Objective: Postoperative pulmonary complications (POPC) account for a substantial proportion of risk related to surgery and anaesthesia. The American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) classification and the Assess Respiratory Risk in Surgical Patients in Catalonia (ARISCAT) risk index correlate well with POPC. Here, we compared their accuracy in predicting pulmonary complications following upper and lower abdominal surgery.

Static renal scintigraphy with Tc-DMSA is commonly used for the evaluation of renal morphology and function. Extrarenal uptake of Tc-DMSA is a rare finding described previously on sites such as bone metastasis, hemangioma, and splenic amyloidosis. We report a case with Tc-DMSA activity in the lungs.

The role of beta2-microglobulin (β2M) in dialysis-related amyloidosis as a specific amyloid precursor was defined in the 1980s. Studies in those years were largely related to β2M amyloidosis. In 2005, for what was probably the first time in the available literature, we provided data about the association between β2M and early-onset atherosclerosis in hemodialysis patients without co-morbidities.
