Membrane-assisted direct seawater splitting (DSS) technologies are actively studied as a promising route to produce green hydrogen (H), whereas the indispensable use of supporting electrolytes that help to extract water and provide electrochemically-accelerated reaction media results in a severe energy penalty, consuming up to 12.5 % of energy input when using a typical KOH electrolyte. We bypass this issue by designing a zero-gap electrolyzer configuration based on the integration of cation exchange membrane and bipolar membrane assemblies, which protects stable DSS operation against the precipitates and corrosion in the absence of additional supporting electrolytes.

Study of the spatial strength distribution patterns and microstructure characteristics of ultra-fine tailings cemented paste backfill.

In this study, the spatial distribution of the mechanical strength of ultra-fine tailings cemented paste backfill (UCPB) in underground stopes was examined, and the micro-mechanism responsible for differences in spatial strength performance via changes in particle deposition was elucidated. To better understand this phenomenon, we constructed a similar backfilling stope model using the ultra-fine tailings of a gold mine. We manufactured specimens at different spatial locations and conducted a novel series of tests, including uniaxial compressive strength, shear strength, and conventional triaxial tests, to obtain the strength parameters in different spatial distributions.

In this letter, we investigated the impact of percolation transport mechanisms on ferroelectric field effect transistor (FeFET) multi-value storage with Kinetic Monte-Carlo (KMC) simulation considering aspect ratio and temperature dependencies. It is found that the portion of the ferroelectric polarization, which dominated the threshold voltage shift of the FeFET, increases when aspect ratio of device decreases. Moreover, randomness of percolation path formation and variations of equivalent conductance can be suppressed, indicating mitigation of device-to-device variations and enhancement of separation of individual states.

Component analysis and source identification of atmospheric aerosols at the neighborhood scale in a coastal industrial city in China.

A multiple-site filter-sampling observation study was conducted in a coastal industrial city (Rizhao, 35°10'59″N, 119°23'57″E) to understand the main components, formation mechanisms, and potential sources of particulate matter. The average (±σ) mass concentration of PM across all the sites was 42 (±27) μg/m, with high variability (6-202 μg/m). Water-soluble inorganic ions (WSIIs) were the major contributors (54%-60%) to PM with mean values for sulfate (13 μg/m), nitrate (6 μg/m), and ammonium (7 μg/m) (SNA).
