Phaeocystis globosa bloom develops from its early solitary cells, providing clues for early warning of its bloom and timely responding to possible consequences. However, the early prediction requires quantification of the solitary cells for a thorough understanding of bloom formation. Therefore, we developed an accurate, sensitive, and specific qPCR assay for this need.

Phaeocystis globosa (P. globosa) often colonizes and produces mucus, which may cause massive blooms in coastal areas. To understand mechanism of the growth and the impact factors for better control of the bloom, we conducted a laboratory experiment on the effect of nitrogen (N) or phosphorus (P) limitation on the cell growth, production of exopolysaccharide (EPS), and transparent exopolymeric particles (TEP) of P.

Natural killer lysin (Nklysin) is a small molecule antimicrobial peptide produced by natural killer cells and T lymphocytes and widely expressed in vertebrates. Homologues of Nklysin have been found in several fish, but only several of biological activity was identified. In this study, we characterized a Nklysin from grouper (Epinephelus coioides), and explored its expression pattern and biological function in bacterial infection.

FlAlyA, a PL7 alginate lyase with industrial potential, is widely applied in the preparation the alginate oligosaccharide because of its high activity of degradation the alginate. However, heat inactivation still limits the industrial application of FlAlyA. To further enhance its thermostability, a group of mutants were designed, according to evaluating the B-factor value and free energy change via computer-aided calculation.

Selenium incorporates into selenocysteine (Sec) which is a key component of selenoproteins implicated in antioxidant defense and redox homeostasis. Methionine sulfoxide reductases (Msr) play crucial roles in cellular defense against environmental stress. Whereas mammals have the MsrB selenoprotein form, unicellular organisms have MsrA.

Plasma lipidomics has been commonly used for biomarker discovery. Studies in cancer have suggested a significant alteration of circulating metabolite profiles which is correlated with cancer characteristics and treatment outcome. However, the lipidomics characteristics of nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) have rarely been studied.

Introduced mangroves are widely used to restore mangrove ecosystems in South China. Results of potential impacts on indicative benthic macroinvertebrates are divergent. We explored the community structure of benthic macroinvertebrates in the mangrove ecosystem of northern Beibu Gulf, China across four habitats: native Avicennia marina mangrove, introduced Laguncularia racemosa mangrove, native-introduced mixed mangrove, and unvegetated intertidal flat.

Identification, protection and restoration of spawning habitats are vital for protecting the depleted species. Asian horseshoe crabs are ecologically important macroinvertebrates in coastal and estuarine ecosystems. However, their spawning habitat studies were limited to several reports in tropical regions, possibly due to the lack of modified survey methods, particularly in habitats with a lower density of spawning adults, and/or intermingled with anthropogenic structures.

A palladium(II)-catalyzed enantioselective arylation of unbiased secondary C(sp)-H bonds was developed. The enantioselectivity was controlled by the combination of a pyridyl or isoquinolinyl directing group and an amino acid, -Boc-2-pentyl proline. A variety of 2-propyl azaaryls and biaryl iodides were employed to provide arylated products in moderate to good yields (up to 82%) with high enantioselectivities (up to 93:7 er).

Largemouth bass virus (LMBV) is one of the most devastating viral pathogens in farmed Largemouth bass. Aptamers are novel molecule probes and have been widely applied in the field of efficient therapeutic and diagnostic agents development. LMBV-infected fathead minnow cells (LMBV-FHM) served as target cells in this study, and three DNA aptamers (LBVA1, LBVA2, and LBVA3) were generated against target cells by SELEX technology.

In this paper, a novel silicon-based light-addressable potentiometric sensor (LAPS) has been designed for the detection of 1,5-anhydroglucitol (1,5-AG) in human serum. Reduced graphene oxide-chitosan-ferrocene (RGO-CS-Fc)/AuNPs nanohybrids and pyranose oxidase (PROD) enzyme is used to fabricate biological sensitive membrane unit by layer-by-layer assembly technology. When a bias voltage is provided to the LAPS system, the catalytic oxidation reaction between 1,5-AG and PROD to produce HO.

The frequency of harmful algal blooms (HABs) has increased in China in recent years. Information about harmful dinoflagellates and paralytic shellfish toxins (PSTs) is still limited in China, especially in the Beibu Gulf, where PSTs in shellfish have exceeded food safety guidelines on multiple occasions. To explore the nature of the threat from PSTs in the region, eight strains were isolated from waters of the Beibu Gulf and examined using phylogenetic analyses of large subunit (LSU) rDNA, small subunit (SSU) rDNA, and internal transcribed spacer (ITS) sequences.

Citizen science is a popular method for the long-term monitoring of the distribution of wild animals. The application of these methods in different species and environments still poses challenges, especially for aquatic animals. In this study, we investigated the distribution of the Bryde's whale (Balaenoptera edeni) in the Beibu Gulf of China by using scientific boat-based surveys and citizen science approaches using 2 different methods of data collection.

Many early studies of ribosomal RNA gene (rDNA) suggested that rDNA tandem repeats within species are homogeneous. However, increasing number of reports have found intra-individual rDNA polymorphism across a range of taxa. Here, we reported a high level of intra-individual polymorphism of 18S-ITS1-5.
