Multiple myeloma (MM) is an incurable malignancy of mature B-lymphoid cells, and its pathogenesis is only partially understood. Previous studies have demonstrated that a number of Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma (NHL) associated genes also show susceptibility to MM, suggesting malignancies originating from B cells may share similar genetic susceptibility. Several recent large-scale genome-wide association studies (GWAS) have identified HLA-I, HLA-II, CXCR5, ETS1, LPP and NCOA1 genes as genetic risk factors associated with NHL, and this study aimed to investigate whether these genes polymorphisms confer susceptibility with MM in the Chinese Han population.

Background: Given both lipoprotein (Lp)(a) and vitamin D have been found to be associated with coronary heart disease (CHD) risk and a biochemical link between vitamin D and cholesterol on atherosclerosis has been proposed, we hypothesised there could exist an interaction between Lp(a) and vitamin D on the severity of CHD.
Methods: Lp(a) and 25-OH vitamin D were measured in the plasma of 348 consecutive patients (mean age 62.4±10.

Background And Objectives: It is recognized that orthodontic force (OF) has an aggravating effect on the progression of destructive periodontitis if periodontitis have not been well controlled. However, the underlying mechanism is not completely clear. This study was to investigate the effect of antibiotic administration on OF-aggravated, ligature-induced experimental periodontitis in mice.

Background: Pancreatic cancer (PaCa) is the most lethal gastrointestinal (GI) tumor. Although many studies on differentially expressed miRNAs as candidate biomarkers of pancreatic cancer have been published, reliability of these findings generated from investigations performed in single laboratory settings remain unclear.
Results: There were 29 articles with a total of 2,225 patients and 1,618 controls included in this meta-analysis.

Protein translational machinery is an important component of the proteostasis network that maintains cellular proteostasis and regulates aging and other cellular processes. Ample evidence indicates that inhibition of translation initiation factor activities enhances stress resistance in model organisms. Eukaryotic translation initiation factor 5B (eIF5B) acts by joining the pre-40S subunit with the 60S ribosomal unit to form an 80S-like complex during protein translational initiation.

Interleukin-10 (IL-10)-producing B cells (B10 cells) play a critical role in the immune system balance by negatively regulating inflammatory responses. This study was conducted to determine the effect of local B10 cell induction on periodontal inflammation and bone loss in ligature-induced experimental periodontitis in vivo Purified spleen B cells from C57BL/6J mice (8 to 10 weeks old) were cultured with CD40 ligand (CD40L) and the Toll-like receptor 9 (TLR9) agonist cytidine-phosphate-guanosine oligodeoxynucleotide (CpG) to determine effective IL-10 induction in vitro Silk ligatures (size 7-0) were tied around the mouse maxillary second molars on day 0, followed by the injection of CD40L and CpG into the palatal gingiva on days 3, 6, and 9. All the mice were sacrificed, and samples were collected on day 14.

This systematic review and meta-analysis was performed to compare the efficacy and safety of uterine artery embolization (UAE) followed by curettage and methotrexate (MTX) plus curettage in the treatment of cesarean scar pregnancy (CSP) in China. Studies published in PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, SinoMed (Chinese BioMedical Literature Service System), and China National Knowledge Information were systematically searched. The main outcome measures included the time for serum β-human chorionic gonadotropin (β-hCG) normalization, the duration of hospital stay, blood losses, and adverse events.

Isoform 1 of uracil-DNA glycosylase (UNG1) is the major protein for initiating base-excision repair in mitochondria and is in close proximity to the respiratory chain that generates reactive oxygen species (ROS). Effects of ROS on the stability of UNG1 have not been well characterized. In the present study, we found that overexpression of UNG1 enhanced cells' resistance to oxidative stress and protected mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) from oxidation.

Given both smoking and vitamin D are associated with coronary heart disease (CHD) via inflammation and smoking may interfere with the local antiinflammatory effects of vitamin D. We hypothesized that the relationship between smoking and severity of CHD may be modified by vitamin D.A cross-sectional study was conducted.

Background: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of a single high dose of the anti-T-lymphocyte globulin Fresenius (ATG-F), given before kidney transplantation, on the prevention of acute rejection response and infections and on the survival rate of the renal graft and patient.
Methods: Databases including PubMed, Embase, and the Cochrane Library were searched to identify randomized controlled trials relevant to studying the presurgical use of a single high dose of ATG-F.
Results: Five RCTs that included 346 patients were selected.

Objective: To investigate the expression of Programmed death-1 (PD-1) on T lymphocytes in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and severe sepsis, we determined PD-1 expression on CD4+ and CD8+ T lymphocytes of patients with T2DM, severe sepsis, and T2DM combined with severe sepsis.
Research Design And Methods: This prospective and observational study included 50 healthy controls, 80 cases of T2DM without infection (T2DM group), 88 cases of severe sepsis without T2DM (SS group), and 77 cases of severe sepsis combined with T2DM (SS+T2DM group). Expression of peripheral blood PD-1+ CD4+ T cells and PD-1+ CD8+ T cells were compared between these 4 groups.
Background: Studies on the association between body mass index (BMI) and death risk among patients with hypertension are limited, and the results are inconsistent. We investigated the association between BMI and cardiovascular disease (CVD) and all-cause mortality among hypertensive patients in a population of Beijing, China.
Methods: We conducted a prospective cohort study of 2535 patients with hypertension aged 40 to 91 years from Beijing, China.

Objective: To study the structural relationship between annexin A4 and the Lewis y antigen and compare their expression and significance in ovarian clear cell carcinoma, and to explore how annexin A4 fucose glycosylation effects the interaction between annexin A4 and NF-kB p50, and how it promotes tumour progression of ovarian clear cell carcinoma.
Methods: Structural relationships between annexin A4 and Lewis y antigen were detected using immunoprecipitation. Annexin A4 and Lewis y antigen expression in various subtypes of ovarian cancer tissues was detected by immunohistochemistry, and the relation between their expression was examined.

Cisplatin and other platinum-based drugs have been widely used in the treatment of ovarian cancer, but most patients acquire the drug resistance that greatly compromises the efficacy of drugs. Understanding the mechanism of drug resistance is important for finding new therapeutic approaches. In the present study, we found that the expression of vimentin was downregulated in drug-resistant ovarian cancer cell lines A2780-DR and HO-8910 as compared to their respective control cells.

BACKGROUND Recently, several combined therapeutic strategies and targeted agents have been under investigation for their potential role in lung cancer. The combined administration of dendritic cells (DCs) and immune-adjuvant cytidyl guanosyl oligodeoxynucleotide (CpG-ODN) after cryosurgery has proven to be an effective strategy for treating lung cancer. However, whether the application of CpG-ODN could affect the therapeutic results remained to be further explored.

Increased urinary albumin excretion in diabetes not only signals nephropathy but also serves as a risk marker for cardiovascular disease. The data of MARCH (Metformin and AcaRbose in Chinese as the initial Hypoglycaemic treatment) trial demonstrated that acarbose and metformin were similarly efficacious at lowering blood glucose and blood pressure, as well as improving insulin sensitivity in Chinese patients newly diagnosed with type 2 diabetes mellitus. The purpose of this study was to identify the effects of acarbose and metformin therapy on albumin excretion in MARCH study.
