Polylactic acid (PLA) is a bio-recyclable plastic, but its high flammability limits broader applications. Here, a novel flame retardant (Zn-CHP) is synthesized from chitosan (CH), diethylenetriaminepenta (methylenephosphonic) acid (DTPMP), and ZnCl₂ using a simple, solvent-free process. The Zn-CHP additive is melt-blended with PLA, achieving excellent flame retardancy at just 2 wt% loading.

December 2024

State Key Laboratory of Organic-Inorganic Composites, Beijing Laboratory of Biomedical Materials, Beijing University of Chemical Technology, Beijing, 100029, China.

Background: Electrospun nanofiber scaffolds have been widely used in tissue engineering because they can mimic extracellular matrix-like structures and offer advantages including high porosity, large specific surface area, and customizable structure. In this study, we prepared scaffolds composed of aligned and random electrospun polycaprolactone (PCL) nanofibers capable of delivering basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF) in a sustained manner for repairing damaged tendons.

Results: Aligned and random PCL fiber scaffolds containing bFGF-loaded bovine serum albumin (BSA) nanoparticles (BSA-bFGF NPs, diameter 146 ± 32 nm) were fabricated, respectively.

Enhancing translational medical research through proof-of-concept services: clinicians' perspectives.

Sci Rep

December 2024

Department of Military Medical Services, Faculty of Military Health Services, Naval Medical University, Shanghai, 200433, China.

Although the proof-of-concept (POC) phase is critical for the success of translational medical research (TMR), its use remains limited, and clinicians are frequently uncertain about how to seek assistance from POC teams when experiencing difficulties with TMR. Therefore, this study explored clinicians' awareness of POC and the supportive reference services offered by POC teams. We distributed an internet-based questionnaire to 702 clinicians who conducted TMR between August 2022 and March 2023.

December 2024

Key Laboratory of Resource-Oriented Treatment of Industrial Pollutants, School of Civil and Resource Engineering, University of Science and Technology Beijing, Beijing 100083, China.

This paper investigates the flow performance and mechanical properties of underground gelled filling materials made from potash mine tailings, using lime as a gel. It demonstrates the feasibility of using lime as a gel, potash mine tailings as aggregate, and replacing water with potash mine tailings to create filling materials that meet design requirements for flow and compressive strength. The role of lime in the hardening process is explored through X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, and infrared analysis.

β-Lactam/β-lactamase inhibitors (BL/BLIs) are widely used in critically ill patients. Recent research has shown the importance of therapeutic drug monitoring (TDM) of BLs, but few studies have highlighted the importance of detecting BLIs in critically ill patients. In our laboratory, we have developed and validated a simple and robust method for the determination of ceftazidime, cefoperazone, piperacillin, avibactam, sulbactam and tazobactam in human plasma by ultra-high performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (UPLC-MS/MS).

Org Lett

December 2024

State Key Laboratory of Chemical Resource Engineering, Department of Organic Chemistry, College of Chemistry, Beijing University of Chemical Technology, Beijing 100029, People's Republic of China.

The cascade reaction of 3-diazo-2-sulfonyliminoindolines and -methoxymethyl--[(trimethylsilyl)methyl]benzylamines generates 2-sulfonylimino-1',3',4',6'-tetrahydro-2'-spiro[indoline-3,5'-pyrimidine] and spiro[indoline-3,3'-pyrrolidine] derivatives simultaneously under the catalysis of TFA and blue light irradiation. Their formation mechanisms were proposed on the basis of isotope-labeled experiments and HRMS analysis of the controlled experiment mixture, showing new reaction pathways. The current reaction provides a new strategy for the synthesis of biologically important spiro[indoline-3,3'-pyrrolidine]-2-one derivatives.

Phthalimidine Synthesis via Iridium-Catalyzed Reductive Lactamization.

J Org Chem

December 2024

Department of Organic Chemistry, College of Chemistry, Beijing University of Chemical Technology, Beijing 100029, P. R. China.

Herein, we report a sustainable and efficient method for the synthesis of structurally diverse phthalimidines from 2-formylbenzoic acid and primary amines using an iridium-catalyzed reductive lactamization strategy. The advantages of this method, such as the use of water-ethanol as a solvent, broad substrate scope, high catalyst efficiency (/ up to 10000), good scalability, and easy purification, enable it to be a practical approach to phthalimidines. It is suggested that iridium hydride formation is involved in the rate-limiting step.

Diabetic nephropathy is a prevalent complication of diabetes and stands as the primary contributor to end-stage renal disease. The global prevalence of diabetic nephropathy is on the rise, however, due to its intricate pathogenesis, there is currently an absence of efficacious treatments to enhance renal prognosis in affected patients. The mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR), a serine/threonine protease, assumes a pivotal role in cellular division, survival, apoptosis delay, and angiogenesis.

Aerosol light absorption has been widely considered as a contributing factor to the worsening of particulate pollution in large urban areas, primarily through its role in stabilizing the planetary boundary layer (PBL). Here, we report that absorption-dominated aerosol-radiation interaction can decrease near-surface fine particulate matter concentrations ([PM]) at a large-scale during wintertime haze events. A "warm bubble" effect by the significant heating rate of absorbing aerosols above the PBL top generates a secondary circulation, enhancing the upward motion (downward motion) and the convergence (divergence) in polluted (relatively clean) areas, with a net effect of lowering near-surface [PM].
