Introduction: Malnutrition is defined as a pathological condition arising from deficient or imbalanced intake of nutritional elements. Factors such as increasing metabolic demands during the disease course in the hospitalized patients and inadequate calorie intake increase the risk of malnutrition. The aim of the present study is to evaluate nutritional status of patients admitted to pediatric intensive care units (PICU) in Turkey, examine the effect of nutrition on the treatment process and draw attention to the need for regulating nutritional support of patients while continuing existing therapies.

Background Postoperative acute kidney injury (AKI) is an important cause of mortality and morbidity among surgical patients. There is little information on the occurrence of AKI after operations for gynecologic malignancies. This study aimed to determine the incidence of AKI in patients who underwent surgery for gynecological malignancies and determine the risk factors in those who developed postoperative AKI.

The study aims to investigate the relationship between maternal smoking and smoke exposure with the mother's parenting attitude and psychopathological conditions in the absence of any health problems in the mother-child pairs. A descriptive form consisting of 27 questions, a "Parental Attitude Scale", and a "Depression, Anxiety, and Stress Scale" was applied by mothers with children aged 2 to 6 years. Of the 450 voluntary mothers included in the study, 107 (23.

The objective of our study was to assess the prognostic significance of the Pan-Immune-Inflammation Value (PIV) before concurrent chemoradiation (C-CRT) and prophylactic cranial irradiation (PCI) in patients with limited-stage small-cell lung cancer (SCLC). The medical records of LS-SCLC patients who underwent C-CRT and PCI between January 2010 and December 2021 were retrospectively analyzed. PIV values were calculated using the peripheral blood samples obtained within the past 7 days before the initiation of treatment: PIV = [neutrophils × platelets × monocytes] ÷ lymphocytes.

Background: Neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorders (NMOSD) are immune-mediated inflammatory disorders of the central nervous system (CNS) mostly presenting as optic neuritis and acute myelitis. NMOSD can be associated with seropositivity for aquaporin 4 antibody (AQP4 IgG), myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein antibody (MOG IgG), or can be seronegative for both. In this study, we retrospectively examined our seropositive and seronegative pediatric NMOSD patients.

  • Cefiderocol is effective against carbapenem-resistant bacteria, but its susceptibility varies based on different interpretive criteria from EUCAST and CLSI.
  • Researchers tested 254 CRK blood isolates and found significant differences in resistance rates to cefiderocol when applying EUCAST versus CLSI criteria.
  • High cefiderocol resistance rates were especially noted among NDM producers using EUCAST guidelines, leading to the recommendation that these criteria should be prioritized for testing until more clinical data is available.

Background: The ubiquitin-proteasome pathway controls the monitoring and degradation of important proteins and is involved in several cellular processes, such as development, differentiation, and transcriptional regulation. Recent evidence has shown that ubiquitin carboxy-terminal hydrolase-L1 (UCH-L1), a member of the deubiquitinating enzyme family that removes ubiquitin from protein substrates, is overexpressed in many types of cancer.

Aim: This study thus examined the expression of UCH-L1 in human astrocytoma tissues.

Umbilical cord with a single umbilical artery (SUA) can carry twice the blood volume of a three-vessel cord (TVC). So, the normal hemodynamics of the fetuses with SUA was different from those with TVC. Furthermore, structural abnormalities, fetal aneuploidy, and intrinsic growth retardation may be associated with the presence of a SUA.

  • Lazertinib, a third-generation EGFR tyrosine kinase inhibitor, was tested in a global phase III study (LASER301) against gefitinib for treating patients with advanced non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) who had specific EGFR mutations.
  • The study included 393 treatment-naïve patients and found that those taking lazertinib had a significantly longer median progression-free survival (20.6 months) compared to gefitinib (9.7 months), with similar overall response rates for both treatments.
  • Ultimately, lazertinib showed improved efficacy over gefitinib in managing advanced NSCLC, while maintaining a safety profile consistent with previous findings.

Early or late response in poor responders: does it make a difference in cycle outcome?

Hum Fertil (Camb)

December 2023

Department of Reproductive Endocrinology, Etlik Zubeyde Hanim Women's Health Hospital, University of Health Sciences, Ankara, Turkey.

Ovarian response to stimulation mainly determines the length of stimulation. However, there is no clarity in the literature regarding the optimal duration required to achieve oocyte maturity in patients with the poor ovarian response (POR) defined by Bologna criteria. Therefore, a total of 267 cycles that fulfilled the inclusion criteria were selected retrospectively.

Natriuretic peptides are widely used in all types of heart failure. Previously, we defined heart failure with non-reduced ejection fraction as patients with heart failure symptoms and/or signs and who have left ventricular ejection fraction > 40%. For the diagnosis of heart failure with preserved ejection fraction, the presence of raised natriuretic peptides is one of the major components of the diagnosis, and raised natriuretic peptides make the diagnosis more likely in patients with heart failure with mildly reduced ejection fraction.

Objectives: The study aimed to determine the levels of change of the markers related to radiographic progression, such as Dickkopf-1 (DKK-1), sclerostin (SOST), bone morphogenetic protein (BMP)-2 and -4, and interleukin (IL)-17 and -23, in ankylosing spondyloarthritis (AS) during anti-tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α) treatment.

Patients And Methods: Fifty-three anti-TNF-α naïve AS patients (34 males, 19 females; median: 38 years; range, 20 to 52 years) refractory to conventional treatments meeting the modified New York criteria or Assessment of SpondyloArthritis International Society classification criteria were enrolled to this cross-sectional, controlled study between October 2015 and January 2017. Fifty healthy volunteers (35 males, 15 females; median: 36 years; range, 18 to 55 years) with similar age and sex characteristics were recruited.
