Minimally Invasive Mitral Valve Surgery Using a Cold Fibrillatory Cardiac Arrest Technique in Patients With Prior Cardiac Surgery.

Tex Heart Inst J

July 2024

Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery, Michael E. DeBakey Department of Surgery, Baylor St Luke's Hospital, Baylor College of Medicine, Houston, Texas.

Objective: Minimally invasive mitral valve surgery (mini-MVS) is typically reserved for patients who have not undergone open cardiac surgery. In the reoperative setting, using intrapericardial dissection for crossclamping the aorta through a minimally invasive approach can be difficult and, at times, risky. Cold fibrillatory cardiac arrest (CFCA) with systemic cardiopulmonary bypass without cross-clamping is a well-described technique; however, data about its safety for patients who undergo reoperative mini-MVS are limited.

Unexpected Drug-Induced Liver Injury Associated With MenoFit: A Synbiotic Menopause Supplement.

ACG Case Rep J

September 2023

Department of Pathology and Immunology, Baylor St. Luke's Hospital, Baylor College of Medicine, Houston, TX.

MenoFit is a widely available over-the-counter synbiotic supplement, which is marketed for use in relieving menopausal symptoms. So far, there is no published data on liver injury because of its use. We present the first reported case of MenoFit-induced liver injury in a patient who presented with 1 week of jaundice and abnormal liver biochemical tests in the absence of other risk factors and negative comprehensive workup for known etiologies of liver disease.

Background: Accurate localization of premature ventricular contractions (PVC) focus is a prerequisite to successful catheter ablation.

Objective: The objective was to evaluate the software View Into Ventricular Onset (VIVO) accuracy at locating the anatomical origins for premature ventricular contractions. The VIVO device noninvasively creates a model of the patient's heart and torso, with exact locations of 12‑lead ECG electrodes, and applies a mathematical algorithm from surface signals to determine the origin of the arrhythmia.

Very Late Aortic Endograft Infection With Listeria monocytogenes in an Elderly Man.

Tex Heart Inst J

January 2022

Division of Vascular Surgery and Endovascular Surgery, Baylor College of Medicine, Baylor-St. Luke's Hospital, Houston, Texas.

Endograft infection with Listeria monocytogenes is a rare, potentially devastating complication of endovascular aortic aneurysm repair. To our knowledge, only 8 cases have been reported. We describe the case of a 72-year-old man who presented with L.

To evaluate the safety and effectiveness of the MANTA percutaneous vascular closure device in patients undergoing percutaneous endovascular aneurysm repair (PEVAR) or thoracic endovascular aortic repair (TEVAR). The SAFE MANTA Study ( identifier NCT02908880) was a prospective, single-arm, multicenter trial in patients undergoing endovascular interventions using large-bore sheaths (transcatheter aortic valve replacement, PEVAR, or TEVAR) at 20 sites in North America. Patient selection intended to test the MANTA device in populations without morbid obesity, severe calcification, or a severely scarred femoral access area.

Topical hemostatic agents are used in conjunction with conventional procedures to reduce blood loss. They are often used in cardiothoracic surgery, which is particularly prone to bleeding risks. Variation in their use exists because detailed policy and practice guidelines reflecting the current medical evidence have not been developed to promote best surgical practice in this setting.

Endovascular Recanalization in Acute Ischemic Stroke Using the Solitaire FR Revascularization Device with Adjunctive C-Arm CT Imaging.

AJNR Am J Neuroradiol

July 2015

Neuro-Interventional Radiology (H.A.M., H.S., M.E.M.), Baylor College of Medicine, Houston, Texas Neurovascular Center (H.A.M., H.S., M.E.M.), Baylor St. Luke's Hospital, Houston, Texas.

In this clinical report, we examined a single-center experience by using the Solitaire FR Revascularization Device in the treatment of acute ischemic stroke in which there was poor initial visualization of the occluded arterial branches by using biplanar cerebral angiography. In all cases, adjunctive C-arm CT was used during the deployment of the thrombectomy device to gain additional information regarding device placement and expansion. Outcome measures included the extent of reperfusion, posttreatment changes in NIHSS scores, posttreatment TICI scores, cerebral hemorrhage, and survival.
