In the pursuit of enhancing cancer treatment efficacy while minimizing side effects, near-infrared (NIR) photothermal therapy (PTT) has emerged as a promising approach. By using photothermally active nanomaterials, PTT enables localized hyperthermia, effectively eliminating cancer cells with minimal invasiveness and toxicity. Among these nanomaterials, gold nanostars (AuNS) stand out due to their tunable plasmon resonance and efficient light absorption.

Electronic address:
Orthopedic implant failures, primarily attributed to aseptic loosening and implant site infections, pose significant challenges to patient recovery and lead to revision surgeries. Combining piezoelectric materials with ionic liquids as interfaces for orthopedic implants presents an innovative approach to addressing both issues simultaneously. In this study, films of poly(vinylidene fluoride-trifluoroethylene) (P(VDF-TrFE)) incorporated with 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium hydrogen sulfate ([Emim][HSO]) ionic liquid were developed.

Electronic address:
Implant failure is primarily caused by poor osseointegration and bacterial colonization, which demands readmissions and revision surgeries to correct it. A novel approach involves engineering multifunctional interfaces using piezoelectric polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) materials, which mimic bone tissue's electroactive properties to promote bone integration and provide antibacterial functionality when mechanically stimulated. In this study, PVDF films were coated with antibacterial essential oil nanoparticles and antibiofilm enzymes using a layer-by-layer (LBL) approach to ensure antibacterial properties even without mechanical stimulation.

The continuous rising of infections caused by multidrug-resistant pathogens is becoming a global healthcare concern. Developing new bio-based materials with unique chemical and structural features that allow efficient interaction with bacteria is thus important for fighting this phenomenon. To address this issue, we report an antimicrobial biomaterial that results from clustering local facial amphiphilicity from amino-modified cellulose on silk fibroin β-sheets, by simply blending the two components through casting technology.

Significant progress in lignins valorization and development of high-performance sustainable materials have been achieved in recent years. Reports related to lignin utilization indicate excellent prospects considering green chemistry, chemical engineering, energy, materials and polymer science, physical chemistry, biochemistry, among others. To fully realize such potential, one of the most promising routes involves lignin uses in nanocomposites and nanohybrid assemblies, where synergistic interactions are highly beneficial.

Nanoparticle-mediated thermal treatments have demonstrated high efficacy and versatility as a local anticancer strategy beyond traditional global hyperthermia. Nanoparticles act as heating generators that can trigger therapeutic responses at both the cell and tissue level. In some cases, treatment happens in the absence of a global temperature rise, damaging the tumor cells even more selectively than other nanotherapeutic strategies.

Cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) were incorporated into poly (vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) to tailor the mechanical and dielectric properties of this electroactive polymer. PVDF/CNC nanocomposites with concentrations up to 15 wt.% were prepared by solvent-casting followed by quick vacuum drying in order to ensure the formation of the electroactive γ-phase.

The separator membrane is an essential component of lithium-ion batteries, separating the anode and cathode, and controlling the number and mobility of the lithium ions. Among the polymer matrices most commonly investigated for battery separators are poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) and its copolymers poly(vinylidene fluoride-co-trifluoroethylene) (PVDF-TrFE), poly(vinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene) (PVDF-HFP), and poly(vinylidene fluoride-cochlorotrifluoroethylene) (PVDF-CTFE), due to their excellent properties such as high polarity and the possibility of controlling the porosity of the materials through binary and ternary polymer/solvent systems, among others. This review presents the recent advances on battery separators based on PVDF and its copolymers for lithium-ion batteries.
