Yunnan Provincial Engineering and Research Center for Sustainable Utilization of Honey Bee Resources, Eastern Bee Research Institute, College of Animal Science and Technology, Yunnan Agricultural University, Kunming, China. Electronic address:

Plastics and pesticides are commonly used and often coexist in the environment. As pollinating insects, honeybees are simultaneously exposed to both these toxins. However, there has been no study on the toxic effects of nano-polystyrene plastics (nanoPS) and cyfluthrin (Cy) on the Apis cerana cerana Fabricius until now.

is the original host of ceranae, a widespread fungal parasite that causes bee nosemosis, which severely threatens the health of bee colonies and the sustainable development of the apiculture industry. To evaluate the impact of infection on workers, spores were purified and used to inoculate newly emerged workers to evaluate the effects of infection. This was followed by an in-depth investigation of spore load and host sucrose solution consumption.

Yunnan Provincial Engineering and Research Center for Sustainable Utilization of Honey Bee Resources, Eastern Bee Research Institute, College of Animal Science and Technology, Yunnan Agricultural University, Kunming, China.

, an ancient plant species endemic to Yunnan Province, China, remains underexplored in terms of its endophytic bacterial communities. The plant tissue pedicel serves as the connection between the flower and the stem, not only delivers nutrients but also transmits metabolic substances from endophytic bacteria to the nectar during long-term microbial colonization and probably improves the antagonistic activity of nectar against yeast. Hence, 138 isolates of endophytic bacteria have been isolated in this study from the pedicels of 12- and 60-year-old .

Cophylogeny has been identified between gut bacteria and their animal host and is highly relevant to host health, but little research has extended to gut bacteriophages. Here we use bee model to investigate host specificity and cophylogeny in the "animal-gut bacteria-phage" tripartite system. Through metagenomic sequencing upon different bee species, the gut phageome revealed a more variable composition than the gut bacteriome.

Background: Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic autoimmune disease lacking a definitive cure. Although conventional treatments such as dexamethasone and methotrexate are prevalent, their usage is constrained by potential adverse effects. Melittin (MLT) has emerged as a promising natural anti-rheumatic drug; however, studies focusing on the role of MLT in modulating the expression and metabolism of RA-related genes are scarce.

Honey bees have a very interesting phenomenon where the larval diets of two different honey bee species are exchanged, resulting in altered phenotypes, namely, a honey bee nutritional crossbreed. This is a classical epigenetic process, but its underlying mechanisms remain unclear. This study aims to investigate the contribution of DNA methylation to the phenotypic alternation of a nutritional crossbreed.

Apis cerana cerana exhibits a prominent biological trait known as comb gnawing. In this study, gnawed combs from colonies during different seasons were collected, investigating the comb age and locations of gnawing. Patterns of comb gnawing were recorded, and the effects of 2 factors, namely, comb type and season, on the mass of wax residues and the gnawed surface area were measured.

Melittin promotes dexamethasone in the treatment of adjuvant rheumatoid arthritis in rats.

Front Pharmacol

February 2024

Yunnan Provincial Engineering and Research Center for Sustainable Utilization of Honey Bee Resources, Eastern Bee Research Institute, College of Animal Science and Technology, Yunnan Agricultural University, Kunming, China.

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is an erosive-destructive inflammation of the joints, and the chronic, long-term stiffness and deformation induced by RA are some of the symptoms of arthritis that are difficult to treat. Dexamethasone (DEX) and melittin (MLT) are two interesting anti-inflammatory substances, both of which possess anti-inflammatory effects exerted through the suppression of the immune system. The purpose of this study was to explore the role of MLT in the treatment of RA by DEX as well as to clarify the influence of MLT on the efficacy and side effects of DEX.

Honey bees play a critical role as pollinators. However, their reproduction success and survival face severe threats due to the deterioration of their living environment. Notably, environmental conditions during their preimaginal stage inside brood cells can influence their immune capabilities and overall health after emergence.

Background: Bee colony sound is a continuous, low-frequency buzzing sound that varies with the environment or the colony's behavior and is considered meaningful. Bees use sounds to communicate within the hive, and bee colony sounds investigation can reveal helpful information about the circumstances in the colony. Therefore, one crucial step in analyzing bee colony sounds is to extract appropriate acoustic feature.

This study investigated the changes in comb cell structure and external morphological characteristics of the Chinese honey bee under ten successive generations to determine the optimal time to replace the old combs. Accordingly, ten Chinese honey bee experimental colonies were established, and natural combs were constructed for continuous rearing of workers for 1-10 generations. The brood comb thickness, brood cell structure, birth weight, and morphological characteristics of workers were determined.

American foulbrood (AFB) is a devastating disease of honey bees. There remains a gap in the understanding of the interactions between the causative agent and host, so we used shotgun proteomics to gain new insights. Nano-LC-MS/MS analysis preceded visual description and Paenibacillus larvae identification in the same individual sample.

Honey bee subspecies originate from specific geographical areas in Africa, Europe and the Middle East, and beekeepers interested in specific phenotypes have imported genetic material to regions outside of the bees' original range for use either in pure lines or controlled crosses. Moreover, imported drones are present in the environment and mate naturally with queens from the local subspecies. The resulting admixture complicates population genetics analyses, and population stratification can be a major problem for association studies.

Yunnan Provincial Engineering and Research Center for Sustainable Utilization of Honeybee Resources, Eastern Bee Research Institute, College of Animal Science and Technology, Yunnan Agricultural University, Kunming, China.

The cell orientation characteristics of the natural combs of honey bees have received much research attention. Although natural combs have been shown to be composed of cells with three orientations-vertical, intermediate (oblique), and horizontal-the proportion of comb cells in these three orientations varies. Knowledge of the comb-building preferences of honey bees is essential for the installation of wax comb foundations, and clarification of the cell orientation characteristics of natural honey bee combs is important for beekeeping.

Article Synopsis
  • Honey bees play a crucial role as pollinators for economically important crops but face risks from pesticide exposure, leading to colony losses.
  • This study investigated pesticide levels in dead/dying bees linked to poisoning incidents and compared them with live bees and bee bread from the hive for contamination assessment.
  • Findings revealed that not all poisoning was tied to suspected crops, with several highly toxic pesticides identified and a significant presence of contamination even at reference sites, indicating a more complex relationship between pesticide use and bee health.
