Introduction: Portopulmonary hypertension (PPH) is an uncommon but serious complication of chronic liver disease. It is accepted to be a poor prognostic factor in the follow-up of patients who have undergone orthotopic liver transplantation (OLT). The presence of severe PPH is accepted as a contraindication to OLT.

Pulmonary hypertension in patients with end-stage renal disease undergoing renal transplantation.

Transplant Proc

September 2009

Department of Pulmonary Disease, Baskent University Faculty of Medicine, Baskent University Hospital, Ankara, Turkey.

Introduction: Pulmonary hypertension (PHT) has been reported to occur in a considerable proportion of patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD). It is a progressive condition of the pulmonary circulation that poses prognostic importance. In this study, we sought to investigate the prevalence and the predictors of PHT among ESRD patients undergoing renal transplantation.

Objective: Little is known about the association between metabolic syndrome (MetSyn), health-related quality of life (HRQoL), and depressive symptoms in hemodialysis (HD) patients. We hypothesized that MetSyn may be associated with lower HRQoL and depression in HD patients.

Design: This was a cross-sectional study.

Echocardiographic evaluation of anomalous pulmonary venous connection (APVC) may be difficult especially in patients with complex congenital heart diseases. Angiography may also be hazardous in sick patients. For this reason, sometimes we need noninvasive and highly demonstrative procedures for the diagnosis and management of APVC.

Quality of life in hemodialysis patients: hepatitis C virus infection makes sense.

Int Urol Nephrol

December 2009

Department of Nephrology, Baskent University Hospital, 3. Cadde 50. Sokak 9/8, 06500, Bahcelievler, Ankara, Turkey.

Purpose: Hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection impairs quality of life (QOL) in patients who are not on dialysis therapy. In dialysis patients, how HCV infection affects QOL is unknown. In our study, we investigated the independent relationship between HCV infection and QOL.

Background: Women may have atypical clinical presentations and atypical risk factors of coronary artery disease. Adiponectin has anti-insulin-resistant properties and antiatherogenic effects. We investigated the association between serum adiponectin levels and coronary flow reserve (CFR) in women with normal coronary arteries.

Bezoars are the most common foreign bodies of the gastrointestinal tract. Clinical manifestations vary depending on the location of the bezoar, from no symptoms to acute abdominal syndrome. The ingestion of cling film, which is used for preserving food, may lead to a mechanical obstruction of the gut, especially at the second portion of the duodenal segment, and could manifest with abdominal pain, epigastric distress, nausea, vomiting, and fullness.

Analysis of modified oblique Keller procedure for severe hallux rigidus.

Foot Ankle Int

December 2008

Baskent University Hospital, Department of Orthopaedics and Traumatology, Fevzi Cakmak Cad., Bahçelievler, Ankara, Turkey.

Background: Several procedures have been described for treating hallux rigidus, but all have limitations. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the clinical and radiologic results of a modified oblique Keller procedure for treating hallux rigidus.

Materials And Methods: Eleven patients (13 feet) with Grade III or IV hallux rigidus were treated by modified oblique Keller procedure.

Introduction: Biphasic calcium phosphate (BCP) has proved to be an effective bone substitute, but it's effectiveness and remodeling potential in open wedge high tibial osteotomy (OWHTO) has not been analyzed yet. This study sought to evaluate the bone healing and remodeling potentials of BCP granules using a radiographic rating system in biplanar OWHTO.

Materials And Methods: Fifteen patients (15 knees) underwent biplanar OWHTO.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the link between B-type natriuretic peptide (BNP) levels and right ventricular dysfunction in patients with repaired tetralogy of Fallot (ToF) compared to healthy controls.
  • A total of 25 ToF patients and 29 healthy children were tested, revealing significantly higher BNP levels in the ToF group both at rest and after exercise.
  • The findings indicate that chronic pulmonary regurgitation (PR) in ToF patients worsens right ventricular function, as evidenced by reduced exercise capacity and strong correlations between PR severity and various exercise metrics.

Renal resistive index and nocturnal non-dipping: is there an association in essential hypertension?

Int Urol Nephrol

August 2009

Department of Nephrology, Baskent University Hospital, 3. Cadde 50, Sokak 9/8, Bahcelievler, 06500 Ankara, Turkey.

Renal Doppler ultrasonography (RDU) is a useful method to determine renal resistive index (RRI). The RRI has been used to evaluate target organ damage (TOD) in essential hypertension. Nocturnal non-dipping of blood pressure (BP) in essential hypertension was also associated with TOD.

Rheumatic fever is still one of the major public health problems in developing countries. Recurrences have been reported during continuous regular prophylaxis. Here, we describe a 13-year-old girl who had four apparent recurrences of carditis while on a regimen of intramuscular benzathine penicillin G (BPG) every three weeks.

Background: The effect of uric acid on nocturnal dipping in hypertensive patients is unknown. We analyzed the specific relationship between uric acid and nocturnal dipping status in newly diagnosed essential hypertensive patients with normal renal function.

Methods: Two hundred fifteen patients with newly diagnosed essential hypertension underwent 24-hour ambulatory blood pressure monitoring, biochemistry analysis and 24-hour urine testing.

Information about the variations of the origins of subclavian and vertebral arteries and their course is of great importance for head and neck surgery. The normal vertebral arteries arise as the first branches of the corresponding subclavian arteries. In a minority of cases, the left vertebral artery could arise directly from the aortic arch between the left common carotid and the left subclavian arteries.

Multiple primary chest wall hydatid cysts associated with spinal canal involvement.

Interact Cardiovasc Thorac Surg

September 2003

Department of Thoracic Surgery, Başkent University, School of Medicine, Başkent University Hospital, 01250 Adana, Turkey.

Primary multiple chest wall hydatid cysts associated with spinal canal involvement through an intervertebral foramen is an uncommon clinical entity. We present a 54-year-old man who underwent cystotomy and total resection of ribs five through seven via a left posterolateral thoracotomy followed by Th5-Th6 anterolateral partial pediculotomies for removal of cysts in the spinal canal. Although spinal reconstruction was not required, the chest wall defect was repaired with mersilene mesh-methyl methacrylate sandwich graft.
