Mild cognitive impairment (MCI) is often a precursor of dementia, and in particular of Alzheimer's Disease (AD) which is the most common cause of dementia. Individuals with amnestic MCI are several-fold more likely to develop AD than the general population. Therefore, MCI comprises a well-detectable, early stage time-point for therapeutic intervention and strategic prevention.

Obsessive Compulsive Disorder During Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19): 2- and 6-Month Follow-Ups in a Clinical Trial.

Background: Psychiatric patients are perceived to be especially vulnerable during a pandemic, as it increases stress and uncertainty. Several current publications have considered obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) patients to be particularly vulnerable during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), and clinicians were advised to adjust treatments accordingly. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the 2- and 6-month impacts of COVID-19 on the symptom severity of OCD patients.

β-Alanine Supplementation Attenuates the Neurophysiological Response in Animals Exposed to an Acute Heat Stress.

The effect of 30 days of β-alanine supplementation on neurophysiological responses of animals exposed to an acute heat stress (HS) was examined. Animals were randomized to one of three groups; exposed to HS (120 min at 40-41 °C) and fed a normal diet (EXP;  = 12); EXP and supplemented with β-alanine (EXP + BA;  = 10); or not exposed (CTL;  = 10). Hippocampal (CA1, CA3 and DG) and hypothalamic (PVN) immunoreactive (ir) cell numbers of COX2, IBA-1, BDNF, NPY and HSP70 were analyzed.

Changes in Hippocampal Androgen Receptor Density and Behavior in Sprague-Dawley Male Rats Exposed to a Low-Pressure Blast Wave.

Objective: The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of exposure of a low-intensity blast wave on androgen receptor (AR) density in the hippocampus and the potential influence on behavioral and cognitive responses.

Methods: Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly assigned to either a blast exposed group ( = 27) or an unexposed (control) group ( = 10). Animals were treated identically, except that rats within the control group were not exposed to any of the characteristics of the blast wave.

Background: Substitution can be defined as the consciously motivated choice to use one drug, either licit or illicit, instead of another, due to perceptions of cost, availability, safety, legality, substance characteristics, and substance attributions. Substitution represents a potential risk to drug users, mainly when substitutes are of higher potency and toxicity. This study offers a basic conceptualization of illicit substitution behavior and describes substitution patterns among users of two highly prevalent drugs of abuse-heroin and cannabis.

Atrial fibrillation (AF) is a progressive arrhythmia with underlying mechanisms that are not fully elucidated, partially due to lack of reliable and affordable animal models. Here, we introduce a system for long-term assessment of AF susceptibility (substrate) in ambulatory rats implanted with miniature electrodes on the atrium. Studies of ciliopathies have served in elucidating much of our knowledge of structure and function of primary cilia. We report humans with Bardet-Biedl syndrome who display intellectual disability, retinitis pigmentosa, obesity, short stature and brachydactyly, stemming from a homozyogous truncation mutation in SCAPER, a gene previously associated with mitotic progression. Our findings, based on linkage analysis and exome sequencing studies of two remotely related large consanguineous families, are in line with recent reports of SCAPER variants associated with intellectual disability and retinitis pigmentosa.

Introduction: Intense military operations during deployment or training are associated with elevations in inflammatory cytokine markers. However, the influence of an inflammatory response on military-specific skills is unclear. This study examined the association between brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), glial fibrillar acidic protein, markers of inflammation, marksmanship and cognitive function following a week of intense military field training.

Psychiatric disorders and autism in young children with 22q11.2 deletion syndrome compared to children with idiopathic autism.

Background: The 22q11.2 deletion syndrome (22q11DS) is a neurogenetic condition characterized by high rates of psychiatric disorders. To our knowledge, this is the first study to assess psychiatric disorders in young children with 22q11DS using a structured psychiatric diagnostic interview, and one of few studies to use the complete gold standard diagnostic evaluation to examine the prevalence of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) in young children with 22q11DS and compare it to a matched control group with iASD.

Pulsatility of glucocorticoids has been determined to be critical for optimal transcriptional, neuroendocrine, and behavioral responses. Objective: To confirm prior findings that the larger the maximum monthly increase in solar insolation in springtime, the younger the age of onset of bipolar disorder.
