The tertiary structure of normal podocytes prevents protein from leaking into the urine. However, observing the complexity of podocytes is challenging because of the scale differences in their three-dimensional structure and the close proximity between neighboring cells in space. In this study, we explored podocyte-secreted angiopoietin-like 4 (ANGPTL4) as a potential morphological marker via super-resolution microscopy (SRM).

January 2025

State Key Laboratory of Chemical Resource Engineering, Department of Organic Chemistry, College of Chemistry, Beijing University of Chemical Technology, Beijing 100029, People's Republic of China.

2-Hydroxyl/acetoxy-3-nitroindoles are directly and efficiently prepared in good to excellent yields from diazo(nitro)acetanilides under the catalysis of Cu(MeCN)PF in DCM through an intramolecular aromatic C-H insertion or followed by acetylation. 2-Hydroxyl-3-nitroindoles can be further transformed to 3-halo-3-nitroindolin-2-ones and 3-alkanamidoindolin-2-ones readily. All of them are important synthetic building blocks for construction of indole derivatives.

Ultra-robust Single-Ion Conducting Composite Electrolytes for Stable Li-Metal Batteries.

ACS Appl Mater Interfaces

January 2025

State Key Laboratory of Organic-Inorganic Composites, School of Materials Science and Engineering, Beijing University of Chemical Technology, Beijing 100029, China.

With significantly high lithium-ion (Li) transport efficiency, single-ion conducting polymer electrolytes (SIPEs) often suffer from low ionic conductivity due to the covalently bonded anions to the polymer backbone. Adding plasticizers to SIPEs to improve ionic conductivity usually reduces the polymer matrix's mechanical robustness, negatively affecting overall performance as solid electrolytes. Herein, to surpass such a trade-off relationship, we successfully designed a single-ion conducting composite membrane (c-SIPM60) with cross-linked linear SIPEs and incorporated glass-mesh substrate, which shows a cation transport number close to 1, ultrahigh tensile strength of 22 MPa (modulus of 547.

State Key Laboratory of Organic-Inorganic Composites, Beijing Laboratory of Biomedical Materials, College of Life Science and Technology, Beijing University of Chemical Technology, Beijing 100029, China.

A series of polyurethanes (PU-GT) were prepared using polyglycolide-block-polytetrahydrofuran-block-polyglycolide (PGA-PTHF-PGA), polytetrahydrofuran homopolymer (PTHF), glycerol, and hexamethylene diisocyanate (HDI) by a one-pot synthesis method. The non-isothermal crystallization and subsequent heating curves showed that the PTHF component in these polyurethanes could crystallize in a temperature range of -11.5~2.

In this study, an iridium-catalyzed selective 1,4-reduction of α,β-unsaturated carbonyl compounds is realized, with water as a solvent and formic acid as a hydride donor. The new efficient iridium catalyst features a 2-(4,5-dihydroimidazol-2-yl)quinoline ligand. The chemoselectivity and catalyst efficiency are highly dependent on the electronic and steric properties of the substrates.

By combining molecular dynamics (MD) simulations and density functional theory (DFT), the influence of dye structure on the optical modulation properties of negative-mode guest-host liquid crystal (GHLC) systems was systematically investigated. Firstly, the reliability of the simulation method was validated by comparing the performance parameters of the GHLC system obtained from simulations with those from experimental results. Subsequently, a series of guest dye molecules, along with their mixtures with negative dielectric anisotropy mesogens, were designed and analyzed.

Polysulfide Tandem Conversion for Lithium-Sulfur Batteries.

Small

January 2025

State Key Laboratory of Chemical Resource Engineering, Beijing University of Chemical Technology, Beijing, 100029, P. R. China.

The electrocatalytic conversion of 16-electron multistep polysulfides is crucial for lithium-sulfur batteries, while it is hard to achieve compatibility between intricate sulfur reduction processes and appropriate catalysts. Herein, a tandem conversion strategy is reported to boost multi-step intermediate reactions of polysulfides transformation by designing an electrocatalyst featuring cobalt and zinc sites (Co/Zn), where the Zn serve as sites for the conversion of long-chain lithium polysulfides (LiPSs), promoting the transformation of S to LiS; the Co sites accelerate the kinetics of the subsequent reduction of LiS. This tandem catalysis method not only enhances the conversion of the initial reactants but also provides additional support for the intermediates, thereby facilitating subsequent reactions to maximize capacity.

Heart failure is a common complication in patients with sepsis, and individuals who experience both sepsis and heart failure are at a heightened risk for adverse outcomes. This study aims to develop an effective nomogram model to predict the 7-day, 15-day, and 30-day survival probabilities of septic patients with heart failure in the intensive care unit (ICU). This study extracted the pertinent clinical data of septic patients with heart failure from the Critical Medical Information Mart for Intensive Care (MIMIC-IV) database.

Objective: To explore the effects of acupuncture in comparison with sham acupuncture on cognitive functions in patients with relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis (RRMS).

Methods: In this randomized controlled trial, 31 RRMS patients in the acupuncture group were treated with traditional Chinese acupuncture based on the treatment principle of calming the mind, reinforcing qi and blood, and 31 patients in the control group were treated with sham acupuncture (shallow needling at non-acupuncture points) twice a week for 12 weeks. The primary outcome was the Brief International Cognitive Assessment for Multiple Sclerosis (BICAMS) score, which was evaluated by a psychologist at baseline and after 12 weeks of treatment.

Air pollution carries different disease burdens across all age groups, with the elderly and children being the most affected. Therefore, it is of practical significance to study air pollution exposure characteristics of different age groups in the context of accelerating aging in China. In this study, we used the number of people and air pollutant concentration data at the township-level scale (the smallest administrative unit in China) to calculate population-weighted PM concentration exposure (PM PWE) values of different age groups in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei (BTH) region, quantified the pollution exposure disparities among different groups, and analyzed the spatiotemporal changes in such differences and their driving factors.

The shelf life of 2D MXenes in functional devices and colloidal dispersions is compromised due to oxidation in the aqueous system. Herein, a systematic investigation was carried out to explore the potential of various amino compounds as antioxidants for TiCT MXenes. A range of basic, acidic, and neutral amino acids were examined for their effectiveness, where certain antioxidants failed to protect MXenes from oxidation, while others accelerated their decomposition.
