You-Wei Li, Department of Radiology, Beijing Chuiyangliu Hospital Affiliated to School of Medicine, Tsinghua University, Beijing 100022, China.

Aim: To prepare the specific magnetic resonance (MR) probes for detection of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) using one-pot method.

Methods: The carboxylated dextran-coated nanoparticles were conjugated with anti-α-fetoprotein (anti-AFP) or anti-glypican 3 (anti-GPC3) antibodies through 1-(3-dimethylaminopropyl)-3-ethylcarbodiimide hydrochloride/N-hydroxysuccinimide (EDC/NHS)-mediated reaction to synthesize the probes. The physical and chemical properties of the probes were determined by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and dynamic light scattering, and the relaxivity was compared to uncombined ultrasmall superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (USPIONs) using a 1.

Aims: Our aim was to analyse the utility of the algorithm combining PAX8 with clinicopathological characteristics (tumour size, laterality and patient age) in differentiating primary ovarian mucinous tumours (POMTs) from extragenital metastatic mucinous carcinomas involving the ovary (eMOMCs).

Methods And Results: Immunohistochemical staining for PAX8 was performed on formalin fixed, paraffin embedded tissues from 47 POMTs, 18 eMOMCs and 70 extragenital primary mucinous carcinomas (ePMCs) using anti-PAX8 rabbit polyclonal antibody (pAb) and anti-PAX8 rabbit monoclonal antibody (mAb). PAX8 (pAb) positive signals were found in 3/18 eMOMCs and in 32/70 ePMCs.

NaDC3 Induces Premature Cellular Senescence by Promoting Transport of Krebs Cycle Intermediates, Increasing NADH, and Exacerbating Oxidative Damage.

January 2016

Department of Nephrology, Chinese PLA General Hospital, Chinese PLA Institute of Nephrology, State Key Laboratory of Kidney Diseases, National Clinical Research Center for Kidney Diseases, Beijing, China.

High-affinity sodium-dependent dicarboxylate cotransporter 3 (NaDC3) is a key metabolism-regulating membrane protein responsible for transport of Krebs cycle intermediates. NaDC3 is upregulated as organs age, but knowledge regarding the underlying mechanisms by which NaDC3 modulates mammalian aging is limited. In this study, we showed that NaDC3 overexpression accelerated cellular senescence in young human diploid cells (MRC-5 and WI-38) and primary renal tubular cells, leading to cell cycle arrest in G1 phase and increased expression of senescent biomarkers, senescence-associated β-galactosidase and p16.

October 2013

Sheng-Jun Jiang, Gyanendra Swar, Hai-Xia Wang, Xiao-Jing Liu, Yong-Guang Wang, Department of Minimally Invasive Surgery, Beijing Chuiyangliu Hospital, Beijing 100022, China.

Aim: To investigate the feasibility and safety of Natural orifice trans-umbilical endoscopic cholecystectomy with a water-jet hybrid-knife in a non-survival porcine model.

Methods: Pure natural orifice transluminal endoscopic surgery (NOTES) cholecystectomy was performed on three non-survival pigs, by transumbilical approach, using a water-jet hybrid-knife. Under general anesthesia, the following steps detailed the procedure: (1) incision of the umbilicus followed by the passage of a double-channel flexible endoscope through an overtube into the peritoneal cavity; (2) establishment of pneumoperitoneum; (3) abdominal exploration; (4) endoscopic cholecystectomy: dissection of the gallbladder performed using water jet equipment, ligation of the cystic artery and duct conducted using nylon loops; and (5) necropsy with macroscopic evaluation.

The objective of this study is to observe the effect of percutaneous laser disc decompression (PLDD) on lumbar spinal stenosis (LSS). Thirty-two LSS patients were treated using pulsed Nd: YAG laser, of which 21 cases (11 males and 10 females with an average age of 64 years old) were followed up for 2 years. All of the 21 patients had intermittent claudication with negative straight leg raising test results.

Background Context: Either an anterior approach or a posterior approach, which aims to decompress the spinal cord and restore the sagittal alignment, has been adopted to treat multilevel cervical degenerative myelopathy (CDM) associated with kyphosis. However, there is controversy on the optimal surgical strategy for the treatment of multilevel CDM with kyphotic deformity because of the complications of each surgical approach.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the surgical efficacy of enlarged laminectomy (removing the inside edge of facet joints and decompressing the nerve foramina) and lateral mass screw fixation for the treatment of multilevel CDM associated with kyphosis.

Objective: The purpose of this study was to observe the midterm follow-up findings of the change in imaging manifestation after percutaneous laser disc decompression (PLDD), and to evaluate the safety and efficacy of this operation.

Materials And Methods: A retrospective review of the imaging manifestation of the 22 patients with cervical and lumbar vertebra disease who were treated by PLDD was analyzed.

Results: There was no significant difference in the anterior, middle, and posterior height of the intervertebral spaces of pathological discs before and after operation in the last follow-up (p>0.

Objective: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of percutaneous laser disc decompression (PLDD) in the treatment of lumbar disc herniation (LDH) and identify the relationship between PLDD efficacy and age.

Background Data: Many articles have shown that the short-term clinical outcome of PLDD was fairly good. However, the continuous follow-up results over 3 years of PLDD for LDH treatment are rarely reported, and little is known about the relationship between PLDD efficacy and age.

Background: Brugada syndrome and congenital long-QT syndrome (LQTS) type 3 (LQT3) are 2 inherited conditions of abnormal cardiac excitability characterized clinically by an increased risk of ventricular tachyarrhythmias. SCN5A gene that encodes the cardiac sodium channel α subunit is responsible for the 2 diseases, and more work is needed to improve correlations between SCN5A genotypes and associated clinical syndromes.

Methods And Results: Four patients diagnosed as having Brugada syndrome, 9 patients suspected to have Brugada syndrome, and 3 LQTS patients suspected to be LQT3 without mutations in KCNQ1 and HERG participated in the study.
