Central nervous system (CNS) metastases can be seen at a rate of 30% in advanced stages for patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Growing evidence indicates the predictive roles of driver gene mutations in the development of brain metastases (BM) in recent years, meaning that oncogene-driven NSCLC have a high incidence of BM at diagnosis. Today, 3rd generation targeted drugs with high intracranial efficacy, which can cross the blood-brain barrier, have made a positive contribution to survival for these patients with an increased propensity to BM.

August 2024

İstanbul University - Cerrahpaşa, Cerrahpaşa Faculty of Medicine, Department of Pediatric Nephrology, İstanbul, Türkiye.

Article Synopsis
  • Two devastating earthquakes in Türkiye on February 6, 2023, resulted in significant injuries to 903 children, with a focus on crush syndrome-related acute kidney injury (Crush-AKI) and mortality.
  • The study tracked various factors, including the time under rubble, treatment protocols, and patient outcomes, revealing that Crush-AKI developed in 36% of the patients, and over half required dialysis.
  • Key findings included that serum levels of creatine phosphokinase above 20,950 U/L and inadequate initial intravenous fluid volume were linked to Crush-AKI, and most deaths occurred among those with Crush-AKI within the first four days of admission.

Chronic kidney disease (CKD), a common progressive renal failure characterized by the permanent loss of functional nephrons can rapidly progress to end-stage renal disease, which is known to be an irreversible renal failure. In the therapy of ESRD, there are controversial suggestions about the use of regular dialysis, since it is claimed to increase oxidative stress, which may increase mortality in patients. In ESRD, oxidative-stress-related DNA damage is expected to occur, along with increased inflammation.

Article Synopsis
  • This systematic review and meta-analysis investigates whether varicocele repair (VR) can lower sperm DNA fragmentation (SDF) and seminal oxidative stress (measured by malondialdehyde or MDA) in infertile men.
  • An analysis of 29 studies involving 1,491 men shows a significant reduction in SDF post-VR, regardless of the surgical technique used and the method of SDF testing.
  • The findings also indicate a notable decrease in seminal MDA levels following VR, supporting the effectiveness of varicocele repair in improving reproductive parameters in affected men.

Article Synopsis
  • C3 glomerulopathy (C3G) is a kidney disease influenced by genetic factors, and this study explores the differences in clinical outcomes among pediatric patients with and without mutations in complement-related genes.
  • Among 60 patients studied, 17 had genetic mutations with the CFH gene being the most common; those with mutations typically showed asymptomatic urinary issues and were diagnosed at an older age.
  • Despite differences in presentation, both groups had similar long-term kidney survival and response to mycophenolate mofetil treatment, indicating that genetic mutations may not significantly impact treatment outcomes.
