Article Synopsis
  • A study evaluated the effects of a higher dose of corticosteroids on COVID-19 patients who needed oxygen or ventilatory support, building on previous findings that low-dose corticosteroids reduced mortality in similar patients.
  • The research was part of the RECOVERY trial, which randomly assigned patients to receive either higher dose corticosteroids or usual care with a lower dose, measuring 28-day mortality rates as the primary outcome.
  • From May 2021 to May 2022, 1,272 patients were included, with notable participation from Asia and the UK; results showed that nearly all of the patients who received usual care also received some form of low-dose corticosteroids.

As the number of women entering medicine has increased, so has the number of women entering orthopaedics; however, many orthopaedic programs struggle to create an equitable space for women, particularly in leadership. Struggles experienced by women include sexual harassment and gender bias, lack of visibility, lack of well-being, disproportionate family care responsibilities, and lack of flexibility in the criteria for promotions. Historically, sexual harassment and bias has been a problem faced by women physicians, and often the harassment continues even when the issue has been reported; many women find that reporting it results in negative consequences for their career and training.

Article Synopsis
  • Pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) is a rare condition characterized by high mean pulmonary arterial pressure due to abnormal cellular signaling in the pulmonary arteries, requiring targeted treatments.
  • Current PAH medications focus mainly on vasodilatory pathways, but emerging biologics, including monoclonal antibodies and recombinant proteins, show potential in addressing imbalances in critical signaling pathways like BMPRII and TGF-β.
  • Biologics, such as sotatercept, have demonstrated effectiveness in improving PAH symptoms and may offer a safer alternative to small molecule drugs, although they can cause immunogenic side effects.

Preservation of Motion in Spine Surgery.

J Am Acad Orthop Surg

April 2023

From the Cleveland Clinic Akron General Medical Center, Akron, OH (Preston and Hoffmann), Texas Back Institute, Plano, TX (Satin and Derman), and William Beaumont Hospital, Royal Oak, MI (Khalil).

The number of spinal procedures and spinal fusions continues to grow. Although fusion procedures have a high success rate, they have inherent risks such as pseudarthrosis and adjacent segment disease. New innovations in spine techniques have sought to eliminate these complications by preserving motion in the spinal column.

An isotope signature for diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis?

Am J Biol Anthropol

June 2022

School of Archaeological and Forensic Sciences, University of Bradford, Bradford, UK.

Objectives: Diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis (DISH) has recurrently been associated with a rich diet (high in protein and higher trophic level foods); however, very few studies have investigated this link using carbon and nitrogen (δC and δN) stable isotope analysis. This paper explores the relationship between DISH and diet in two Roman urban communities by analyzing individuals with and without DISH.

Materials And Methods: δC and δN analysis carried out on collagen from 33 rib samples (No DISH: 27; early DISH: 4; DISH: 2) selected from individuals buried at the Romano-British site of Baldock (UK), 41 rib samples (No DISH: 38; early DISH: 3) from individuals from the Catalan Roman site of Santa Caterina (Barcelona, Spain).
