A comprehensive study that compared acoustic rhinometry (AR) data to computed tomography (CT) data was performed to evaluate the accuracy of AR measurements in estimating nasal passage area and to assess its ability of quantifying paranasal sinus volume and ostium size in live humans. Twenty nasal passages of 10 healthy adults were examined by using AR and CT. Actual cross-sectional areas of the nasal cavity, sinus ostia sizes, and maxillary and frontal sinus volumes were determined from CT sections perpendicular to the curved acoustic axis of the nasal passage.

Background: Dobutamine, a predominantly beta-adrenergic sympathomimeticagent, is used for improving left ventricular (LV) systolic performance with different dosing regimens in patients with congestive heart failure (CHF). Myocardial performance index (MPI) is an indicator of LV global function that is correlated with LV end-diastolic pressure, and it is increased in CHF.
Objective: The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of a single, 24-hour, low-dose, IV dobutamine infusion on LV systolic and diastolic function and on MPI in CHF as an indicator of LV global function, as well as the adverse effects (AEs) of the infusion.

Twenty patients with end-stage renal failure who were on maintenance hemodialysis (HD) underwent pulmonary function testing (PFT) before and shortly after an HD session. On pre-HD PFT, the mean values of all parameters except residual volume (RV) were in the normal range. Mean RV was high (152.

Objectives: To identify the prognostic significance of positive bladder neck margin as the sole positive margin after radical retropubic prostatectomy for treatment of prostate cancer.
Methods: We retrospectively analyzed the data from patients who underwent radical retropubic prostatectomy at Johns Hopkins Hospital between 1984 and 2001. Of 164 patients with positive margins, 38 had a positive margin only at the bladder neck margin and 126 had a positive margin at one or more locations separate from the bladder neck margin.

A case of tortuous internal carotid artery bulging and partially obliterating the piriform sinus, causing a sensation of fullness and abnormal throat, accompanied by choking spells in a 57-year-old patient is presented. Endoscopic examination and computerized tomographic angiography were useful in establishing the diagnosis. This rare anomaly should be recognized in order to prevent possible fatal hemorrhages during further surgical interventions of the piriform sinus.

In this controlled study, we investigated the serum and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) levels of soluble intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (sICAM-1) in relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis (RRMS) patients and changes in the levels of this adhesion molecule during interferon-beta1b (IFN-beta1b) treatment. We also investigated the changes in the levels of sICAM-1 in correlation with disease activity and with findings on magnetic resonance images (MRI). The study included 24 patients (16 females and 8 males) who were confirmed to have RRMS based on the criteria of Poser et al.

Although nearly half of all schwannomas involve the head and neck region, nasal and paranasal sinus presentations are quite rare in the literature. Two of the latter cases are presented in this report. In the first, the tumor originated from the nasal septum and was completely excised under local anesthesia.

Background: Susceptibility to the development of allergic diseases is known to be associated with genetic components, as well as environmental factors. Although the genetics of immunoglobulin E, atopy, and asthma are complex, genetic markers are needed to identify populations at risk and to plan intervention studies.
Objective: Human leukocyte antigen (HLA) class II genes play a major role in the control of immune response.

Secondary septorhinoplasty often requires a large amount of tissue, and autogenous costal cartilage is one type of grafting material that can be used in these cases. In this study, 20 patients with severe nasal deformity received autogenous costal cartilage grafts. Nineteen of the 20 cases were revisions.

Langerhans' cell histiocytosis (LCH) is a condition in which granulomas form in various tissues through the accumulation of abnormal histiocytes (Langerhans' cells), granulocytes and lymphocytes. An important distinction between LCH and primary pulmonary histiocytosis (PPH) is that smoking cessation is known to often lead to spontaneous improvement in PPH patients, while this has not been demonstrated in patients with multisystem LCH. In this case report, we describe the case of a 20-year-old man who presented with cough and palpably enlarged lymph nodes in his neck.

We report a case of giant, benign renal cyst that was treated with percutaneous aspiration and sclerotherapy using 95% alcohol. A seven French catheter was inserted into the cyst under ultrasonographic and fluoroscopic guidance, and was then left in place to drain the cyst contents. Approximately 4 l of fluid was drained the first day.

Mexiletine is a class Ib drug that is widely used to treat ventricular arrhythmias. This compound is mainly known as a sodium channel blocker, but studies have demonstrated that it can also activate ATP-sensitive K+ channels and block Ca2+ channels. Recent in vitro data from experiments on liposomes indicate that mexiletine is also a potent antioxidant.

We report a case of surgically retained pericardial sponge as a cause of paracardiac mass in a woman who had thoracotomy 3 weeks prior for replacement of mitral valve prosthesis. Computed tomography examination showed a thin-walled mass containing relatively high-density material in the central part with low-density rim at the periphery suggesting a haematoma with clot formation at first. Surgically removed mass was a retained sponge between right atrium and pericardium.

Calcific myonecrosis is a rare and late sequela of compartment syndrome, which becomes symptomatic years after the initial trauma. We diagnosed this condition in a 64-year old man, 42 years after he sustained a shot-gun wound to the right lower leg. Total excision of a peripherally calcified, cystic mass, continuous with the anterior tibial muscle belly resulted in complete resolution of symptoms.
