There are limited reports on the relationship between spirituality and mental stress in PLWH in China, who may be subject to anti-religious pressures from the government. In this study, we aimed to understand whether spirituality influences Chinese PLWH's mental stress and, if so, at what level. We recruited 200 PLWHs from Beijing's Ditan Hospital to complete a cross-sectional survey inquiring about their practice of spirituality as well as their level of mental stress.

Gamma oscillations in the mPFC: A potential predictive biomarker of depression and antidepressant effects.

Prog Neuropsychopharmacol Biol Psychiatry

February 2024

Beijing Institute of Pharmacology and Toxicology, State Key Laboratory of Toxicology and Medical Countermeasures, Beijing Key Laboratory of Neuropsychopharmacology, Beijing, China; Beijing Institute of Basic Medical Sciences, Beijing, China. Electronic address:

Gamma oscillations have attracted much attention in the field of mood disorders, but their role in depression remains poorly understood. This study aimed to investigate whether gamma oscillations in the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) could serve as a predictive biomarker of depression. Chronic restraint stress (CRS) or lipopolysaccharide (LPS) were used to induce depression-like behaviors in mice; local field potentials (LFPs) in the mPFC were recorded by electrophysiological techniques; We found that both CRS and LPS induced significant depression-like behaviors in mice, including increasing immobility durations in the forced swimming test (FST) and tail suspension test (TST) and increasing the latency to feed in the novelty-suppressed feeding test (NSFT).

Risk management and control of airborne transmission in hospitals is crucial in response to a respiratory virus pandemic. However, the formulation of these infection control measures is often based on epidemiological investigations, which are an indirect way of analyzing the transmission route of viruses. This can lead to careless omissions in infection prevention and control or excessively restrictive measures that increase the burden on healthcare workers.

Carvedilol Plus NUC for Patients With HBV-Compensated Cirrhosis Under Virological Suppression: A Randomized Open-Label Trial.

Am J Gastroenterol

April 2024

Liver Research Center, Beijing Friendship Hospital, Capital Medical University, Beijing Key Laboratory of Translational Medicine on Liver Cirrhosis, National Clinical Research Center for Digestive Diseases, Beijing, China.

Introduction: Portal hypertension progression can be relieved after controlling the etiology of liver cirrhosis. Whether beta-blockers could additionally enhance the effects during treatment, particularly for small esophageal varices (EV), was unclear. This study aims to assess the efficacy of add-on carvedilol to delay EV progression during anti-hepatitis B virus (HBV) treatment in HBV-related cirrhosis.

Baicalin (BA) is a natural product extract with anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and hepatoprotective properties. Given that the exact underlying mechanisms responsible for the impact of BA on liver cirrhosis remain ambiguous, a detailed investigation is sorely needed. Accordingly, a rat liver cirrhosis model was established via the intraperitoneal injection of diethyl nitrosamine (DEN, 100 mg/kg).

Introduction: Due to the sexual orientation and HIV diagnosis, young and middle-aged men who have sex with men (MSM) with new HIV-diagnosis may experience more depressive syndromes and face greater psychological stress. The study explored trajectories of depressive symptoms of young and middle-aged MSM within 1 year after new HIV-diagnosis and analyze the related factors.

Methods: From January 2021 to March 2021, 372 young and middle-aged MSM who were newly diagnosed as HIV-infection were recruited in two hospitals in Beijing.

Characteristics and survival of patients with gynecological cancers who refuse radiotherapy: a retrospective cohort study.

BMC Womens Health

November 2023

Department of Gynecology, Beijing Ditan Hospital, Capital Medical University, No.8 Jingshun East Street, Chaoyang District, Beijing, 100200, China.

Background: Radiotherapy improves survival for many cancer patients. However, some patients still refuse radiotherapy despite the recommendations of their physicians. We aimed to investigate the impact of refusing recommended radiotherapy on overall survival in patients with gynecological cancers (GC) and attempted to describe what characteristics are associated with the refusal of radiotherapy.

Zinc finger protein 281 (ZNF281) has been shown to promote tumor progression. However, the underlying mechanism remains to be further elucidated. In this study, ZNF281 knockdown increased the expression of mitochondrial transcription factor A (TFAM) in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) cells, accompanied with increment of mitochondrial content, oxygen consumption rate (OCR) and levels of TCA cycle intermetabolites.

Article Synopsis
  • The intestinal epithelial barrier is crucial in the progression of HIV disease, but its damage in different patient groups is not well understood.
  • A study compared intestinal damage and related markers among immunological responders (IRs), immunological non-responders (INRs), and healthy controls.
  • It found that both IRs and INRs had persistent intestinal damage, with INRs showing more severe damage, which was linked to higher HIV DNA levels and lower CD4 T cell counts.
