Beware of Spondylitis Following Vertebroplasty: An Unusual Case of Osteoporotic Vertebral Compression Fracture.

Infect Drug Resist

May 2022

Department of Orthopedics, Beijing Ditan Hospital, Capital Medical University, Beijing, 100015, People's Republic of China.

There are two main types of infectious spondylitis reported in literature following kyphoplasty or vertebroplasty: tuberculous spondylitis and pyogenic spondylitis; no cases of spondylitis have been reported to date. We present a unique case of spondylitis with intraspinal abscess following vertebroplasty. The patient suffered from osteoporotic vertebral compression fracture (OVCF) of the L4 vertebra and received vertebroplasty; he ate mutton while traveling in the epidemic area a week before vertebroplasty.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study aimed to evaluate how the Fuzheng Jiedu Xiaoji formula (FJXF) combined with chemoembolization (TACE) affects patients with primary liver cancer (PLC) compared to TACE alone.
  • - Results showed that the combination of FJXF and TACE led to a higher disease control rate (83.3% vs. 61.1%) and improved liver function indicators, like albumin levels, after treatment.
  • - The findings suggest that FJXF enhances the effectiveness of TACE by reducing drug resistance without increasing liver damage risk, indicating a promising treatment approach for PLC.

The pathogenesis of liver fibrosis in nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) remains unclear and the effective treatments have not been explored yet. The activation of hepatic stellate cells (HSCs) is considered as the most critical factor in the progression of liver fibrosis and cirrhosis. Autophagy has recently been identified as a new mechanism to regulate HSC activation.

Pantothenate protects against obesity via brown adipose tissue activation.

Am J Physiol Endocrinol Metab

July 2022

Key Laboratory of Animal Ecology and Conservation Biology, Institute of Zoology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Beijing, China.

Brown adipose tissue (BAT) is the primary site of adaptive thermogenesis, which is involved in energy expenditure and has received much attention in the field of obesity treatment. By screening a small-molecule compound library of drugs approved by the Food and Drug Administration, pantothenic acid was identified as being able to significantly upregulate the expression of uncoupling protein 1 (UCP1), a key thermogenic protein found in BAT. Pantothenate (PA) treatment decreased adiposity, reversed hepatic steatosis, and improved glucose homeostasis by increasing energy expenditure in C57BL/6J mice fed a high-fat diet.

Chronic liver disease (CLD) is a leading health problem impacting the quality of life globally. China shares a major global burden of CLD-including alcoholic liver disease, nonalcoholic fatty liver disease/metabolic dysfunction-associated fatty liver disease, and drug-induced liver injury, except for chronic viral hepatitis. Several exogenous toxins or endogenous metabolic insults trigger hepatic pathology toward steatosis, inflammation, and fibrosis, which, if left untreated, may culminate in liver cirrhosis.

Macrophages-based immune-related risk score model for relapse prediction in stage I-III non-small cell lung cancer assessed by multiplex immunofluorescence.

Transl Lung Cancer Res

April 2022

Department of General Internal Medicine, Sun Yat-sen University Cancer Centre, State Key Laboratory of Oncology in South China, Collaborative Innovation Centre for Cancer Medicine, Guangzhou, China.

Article Synopsis
  • Macrophages play a crucial role in the immune response within the tumor microenvironment, but their specific impact on non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) prognosis remains unclear.
  • A study analyzed samples from 681 NSCLC patients using advanced staining techniques to categorize macrophages and their relationship with other immune markers, utilizing machine learning to develop a risk score for predicting disease-free survival.
  • Results showed that higher levels of macrophages, particularly M1 types, were linked to shorter disease-free survival; a newly created immune-related risk score (IRRS) demonstrated good predictive accuracy for cancer recurrence compared to traditional single markers.

Background: Brucellosis is an endemic systemic infectious disease, the most common complication is bone and joint involvement. Sacroiliac joint and spinal joint are the most frequently involved sites in adults, but knee joint infection is rare, and acute infectious knee arthritis complicated by acute osteomyelitis is even extremely uncommon in adults. Here, we report two cases of acute septic knee arthritis complicated by acute osteomyelitis caused by Brucella melitensis (B.

Although extensive use of antiretroviral therapy (ART) has made great progress in controlling HIV replication and improving CD4 T cell recovery, the immune reconstitution remained insufficient in some patients, who were defined as poor immunological responders (PIRs). These PIRs were at a high risk of AIDS-related and non-AIDS complications, resulting in higher morbidity and mortality rate. Thus, it is a major challenge and urgently needed to distinguish PIRs early and improve their immune function in time.
