PhD Program for Cancer Molecular Biology and Drug Discovery, College of Medical Science and Technology, Taipei Medical University, and Academia Sinica Taipei 11529, Taiwan.

Objective: Anemia is a pathological condition characterized by reduced oxygen bioavailability and/or changes in hematological parameters. This study investigated the anti-anemic activities of (CP) phytoconstituents in aluminium-chloride-induced anemic rats.

Method: Twenty-seven rats were randomized into nine groups of three rats as follows; group 1 was the normal (non-induced) group, 2-9 were anemic rats administered 1 mL distilled water, standard drug (3 mg/kg body weight (bw) ferrous sulphate), 100, 300 and 500 mg/kg bw of crude methanolic extract of CP (CMECP) of the leaf and 100, 300 and 500 mg/kg bw of CMECP of the seed respectively in the first stage of the study.

While considerable scholarship has explored responsibilities owed to research participants at the conclusion of explanatory clinical trials, no guidance exists regarding responsibilities owed at the conclusion of a pragmatic clinical trial (PCT). Yet post-trial responsibilities in PCTs present distinct considerations from those emphasized in existing guidance and prior scholarship. Among these considerations include the responsibilities of the healthcare delivery systems in which PCTs are embedded, and decisions about implementation for interventions that demonstrate meaningful benefit following their integration into usual care settings-or deimplementation for those that fail to do so.

Objective: Pediatric tracheostomy is associated with high morbidity and mortality, yet clinician knowledge and quality of tracheostomy care may vary widely. In situ simulation is effective at detecting and mitigating related latent safety threats, but evaluation via retrospective video review has disadvantages (eg, delayed analysis, and potential data loss). We evaluated whether a novel mobile application is accurate and reliable for assessment of in situ tracheostomy emergency simulations.

Article Synopsis
  • Pulmonary sarcomatoid carcinoma (PSC) is a rare and aggressive type of lung cancer that has both normal cell and unusual cell features.
  • Researchers studied PSC samples and compared them to normal lung tissues to understand their differences better, focusing on genetics and immune responses.
  • They found 27 gene mutations in PSC, discovered two types of PSC based on immune system activity, and noted that one type (Immune High) had better survival rates, showing that the immune system plays a big role in fighting this cancer.

Article Synopsis
  • High-resolution computed tomography (HRCT) is essential for diagnosing Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis (IPF), but it can be confused with other interstitial lung diseases (ILDs) due to similar radiologic patterns.
  • Researchers used mass spectrometry to analyze plasma extracellular vesicles (EVs) from different patient groups, identifying a five-protein signature that distinguishes IPF from other ILDs and healthy individuals.
  • The study validated these biomarkers in independent cohorts, showing high accuracy but emphasizes the need for further large-scale studies to confirm their clinical application.

Objectives: Implementation and sustainability of new care processes in emergency departments (EDs) is difficult. We describe experiences of implementing geriatric care processes in EDs that upgraded their accreditation level for the Geriatric Emergency Department Accreditation (GEDA) program. These EDs can provide a model for adopting and sustaining guidelines for evidence-based geriatric care.

In patients with transposition of the great arteries, the continuation of prostaglandin E1 is more frequent in patients with intact ventricular septum in comparison to patients with ventricular septal defect. Ballon atrial septostomy did not eliminate the need for prostaglandin E1 infusion until the time of surgery in both subgroups of patients.

The infant gut microbiome is increasingly recognized as a reservoir of antibiotic resistance genes, yet the assembly of gut resistome in infants and its influencing factors remain largely unknown. We characterized resistome in 4132 metagenomes from 963 infants in six countries and 4285 resistance genes were observed. The inherent resistome pattern of healthy infants ( = 272) could be distinguished by two stages: a multicompound resistance phase (Months 0-7) and a tetracycline-mupirocin-β-lactam-dominant phase (Months 8-14).

Background: We sought to measure frequency of achieving an optimal outcome after stage 1 palliation (S1P) for hypoplastic left heart syndrome and variants, determine factors associated with optimal outcomes, and compare outcomes after stage 2 palliation (S2P) using the National Pediatric Cardiology Quality Improvement Collaborative database (2008-2016).

Methods And Results: This is a retrospective cohort study with optimal outcome defined a priori as meeting all of the following: (1) discharge after S1P in <19 days (top quartile), (2) no red flag or major event readmissions before S2P, and (3) performing S2P between 90 and 240 days of age. Optimal outcome was achieved in 256 of 2182 patients (11.

Analysis of lung alveolar type 2 (AT2) progenitor stem cells has highlighted fundamental mechanisms that direct their differentiation into alveolar type 1 cells (AT1s) in lung repair and disease. However, microRNA (miRNA) mediated post-transcriptional mechanisms which govern this nexus remain understudied. We show here that the miRNA family serves a homeostatic role in governance of AT2 quiescence, specifically by preventing the uncontrolled accumulation of AT2 transitional cells and by promoting AT1 differentiation.

Background: Community engagement is increasingly recognized as a necessity in addressing intractable racial and ethnic health disparities in the United States. However, institutions have not adequately trained resident physicians in developing symbiotic community partnerships that preserve community autonomy and identity without exploitation. Our goals were to highlight the experiences of expert academic emergency physicians in creating innovative, community-driven, and anti-racist solutions to achieving measurable equity in health outcomes and to introduce a novel framework entitled the Social Change Method to take a community-embedded intervention from concept to creation.
