Minerva Obstet Gynecol

September 2024

Department of Gynecology and Obstetrics, University of Eastern Piedmont, Maggiore della Carità Hospital, Novara, Italy.

Uterine myomas are the most common benign gynecological tumors among women of reproductive age. The laparoscopic approach, when feasible, is considered the most suitable and safe technique for intervention. Typically, uterine muscular wall defects are sutured with absorbable filaments.

This study compared long-term surgical outcomes of the scleral flap versus scleral pocket technique for sutureless intrascleral one-piece intraocular lens (IOL) fixation. : A retrospective comparative study was conducted at a single center, involving consecutive patients undergoing sutureless intrascleral one-piece IOL implantation, between January 2020 and May 2022. Eyes were divided into two groups based on the surgical technique: group 1 underwent scleral flap = 64), and group 2 received scleral pocket technique ( = 59).

Idiopathic epiretinal membrane (ERM) often leads to visual symptoms such as metamorphopsia and decreased central vision. This study aimed to evaluate functional, structural, and microvascular characteristics in patients with different stages of idiopathic ERM who were candidates for surgery, with a focus on identifying potential indicators for surgical timing. A retrospective cohort study was conducted on consecutive patients with unilateral idiopathic ERM who were candidates for surgery.

Postpartum hemorrhage (PPH) represents one of the principal causes of maternal mortality and morbidity worldwide. Uterine balloon tamponade (UBT) is recommended for the treatment of postpartum hemorrhage due to uterine atony in women who do not respond to pharmacological first-line treatment. The success of UBT in bleeding control is related to the correct positioning of the device, since incorrect insertion can be associated with ineffectiveness and requires time-consuming repositioning maneuvers, with a further increase in blood loss.

Primary ovarian failure (POF) is caused by follicle exhaustion and is associated with menstrual irregularities and elevated gonadotropin levels, which lead to infertility before the age of 40 years. The etiology of POI is mostly unknown, but a heterogeneous genetic and familial background can be identified in a subset of cases. Abnormalities in the fragile X mental retardation 1 gene () are among the most prevalent monogenic causes of POI.

The prevailing standard of care for primary repair of full-thickness macular holes (FTMHs) is pars plana vitrectomy with internal limiting membrane (ILM) peeling and gas tamponade, as it gives a high closure rate of roughly 90%. On the other hand, the surgical management of recurrent and refractory FTMHs represents, so far, a demanding and debated subject in vitreoretinal surgery since various approaches have been proposed, with no consensus concerning both adequate selection criteria and the best surgical approach. In addition, the existence of multiple case series/interventional studies showing comparable results and the lack of studies with a direct comparison of multiple surgical techniques may lead to uncertainty.

International guidelines suggested skin tests with Polyethylene-glycol (PEG) and polysorbate 80 (PS-80), to investigate a possible hypersensitivity to these excipients either to identify subjects at risk of developing allergic reactions to Covid-19 vaccines, or in patients with suspected IgE mediated hypersensitivity reactions (HR) to the Covid-19 vaccine. The main purpose of this study was to investigate the prevalence of PEG and PS sensitization in patients with a clinical history of HR to drugs containing PEG/PS and in patients with a suspected Covid-19 vaccine immediate HR. This was a multicenter retrospective study conducted by allergists belonging to 20 Italian medical centers.

Describe the characteristics of ventilation-acquired pneumonia (VAP) and potential risk factors in critically ill SARS-CoV-2 patients admitted in three French public hospitals during the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic. We conducted a monocentric retrospective study in seven Marseille intensive care units (ICUs) aiming to describe VAP characteristics and identify their risk factors. VAP patients were compared to a non-VAP control group.

Aim/hypothesis: To compare the frequency of diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) at diagnosis of type 1 diabetes in Italy during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 with the frequency of DKA during 2017-2019.

Methods: Forty-seven pediatric diabetes centers caring for >90% of young people with diabetes in Italy recruited 4,237 newly diagnosed children with type 1 diabetes between 2017 and 2020 in a longitudinal study. Four subperiods in 2020 were defined based on government-imposed containment measures for COVID-19, and the frequencies of DKA and severe DKA compared with the same periods in 2017-2019.

Background: COVID-19 pandemic caused huge decrease of pediatric admissions to Emergency Department (ED), arising concerns about possible delays in diagnosis and treatment of severe disorders.

Methods: Impact of COVID-19 on Pediatric Emergency Room (ICOPER) was a retrospective multicentre observational study including 23 Italian EDs.All the children <18 years admitted, between March 9th and May 3rd 2020 stratified by age, priority code, cause of admission and outcome have been included and compared to those admitted in the same period of 2019.

Objective: To evaluate the performance of Jelonet Plus (JP) and UrgoTul (UT), assessing pain at dressing removal when managing acute or chronic wounds at granulation and epithelialisation stages.

Methods: This was a randomised, multicentre, controlled single-blinded study using a cross-over design. Hospitalised and ambulatory patients presenting with non-infected acute or chronic wounds (at least 40% of wound area of ≤100cm covered with granulation tissue) were randomly allocated to be treated with either JP or UT dressings applied according to a standardised local care procedure for two days.

Contrary to common psychosurgical practice in the 1950s, Dr. Jean Talairach had the intuition, based on clinical experience, that the brain connectome and neuroplasticity had a role to play in psychosurgery. Due to the remarkable progress of pharmacology at that time and to the technical limits of neurosurgery, these concepts were not put into practice.

Objective: We recently showed the superiority of a matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) modulating dressing (foam impregnated with NOSF, nano-oligosaccharide factor) compared with a lipidocolloid matrix (TLC) control dressing in median wound area reduction (WAR). Here we report the results from the same study assessing the performance and safety of TLC-NOSF in the local management of venous leg ulcers (VLUs) or mixed leg ulcers and determining its impact on the patient's health-related quality of life (HRQoL).

Method: A superiority randomised double-blind controlled trial was conducted on patients presenting with a non-infected leg ulcer (VLUs or mixed leg ulcers) of predominantly venous origin (ABPI >0.

Bullous pemphigoid (BP) is an inflammatory autoimmune bullous disease involving cytokines and proteases in the process of blister formation. Recently, IL-17 and IL-23 were evidenced in lesional skin and serum of BP patients at time of diagnosis, but their involvement in disease outcome has still not been investigated yet. We then analysed IL-17 and IL-23 serum levels during the first months of follow-up upon treatment.

Retronychia : four new cases.

Eur J Dermatol

February 2015

Department of Dermatology, Beauregard Hospital, CHR Metz-Thionville, 21, rue des Frères, 57100 Thionville, France.

Retronychia (RN) refers to the incarnation of the nail plate in the proximal nail fold. We report four clinical cases of this little-known pathology, where there may be a long delay in diagnosis. RN exhibits a triad of clinical features, which are chronic paronychia, liquid discharge from under the nail fold and disruption of the linear nail growth.
