The effect of 30 days of β-alanine supplementation on neurophysiological responses of animals exposed to an acute heat stress (HS) was examined. Animals were randomized to one of three groups; exposed to HS (120 min at 40-41 °C) and fed a normal diet (EXP; = 12); EXP and supplemented with β-alanine (EXP + BA; = 10); or not exposed (CTL; = 10). Hippocampal (CA1, CA3 and DG) and hypothalamic (PVN) immunoreactive (ir) cell numbers of COX2, IBA-1, BDNF, NPY and HSP70 were analyzed.

Objective: The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of exposure of a low-intensity blast wave on androgen receptor (AR) density in the hippocampus and the potential influence on behavioral and cognitive responses.
Methods: Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly assigned to either a blast exposed group ( = 27) or an unexposed (control) group ( = 10). Animals were treated identically, except that rats within the control group were not exposed to any of the characteristics of the blast wave.

Simple logic would suggest that there should be some endophenotype for bipolar disorder. Possible endophenotypes could include specific variations in personality. Bagby and Ryder summarized the work up to that point by noting that the related personality traits of high neuroticism and harm avoidance seem to be associated with bipolar disorder as well as with unipolar depression, whereas higher novelty seeking may be associated only with bipolar patients.

The effect of 30 days of β-alanine supplementation (100 mg/kg) on behavioral response and expression of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), neuropeptide Y (NPY), and markers of inflammation was examined in both young (4 months) and older (14 months) rats. We hypothesized that animals fed β-alanine would experience reduced inflammation and an enhanced neurotrophin and behavioral response. Studies of ciliopathies have served in elucidating much of our knowledge of structure and function of primary cilia. We report humans with Bardet-Biedl syndrome who display intellectual disability, retinitis pigmentosa, obesity, short stature and brachydactyly, stemming from a homozyogous truncation mutation in SCAPER, a gene previously associated with mitotic progression. Our findings, based on linkage analysis and exome sequencing studies of two remotely related large consanguineous families, are in line with recent reports of SCAPER variants associated with intellectual disability and retinitis pigmentosa.

The basal activity of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis is highly dynamic and is characterized by both circadian and ultradian (pulsatile) patterns of hormone secretion. Pulsatility of glucocorticoids has been determined to be critical for optimal transcriptional, neuroendocrine, and behavioral responses.
