Serum and cerebrospinal fluid tau protein level as biomarkers for evaluating acute spinal cord injury severity and motor function outcome.

Neural Regen Res

May 2019

Key Laboratory of Biorheological Science and Technology, Ministry of Education (Chongqing University), Chongqing University Cancer Hospital, Chongqing, China.

Tau protein, a microtubule-associated protein, has a high specific expression in neurons and axons. Because traumatic spinal cord injury mainly affects neurons and axons, we speculated that tau protein may be a promising biomarker to reflect the degree of spinal cord injury and prognosis of motor function. In this study, 160 female Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly divided into a sham group, and mild, moderate, and severe spinal cord injury groups.

MicroRNA-153 affects nasopharyngeal cancer cell viability by targeting TGF-β.

Oncol Lett

January 2019

Department of Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery, Beijing Army General Hospital, Beijing 100700, P.R. China.

The aim of the present study was to determine the function of microRNA-153 (miR-153) in the viability of nasopharyngeal cancer (NPC) cells and determine the underlying molecular mechanism. The expression of miR-153 in patients with NPC was markedly decreased compared with that in paracarcinoma tissue. miR-153 upregulation observably decreased cell viability, induced apoptosis, increased caspase-3 and -9 activity, and increased the B-cell lymphoma 2 (Bcl-2)-associated X protein/Bcl-2 protein expression ratio in 13-9B cells.

Hip fractures are one of the most common injuries in elderly individuals and are associated with a high incidence of complications and mortality. Clinical guidelines recommend early reparative surgery within 24-48 h from hospital admission; however, it is currently unknown whether this principle of early surgery is applicable for patients with hip fracture and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). To investigate the systemic inflammatory response and lung injury as a result early surgery in elderly patients with hip fracture and COPD, a COPD model was created, by daily exposure to cigarette smoke, and evaluated.

Radiographic outcomes of single versus dual plate fixation of acute mid-shaft clavicle fractures.

Arch Orthop Trauma Surg

June 2017

Department of Orthopedic Surgery, Mayo Clinic, 200 1st St. SW, Rochester, MN, 55905, USA.

Introduction: The clavicle exhibits considerable movement in three planes making rigid fixation challenging. The addition of a second plate may be considered to improve fixation rigidity, but risks compromising the blood supply to the fracture site. The purpose of this study is to assess if extraperiosteal dual plate fixation increases the rate of non-union, reoperation, and complications at 1 year for surgically treated acute mid-shaft clavicle fractures.

Introduction: Hip fracture in the elderly can induce systemic inflammatory response (SIRS) and lung injury which increases the risk of lung infection and death. Mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) plays a role in SIRS and lung injury in patients with multi-trauma, and also in patients with hip fractures. This study evaluated the potential value of plasma mtDNA in the early prognosis of lung injury in elderly fracture patients.

In this study, we sought to investigate the expression of microRNA (miR)-214 on the osteogenic differentiation of bone marrow‑derived mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs) and explore the possible underlying mechanisms. We found that the overexpression of miR‑214 effectively promoted the adipocyte differentiation of BMSCs in vitro, reduced alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity and the gene expression of collagen type I (Col I), osteocalcin (OCN) and osteopontin (OPN) in the BMSCs. We further found that the overexpression of miR‑214 suppressed the protein expression of fibroblast growth factor (FGF), phosphorylated c‑Jun N-terminal kinase (p-JNK) and phosphorylated p38 (p-p38) in the BMSCs.

Extraperiosteal Dual Plate Fixation of Acute Mid-Shaft Clavicle Fractures: A Technical Trick.

J Orthop Trauma

October 2016

*Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, Mayo Clinic, Rochester, MN; †Institute of Orthopaedics, Chinese PLA, Beijing Army General Hospital, Beijing, China; and ‡The Rothman Institute at Thomas Jefferson University, Philadelphia, PA.

Historically, surgical treatment of acute mid-shaft clavicle fractures has excellent outcomes with low rates of nonunion. More complex fracture patterns with significant comminution may limit the fixation that can be obtained with a single plate. The authors describe the surgical technique and case series of patients treated with extraperiosteal dual plating for acute mid-shaft clavicle fractures.

Fracture initiates systemic inflammatory response syndrome through recruiting polymorphonuclear leucocytes.

Immunol Res

August 2016

Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, Beijing Army General Hospital, Nanmencang No. 5, Dongcheng District, Beijing, 100700, China.

Fracture, a common type injury in trauma patients, often results in the development of the systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS). Though the mechanism of the fracture-initiated SIRS still remains not well characterized, it is well documented that the polymorphonuclear leucocytes (PMN) play an important role in the inflammatory process. We hypothesize that fractures recruit PMN to the local tissue, which is followed by an increase in the number of peripheral PMN and initiation of SIRS.

Balloon kyphoplasty versus percutaneous vertebroplasty for treatment of osteoporotic vertebral compression fractures (OVCFs).

Osteoporos Int

September 2016

Department of Orthopedics, the Beijing Army General Hospital, No. 5, Nanmengcang Lane, Beijing, 100700, People's Republic of China.

Unlabelled: The study investigated whether kyphoplasty (KP) was superior to vertebroplasty (VP) in treating patients with osteoporotic vertebral compression fractures (OVCFs). KP may be superior to VP for treating patients with OVCFs based on long-term VAS and ODI but not short-term VAS. Further large-scale trials are needed to verify these findings due to potential risk of selection bias.

PLoS One

June 2016

Biomechanics Laboratory, Division of Orthopedic Research, Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minnesota, United States of America.

Introduction: An increased bone mineral density (BMD) in the proximity to tendon insertion can improve rotator cuff repair and healing. However, how a decrease of BMD in the humeral head affects the biomechanical properties of the rotator cuff tendon is still unclear. Previous studies have demonstrated ovariectomy in animals to lead to osteoporosis and decreased BMD, and Teriparatide (PTH) administration to improve BMD and strength of bone.
