and words as experimental materials to explore the effects of cool [i.

Dictation is considered an efficient exercise for testing the language proficiency of learners of French as a Foreign Language (FFL). However, the traditional teaching approach to dictation reduces the instructional feedback efficiency. To remedy this, this study adopts a design-based research approach and builds an automatic error type annotation platform for dictation practice named FRETA-D (French error type annotation for dictation) to pursue intelligent pedagogical feedback for both FFL teachers and students.

Introduction: While phi-agreement and concord are suggested to differ in nature during the first language (L1) acquisition, the acquisition of adverb-verb TC and SV person/number agreement by Chinese Spanish second language (L2) learners has only received limited attention. The current study examined morphosyntactic processing by advanced Chinese Spanish L2 learners (L2ers), whose L1 lacks the explicit morphological marking of tense and phi-agreement.
Method: Chinese Spanish L2ers and native Spanish speakers were asked to complete a self-paced grammaticality judgment task, where the grammaticality of adverb-verb TC and SV person/number agreement as well as the adverb/subject-verb distance were manipulated.

Overconfidence has undertaken an indispensable role in the psychology of managers and places important significance on managers' behavior and decision-making. This study investigates the effect of Fintech on the psychological traits of managers from the perspective of overconfidence based on the panel data of Chinese A-share non-financial listed firms and the digital inclusive finance index of Chinese prefecture-level cities between 2011 and 2020. The empirical results show that (1) Fintech exerts a negative effect on manager overconfidence; (2) the main channels of the negative effect of Fintech on manager overconfidence include Fintech coverage breadth and Fintech usage depth; (3) for firms with severe financing constraints and lower power concentration, the negative effect of Fintech on manager overconfidence is more prominent; and (4) our benchmark results still hold after a series of robust tests, including IV regression, altering the measurement of Fintech and manager overconfidence, and employing logit model re-estimation.

Existing research on syntactic complexity tends to examine diversity and complexity embedded in grammatical employments which may well be witnessed in formulations of different syntactic structures. Conceivably, the subject syntactic complexity seems to be exercised mostly by non-native speakers and writers. The present study employs pseudo-longitudinal data: essays written by undergraduate students in different levels collected at the same time.
