Objective: To evaluate the association of periodontal health and parameters of quality of life assessed in 306 Chinese patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).
Methods: Periodontal status and respiratory function in 306 COPD patients were clinically evaluated and their quality of life was assessed using the standardized St George's Respiratory Questionnaire (SGRQ).
Results: The SGRQ scores were all significantly correlated with major lung function parameters (r(2) = -0.

Objective: To determine the prevalence of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) in patients with idiopathic pulmonary interstitial fibrosis (IPIF).
Methods: From December 2006 to January 2008, 24 consecutive patients with IPIF admitted to Beijing Chaoyang Hospital underwent 24-hour esophageal pH monitoring and esophageal manometry. Meanwhile, 23 patients with diffuse parenchymal lung disease (DPLD) (excluding IPIF) admitted to the hospital in the same period served as a control group.

Objective: To explore the association between the erythrocyte sedimentation rate, serum C-reactive protein (CRP) and the risk of lung cancer.
Methods: One hundred and three patients with newly diagnosed lung cancer and 85 homochronous hospitalized patients with chronic respiratory diseases (including chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, asthma, bronchiectasis and pulmonary fibrosis) were included in this study. ESR, serum levels of CRP, CEA, CA19-9 and CA125 were analyzed in the two groups before the initiation of any therapy after hospitalization.

Objective: To observe the airway inflammation and peripheral airway function in asthmatic patients with different control levels, and to investigate whether the airway inflammation profile detected by induced sputum reflects the peripheral airway dysfunction.
Methods: The recruited asthmatic subjects (n = 66) were divided into 3 groups: asthma controlled (8 male and 13 female), asthma partly controlled (12 male and 16 female), asthma uncontrolled (6 male and 11 female). Twenty healthy subjects served as the control group (9 male and 11 female).

Objective: To improve clinicians' ability of diagnosing testicular torsion.
Methods: We reviewed the data of a case of testicular torsion that resulted in necrosis because of delayed presentation and repeated misdiagnosis, and analyzed its anatomic features, clinical manifestations, ultrasound results, the causes of misdiagnosis and relevant literature.
Results: The patient presented 5 hours after the onset of symptoms, complaining of severe paroxysmal pain in the lower left abdomen, accompanied with nausea and vomiting, and was twice misdiagnosed as having enterospasm or ureteral calculus at two different hospitals.

Pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) is a severe clinical and pathophysiologic syndrome with no effective treatment at present. Mycophenolate mofetil (MMF), a prodrug of mycophenolic acid (MPA), has been applied widely to the treatment of connective tissue diseases with the effect of immunosuppressant. Pancreatic pseudocysts (PPs) are collections of pancreatic secretions that are lined by fibrous tissues and may contain necrotic debris or blood. The interventions including percutaneous, endoscopic or surgical approaches are based on the size, location, symptoms and complications of a pseudocyst. With the availability of advanced imaging systems and cameras, better hemostatic equipments and excellent laparoscopic techniques, most pseudocysts can be found and managed by laparoscopy.

Objective: To evaluate the expression of tissue factor (TF), urokinase-type plasminogen activator (uPA), and urokinase-type plasminogen activator receptor (uPAR) in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) tissues and to find their roles in lymph node metastasis, vascular involvement and prognosis.
Methods: Immunohistochemistry was used to examine the expression of TF, uPA, and uPAR in the tumor tissues of 97 NSCLC patients obtained during operation and 40 samples of normal lung tissues at least 5 cm away from the tumor tissues. The correlations of expression of TF, uPA, and uPAR with the clinicopathologic parameters were analyzed by chi2 test.
