Opioid use disorder (OUD) is a chronic disorder with a considerable amount of morbidity and mortality. Despite remarkable improvement achieved by maintenance programs, an array of treatment goals were still unmet. Mounting evidence suggests that transcranial Direct Current Stimulation (tDCS) improves decision making and cognitive functions in addictive disorders.

Association of cognitive deficits and diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN) is frequent. Working memory (WM) deficits result in impairment of daily activities, diminished functionality, and treatment compliance. Mounting evidence suggests that transcranial Direct Current Stimulation (tDCS) with concurrent working memory training (WMT) ameliorates cognitive deficits.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to investigate the occurrence and severity of postoperative intra-abdominal adhesions (POAs) in patients who underwent secondary laparoscopic surgeries, focusing on the role of inflammatory biomarkers like TNF-α and IL-1β in predicting these adhesions.
  • A total of 103 patients with prior laparoscopic surgeries were analyzed for various inflammatory markers, revealing significant differences in age, adhesion scores, and certain biomarkers linked to the presence of adhesions.
  • The findings suggest that preoperative levels of TNF-α can be used to predict the likelihood and extent of POAs, allowing for a tailored surgical approach to reduce complications in high-risk patients.

June 2022

Department of General Surgery, University of Health Sciences, Haseki Training and Research Hospital, Istanbul, Turkey.

Background: The difficulties in the hernia sac dissection in repairing large inguinal hernias with the endoscopic total extraperitoneal (TEP) technique prolong the operation and increase the risk of injury. This study investigates the effectiveness of the Zig maneuver (ligation of the hernia sac at the deep inguinal ring) in TEP in male patients with L3 inguinal hernia by European Hernia Society classification.

Materials And Methods: A total of 224 male patients with L3 inguinal hernia who underwent laparoscopic TEP surgery in 2018 and 2019 were retrospectively screened and included in the study.

Background: The European Federation of Clinical Chemistry and Laboratory Medicine (EFLM) Working Group for Preanalytical Phase (WG-PRE) have recommended an algorithm based on the reference change value (RCV) to evaluate hemolysis. We utilized this algorithm to analyze hemolysis-sensitive parameters.

Methods: Two tubes of blood were collected from each of the 10 participants, one of which was subjected to mechanical trauma while the other was centrifuged directly.

Endoscopic total extraperitoneal (TEP) is used increasingly in inguinal hernias. Perhaps the most fundamental difficulty of the classical TEP method is that the dissection plan it offers is overly limited, which is among the reasons why techniques other than TEP are preferred in large scrotal hernias. This study discusses our experience with the extended view totally extraperitoneal (e-TEP) method, which significantly expands the dissection plan compared to the classical method.

Which Is More Effective: Laparoscopic or Open Partial Cholecystectomy?

J Laparoendosc Adv Surg Tech A

May 2022

Department of General Surgery, Haseki Training and Research Hospital, University of Health Sciences, Istanbul, Turkey.

In laparoscopic cholecystectomy, partial cholecystectomy is usually preferred when the anatomic exploration is not enough to prevent bile duct injury and other complications. Some surgeons choose laparoscopically to perform partial cholecystectomy, whereas others convert to open surgery. In this study, we aim to discuss and compare the effectiveness of laparoscopic partial cholecystectomy (LPC) and open partial cholecystectomy (OPC).

The anterior iliac crest is the harvest site preferred by many surgeons because of the quantity and quality of bone obtainable and the simplicity of harvesting techniques. Avulsion fracture of the iliac crest following bone grafting is an extremely rare occurrence. We present a case report of avulsion fracture of the anterior iliac crest following bone graft harvesting for anterior cervical fusion in a 63-year-old man.
