Icariin ameliorates behavioral deficits and neuropathology in a mouse model of multiple sclerosis.

Brain Res

April 2023

Department of Pharmacy, Xuanwu Hospital of Capital Medical University, Beijing Engineering Research Center for Nervous System Drugs, Beijing 100053, China; Phase I Clinical Trial Unit, Beijing Ditan Hospital Capital Medical University, Beijing 100015, China. Electronic address:

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a systemic inflammatory illness of the central nervous system that involves demyelinating lesions in the myelin-rich white matter and pathology in the grey matter. Despite significant advancements in drug research for MS, the disease's complex pathophysiology makes it difficult to treat the progressive forms of the disease. In this study, we identified a natural flavonoid compound icariin (ICA) as a potent effective agent for MS in ameliorating the deterioration of symptoms including the neurological deficit score and the body weight in a murine experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE) model.

Background: A growing number of investigations have suggested a close link between cancer stem cells (CSCs), epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EMT), and the tumor microenvironment (TME). However, the relationships between these physiological processes in bladder urothelial carcinoma (BLCA) remain unclear.

Methods: We first explored biomarkers of tumor stemness (TS) by single-cell sequencing analysis.

Department of Hepatology Division 2, Beijing Ditan Hospital, Capital Medical University, Beijing, China.

In order to develop immune tolerant to the fetal, maternal immune system will have some modification comparing to the time before pregnancy. Immune tolerance starts and develops at the maternal placental interface. In innate immunity, decidual natural killer (dNK) cells, macrophages and dendritic cells play a key role in immue tolerance.

State Key Laboratory of Organ Failure Research, Guangdong Provincial Key Laboratory of Viral Hepatitis Research, Department of Infectious Diseases, Nanfang Hospital, Southern Medical University, Guangzhou, China.

Data on the dynamic changes in chronic hepatitis B (CHB) patients with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) during antiviral therapy are scarce. We aimed to investigate the evolution of NAFLD status change in CHB patients treated with nucleos(t)ide analogues (NAs) and its influence on therapeutic outcomes. This retrospective study included 164 HBeAg-positive CHB patients from a randomized controlled trial who were treated with NAs for 104 weeks and underwent paired liver biopsies.

Mitochondrial pyruvate carrier 1 regulates fatty acid synthase lactylation and mediates treatment of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease.

Hepatology

December 2023

Key Laboratory of Precision Nutrition and Food Quality, Key Laboratory of Functional Dairy, Ministry of Education, College of Food Science and Nutritional Engineering, China Agricultural University, Beijing, China.

Article Synopsis
  • NAFLD (Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease) is a significant global metabolic disorder, with limited research on the role of mitochondrial pyruvate carrier 1 (MPC1) in liver lipid metabolism and disease progression.
  • A study measuring MPC1 expression in liver tissues found that higher levels correspond to increased liver lipid deposits in NAFLD patients, while MPC1-deficient mice showed reduced lipid accumulation but unchanged lipid synthesis gene expression.
  • The investigation revealed that lactylation of fatty acid synthase is regulated by MPC1 and affects its activity, thus influencing liver lipid accumulation and inflammation management in the context of NAFLD.
