Scand J Gastroenterol

December 2023

Department of General Medicine, Beijing Ditan Hospital, Capital Medical University, Beijing, China.

Background: The present study aimed to develop and validate a new nomogram for predicting the incidence of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) among chronic hepatitis B (CHB) patients receiving antiviral therapy from real-world data.

Methods: The nomogram was established based on a real-world retrospective study of 764 patients with HBV from October 2008 to July 2020. A predictive model for the incidence of HCC was developed by multivariable Cox regression, and a nomogram was constructed.

Severe anemia is associated with increased short-term and long-term mortality in patients hospitalized with cirrhosis.

Ann Hepatol

May 2024

State Key Laboratory for Diagnosis and Treatment of Infectious Diseases, Collaborative Innovation Center for Diagnosis and Treatment of Infectious Disease, The First Affiliated Hospital, Zhejiang University School of Medicine, Hangzhou, China. Electronic address:

Article Synopsis
  • - The study aimed to explore how common anemia is in patients with cirrhosis experiencing acute decompensation or liver injury and its impact on patient outcomes.
  • - Out of 1,979 patients analyzed, 70.2% were found to have anemia, with varying severities, and a significant link was established between lower hemoglobin levels and higher mortality risks over 90 days and 1 year.
  • - The findings highlighted that severe anemia is a strong predictor of worse survival rates after 28 days, indicating the need for monitoring and management in these patients.

Sepsis induces non-classic innate immune memory in granulocytes.

Cell Rep

September 2023

Biomedical Innovation Center, Beijing Shijitan Hospital, Capital Medical University, Beijing 100038, China; Beijing Key Laboratory for Therapeutic Cancer Vaccines, Beijing 100038, China. Electronic address:

Secondary infection in patients with sepsis triggers a new wave of inflammatory response, which aggravates organ injury and increases mortality. Trained immunity boosts a potent and nonspecific response to the secondary challenge and has been considered beneficial for the host. Here, using a murine model of polymicrobial infection, we find that the primary infection reprograms granulocytes to boost enhanced inflammatory responses to the secondary infection, including the excessive production of inflammatory cytokines, respiratory burst, and augmented phagocytosis capacity.

Many of the currently available COVID-19 vaccines and therapeutics are not effective against newly emerged SARS-CoV-2 variants. Here, we developed the metallo-enzyme domain of angiotensin converting enzyme 2 (ACE2)-the cellular receptor of SARS-CoV-2-into an IgM-like inhalable molecule (HH-120). HH-120 binds to the SARS-CoV-2 Spike (S) protein with high avidity and confers potent and broad-spectrum neutralization activity against all known SARS-CoV-2 variants of concern.

Gut microbiota in alcohol-related liver disease: pathophysiology and gut-brain cross talk.

Front Pharmacol

August 2023

Center of Liver Diseases Division 3, Beijing Ditan Hospital, Capital Medical University, Beijing, China.

Alcohol-related liver disease (ALD) from excessive alcohol intake has a unique gut microbiota profile. The disease progression-free survival in ALD patients has been associated with the degree of gut dysbiosis. The vicious cycles between gut dysbiosis and the disease progression in ALD including: an increase of acetaldehyde production and bile acid secretion, impaired gut barrier, enrichment of circulating microbiota, toxicities of microbiota metabolites, a cascade of pro-inflammatory chemokines or cytokines, and augmentation in the generation of reactive oxygen species.

Objectives: Long-term treatment with nucleoside analog (NA) reduces the risks for decompensation and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) in chronic hepatitis B (CHB) patients with compensated cirrhosis (CC). However, whether antiviral therapy has differential efficacy on the risks for decompensation and HCC is insufficiently elucidated. Therefore, we investigated the disease state transition, focusing on decompensation event-specific HCC risk in NA-treated CHB patients with CC.

T2-weighted imaging and dynamic contrast‑enhanced imaging in predicting the prognosis in patients with acute-on-chronic liver failure.

BMC Gastroenterol

August 2023

Department of Radiology, Beijing Ditan Hospital, Capital Medical University, No. 8 Jingshun East Street, Chaoyang District, Beijing, China.

Background: Acute-on-chronic liver failure (ACLF) is a syndrome with high 28- and 90-day mortality rates. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has been widely used to diagnose and evaluate liver disease. Our purpose is to determine the value of the imaging features derived from Gd-DTPA-enhanced MRI for predicting the poor outcome of patients with ACLF and develop a clinically practical radiological score.

To analyze the occurrence of recompensation conditions in patients with chronic hepatitis B virus-related decompensated cirrhosis after entecavir antiviral therapy. Patients with hepatitis B virus-related decompensated cirrhosis with ascites as the initial manifestation were prospectively enrolled. Patients who received entecavir treatment for 120 weeks and were followed up every 24 weeks (including clinical endpoint events, hematological and imaging indicators, and others) were calculated for recompensation rates according to the Baveno VII criteria.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study investigated the relationship between high-normal serum uric acid (SUA) levels (between 360 and 420 μmol/L) and the occurrence of macrovascular and renal complications in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) over a 10-year period.
  • - Among 2988 T2DM patients, those with high-normal SUA experienced a higher rate of cardiovascular and peripheral vascular events compared to those with low-normal SUA (below 360 μmol/L), indicating a significant risk correlation.
  • - The findings suggest that a SUA threshold of 360 μmol/L is more effective for predicting the risk of macrovascular events in T2DM patients than the previously used limit of 420 μmol/L.*

Over 3 years, humans have experienced multiple rounds of global transmission of SARS-CoV-2 and its variants. In addition, the widely used vaccines against SARS-CoV-2 involve multiple strategies of development and inoculation. Thus, the acquired immunity established among humans is complicated, and there is a lack of understanding within a panoramic vision.

Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 infection is usually self-limited, with a short duration for viral shedding within several weeks. However, prolonged viral shedding has been observed in severe or immune-compromised coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) cases. Here, we reported that three young adult cases of COVID-19 patients, who were either immunosuppressed nor severe, showed prolonged viral RNA shedding from the upper respiratory tract for 58, 81, and 137 days since initial diagnosis.

The humoral immune response and safety of the fourth dose of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) vaccine in solid organ transplant (SOT) recipients need to be fully elucidated. We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to assess the efficacy and safety associated with this additional dose of the COVID-19 vaccine in the SOT recipients. A comprehensive search was conducted to identify studies on SOT patients without prior natural SARS-CoV-2 infection who received the fourth dose of the COVID-19 vaccine.
