Article Synopsis
  • Keratoconus (KC) is a progressive eye disorder affecting the cornea, with genetic factors influencing its development, as highlighted in a study of monozygotic twins from a Chinese family.
  • Comprehensive eye exams and whole-genome sequencing were conducted to identify clinical features and genetic variants in the twins and their parents, revealing 12 potential pathogenic variants related to KC.
  • The findings suggest that the accumulation of these genetic variants may be responsible for the twins' KC, contributing to a broader understanding of the genetic landscape of

Sci Rep

August 2024

Beijing Key Laboratory of Mobile Computing and Pervasive Device, Institute of Computing Technology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Beijing, China.

Timely and effective diagnosis of fungal keratitis (FK) is necessary for suitable treatment and avoiding irreversible vision loss for patients. In vivo confocal microscopy (IVCM) has been widely adopted to guide the FK diagnosis. We present a deep learning framework for diagnosing fungal keratitis using IVCM images to assist ophthalmologists.

Article Synopsis
  • This study examined choroidal thickness (CT) and blood flow in children aged 8-15 with unilateral myopic anisometropia (UMA), focusing on how these factors relate to ocular growth and myopia progression.
  • Researchers measured various ocular metrics in 98 children, using advanced imaging techniques to categorize choroidal features in different regions of the eye.
  • Findings revealed that myopic eyes exhibited significantly lower CT and blood flow parameters compared to non-myopic eyes, suggesting that these choroidal changes may play a role in the progression of myopia in these children.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to assess the effectiveness of trifocal intraocular lens (IOL) implantation combined with modified femtosecond laser-assisted arcuate keratotomy (FSAK) on visual outcomes and astigmatism correction in Chinese cataract patients with mild astigmatism.
  • Data from 27 eyes of 23 patients were collected and analyzed, showing significant improvements in uncorrected distance visual acuity and a notable reduction in corneal astigmatism at the 3-month follow-up.
  • The results indicate that this surgical approach not only enhances vision quality but also effectively reduces astigmatism in patients, with minimal errors in the corrective procedure.

Relationship between myopia control and amount of corneal refractive change after orthokeratology lens treatment.

BMC Ophthalmol

October 2023

Key Laboratory of Universal Wireless Communications, Ministry of Education, Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications, No. 10 Xitucheng Road, Beijing, 100876, China.

Article Synopsis
  • The study examined how the corneal refractive change (CRC) from wearing orthokeratology (Ortho-K) lenses affects the growth of axial length (AL) in children aged 8-14 who wore the lenses for over a year.
  • After three months of wearing Ortho-K lenses, participants showed significant changes in CRC, and after one year, the AL growth was found to negatively correlate with the area and volume of the CRC region.
  • The findings suggest that the effectiveness of Ortho-K lenses in controlling AL elongation may depend on the characteristics of the CRC region, with different correlations noted based on the severity of myopia among participants.

Purpose: This study aimed to present a novel technique for Descemet membrane endothelial keratoplasty (DMEK) in pseudophakic and vitrectomized eyes.

Methods: The sterile air was injected into the posterior eye segment (anterior vitreous cavity) as a barrier to prevent the fluid of the vitreous cavity flowing into the anterior chamber, levitating the iris-lens diaphragm to flatten the anterior chamber during the surgery. This approach assists in the unfolding of the donor endothelial graft, helping to perform DMEK surgery on patients with a posterior intraocular lens (IOL) and vitrectomy.
