The dielectric properties of pancreatic tissues from human healthy and tumour-bearing tissues have been extracted from impedance measurement on ex vivo, freshly excised samples. They are compared to pig pancreas samples, measured following the same protocol. The purpose is to add data to the scarce literature on the properties of the human pancreas and pancreatic tumours, for treatment planning, tissue identification and numerical simulations.

In children with sickle cell disease (SCD), splenectomy is immediately beneficial for acute sequestration crises and hypersplenism (ASSC/HyS) but portends a long-term risk of asplenia-related complications. We retrieved peripheral and splenic red blood cells (RBCs) from 17 SCD children/teenagers undergoing partial splenectomy for ASSC/HyS, 12 adult subjects without RBC-related disease undergoing splenectomy (controls), five human spleens perfused ex vivo with Hb- and Hb-RBC, and quantified abnormal RBC by microscopy, spleen-mimetic RBC filtration, and adhesion assays. Spleens were analyzed by immunohistochemistry and transmission electron microscopy (TEM).

Background And Objectives: Among patients undergoing liver resection for intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (ICC), perioperative bleeding requiring blood transfusion is a common complication, yet preoperative identification of patients at risk for transfusion remains challenging. The objective of this study was to develop a preoperative risk score for blood transfusion requirement during surgery for ICC.
Methods: Patients undergoing curative-intent liver surgery for ICC (1990-2020) were identified from a multi-institutional database.

Gastric cancer (GC) is a major cause of cancer-related mortality worldwide. It is often associated with a bad prognosis because of its asymptomatic phenotype until advanced stages, highlighting the need for its prevention and early detection. GC development is preceded by the emergence of gastric preneoplasia lesions (GPNLs), namely atrophic gastritis (AG), intestinal metaplasia (IM), and dysplasia (DYS).

The tumour microenvironment (TME) of intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (iCCA) is complex and plays a role in prognosis and resistance to treatments. We aimed to decipher the iCCA TME phenotype using multiplex sequential immunohistochemistry (MS-IHC) to investigate which cell types and their spatial location may affect its prognosis. This was a retrospective study of 109 iCCA resected samples.

Background: Early complicated Crohn's disease (CD) may require ileal resection as first-line treatment.
Aim: To evaluate the long-term outcomes of patients who underwent early ileal resection.
Methods: We conducted a retrospective study in two inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) referral centres, including patients with ileocaecal resection and segmental ileal resection within 5 years of CD diagnosis.

Inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) etiology is multifactorial. Luminal microRNAs (miRNAs) have been suspected to play a role in the promotion of chronic inflammation, but the extent to which fecal miRNAs are interacting with the intestinal ecosystem in a way that contribute to diseases, including IBD, remains unknown. Here, fecal let-7b and miR-21 were found elevated, associated with inflammation, and correlating with multiple bacteria in IBD patients and IL-10 mice, model of spontaneous colitis.

Introduction: Nonfunctioning pancreatic neuroendocrine tumor (NF-PanNET) ≤2 cm can be observed or resected. Surgery remains recommended for NF-PanNET >2 cm but its extent, enucleation (EN) versus formal resection, remains controversial.
Methods: Multicentric retrospective cohort of sporadic NF-PanNET patients treated with EN.

Background Attenuation coefficient (AC) and shear-wave speed (SWS) are established US markers for assessing patients with metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD), while shear-wave dispersion slope (DS) is not. Purpose To assess the relationship between the multiparametric US imaging markers DS, AC, and SWS and liver histopathologic necroinflammation in patients with MASLD. Materials and Methods This international multicenter prospective study enrolled consecutive patients with biopsy-proven MASLD between June 2019 and March 2023.

Background: Outcomes related to chronic intestinal failure (CIF) vary significantly within and between countries. While there are extensive European Society of Clinical Nutrition and Metabolism (ESPEN) guidelines on the delivery of optimal care in CIF, there are no international consensus recommendations on the structure or resources required, nor on the process and appropriate outcome measures for delivering such quality care in CIF.
Aim: The aim of this position paper is therefore to devise ESPEN-endorsed, internationally agreed quality of care standards, covering the resources, systems and standards that centres should aim for in order to deliver optimal CIF care.

Chronic pancreatitis (CP) is a complex disease with genetic and environmental factors at play. Through trio exome sequencing, a de novo SEC16A frameshift variant in a Chinese teenage CP patient is identified. Subsequent targeted next-generation sequencing of the SEC16A gene in 1,061 Chinese CP patients and 1,196 controls reveals a higher allele frequency of rare nonsynonymous SEC16A variants in patients (4.

Home parenteral nutrition (HPN) is a complex therapy, which requires dedicated facilities and expertise. However, the management and provision of HPN differs significantly between countries and between HPN centers within countries. These differences lead to heterogeneity in the quality of care received by patients, with variable impact on the appropriateness, safety, and effectiveness of HPN, and resultant variability in the quality of life that a patient may expect.

The physics of shear waves traveling through matter carries fundamental insights into its structure, for instance, quantifying stiffness for disease characterization. However, the origin of shear wave attenuation in tissue is currently not properly understood. Attenuation is caused by two phenomena: absorption due to energy dissipation and scattering on structures such as vessels fundamentally tied to the material's microstructure.

Purpose: Although noninvasive ventilation (NIV) may reduce reintubation in patients with acute hypoxemic respiratory failure following abdominal surgery, this strategy has not been specifically assessed in patients with obesity.
Methods: We conducted a post hoc analysis of a multicenter randomized controlled trial comparing NIV delivered via facial mask to standard oxygen therapy among patients with obesity and acute hypoxemic respiratory failure within 7 days after abdominal surgery. The primary outcome was reintubation within 7 days.

Objective: Circulating tumour DNA (ctDNA) is a promising non-invasive biomarker in cancer. We aim to assess the dynamic of ctDNA in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC).
Design: We analysed 772 plasmas from 173 patients with HCC collected at the time of diagnosis or treatment (n=502), 24 hours after locoregional treatment (n=154) and during follow-up (n=116).
