  • The study investigates the impact of metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) on significant fibrosis in patients with chronic hepatitis B (CHB), aiming to determine if those with both conditions face a higher risk.
  • A total of 1818 patients were analyzed, revealing that those with CHB and MASLD exhibited significant fibrosis at rates of 35.5%, compared to 23.5% in those with just CHB.
  • The findings suggest that MASLD is linked to increased fibrosis in CHB patients, especially for those with three or more cardiometabolic risk factors, highlighting the importance of early detection and intervention.

Article Synopsis
  • High rates of HIV and Treponema pallidum coinfection exist, and HIV can worsen the incidence of neurosyphilis, but risk factors for symptomatic neurosyphilis (SNS) are not well understood.
  • A study reviewed the medical records of 60 male inpatients with syphilis and HIV, finding that 75% were diagnosed with SNS, with meningo-vascular neurosyphilis being most common.
  • Significant factors linked to SNS include the absence of early syphilis treatment and a higher cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) white blood cell count, suggesting that closer monitoring and treatment are crucial, especially regarding young patients with unexplained strokes.

Cell Rep Med

September 2024

Beijing Key Laboratory of POCT for Bioemergency and Clinic (No. BZ0329), Beijing, China; State Key Laboratory of Pathogen and Biosecurity, Beijing Institute of Microbiology and Epidemiology, Beijing, China. Electronic address:

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a prevalent and aggressive cancer that presents significant challenges for early detection. This study introduces the GlyExo-Capture method for isolating fucosylated extracellular vesicles (Fu-EVs) from serum. We analyze microRNA (miRNA) profiles from Fu-EVs in 88 HCC patients and 179 non-HCC controls using next-generation sequencing (NGS) and identify five miRNAs (hsa-let-7a, hsa-miR-21, hsa-miR-125a, hsa-miR-200a, and hsa-miR-150) as biomarkers for HCC diagnosis.

Article Synopsis
  • Trained immunity refers to the long-term changes in innate immune cells that enhance their ability to fight infections, influenced by transcriptional and epigenetic reprogramming.
  • This study examined extensive omics data to investigate the role of human endogenous retroviruses (HERVs) in shaping trained immunity in macrophages, identifying specific HERVs linked to gene expression and inflammatory responses.
  • Findings indicated that 15.3% of HERVs were actively transcribed in a nonrandom manner and were associated with key genes involved in the immune response, suggesting a significant role of HERVs in the training of immune cells.

Adamantinomatous craniopharyngioma (ACP) is a clinically aggressive tumor without effective treatment method. Previous studies proposed a paracrine tumorigenesis model, in which oncogenic β-catenin induces senescence in pituitary stem cells and the senescent cells lead the formation of paracrine tumors through secretion of pro-tumorigenic factors. However, there lacks characterization on senescent cells in ACPs.

October 2024

State Key Laboratory of Medical Proteomics, Beijing Proteome Research Center, National Center for Protein Sciences-Beijing (PHOENIX Center), Beijing Institute of Lifeomics, Beijing, 102206, China.

Article Synopsis
  • Host immunity, influenced by vaccination and prior infections, plays a key role in how SARS-CoV-2 spreads, with a study analyzing the interactions between the virus's mutations and immune responses in vaccinated humans and mice.
  • A new model called the Prevalence Score (P-Score) outperforms previous methods in predicting how new variants could spread in vaccinated groups, emphasizing the importance of vaccine type and timing.
  • The results suggest that combining a wild-type inactivated vaccine with an Omicron mRNA vaccine could offer broader protection against various strains, though specific variants like EG.5.1 still present challenges, informing future vaccine strategies and public health planning.

Trends and Patterns of HIV Transmitted Drug Resistance in China From 2018 to 2023.

J Infect Dis

December 2024

Institute for HIV/AIDS and STD Prevention and Control, Beijing Center for Disease Prevention and Control (CDC), Beijing Academy of Preventive Medicine, Beijing.

Article Synopsis
  • The study examined drug resistance in HIV among newly diagnosed individuals in China from 2018 to 2023 to adapt treatment guidelines.
  • Out of over 22,000 individuals, 4.36% had at least one transmitted drug resistance (TDR) mutation, with the most common being linked to nonnucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors.
  • The prevalence of TDR mutations notably increased from 4.05% to 5.39% over the study years, supporting the ongoing use of NNRTI-based treatment regimens for HIV.

Article Synopsis
  • China adopted the WHO's "treat all" policy in 2016, aiming to improve HIV care through the 95-95-95 targets, which include diagnosing 95% of HIV positive individuals, getting 95% of those diagnosed on treatment, and achieving viral suppression in 95% of treated individuals.
  • Data from 2004 to 2023 showed significant advancements in these targets, correlating with a drop in new HIV infections, as evidenced by a dip in clustering frequency and a peak in cases documented in 2014.
  • The study concludes that while progress has been made, China needs to focus on increasing efforts in the first "95" target to further reduce HIV transmission rates and improve overall outcomes.
